Jim Brown and Roy Kay are almost unrecognisable!

The Buzzbomb and Willie don’t look too unlike themselves after all these years.

You can still see a bit of Roy Kay in the monster who ate him.

The first goal arrived on 13 minutes when Rab Prentice lobbed the ball inside to Kay for a low finish, and Hearts were 2-0 ahead shortly before the half-hour when Gibson deflected Kenny Aird's shot away from the German goalkeeper. Lokomotive scored through Joachim Fritsche four minutes from the interval and were reinvigorated until the closing stages of the game, when Hearts scored three goals inside 11 breathtaking minutes. Jim Brown sprinted inside from the right flank and his deceptive lob curled into the net. Within 60 seconds, Busby nodded home the fourth to put Hearts ahead on aggregate for the first time in the tie. Five minutes from time, a powerful drive across goal from Busby was converted by the head of Gibson, securing a momentous triumph for the Edinburgh side.

Cruickshank, Brown, Kay, Callachan, Gallacher, Clunie, Aird, Busby, Gibson, Park, Prentice. Subs: Shaw, Jefferies.

Willie Gibson on the far post, gets that cross and makes it Five goals to One for Heart of Midlothian

Not bad for an English ice skating commentator

Was in the North Enclosure that night with my dad. Aged 13 and my first ever European game at Tynecastle. Was right behind Bomber Brown when his cross left his foot and knewe it was a goal right away. Shed was bouncing that night. Still got hame in time to see the highlights with Alan Weekes unbridled joy commentary. One of the best Hearts performances I've seen at Tynecastle to this day and it will be 43 years ago this September. Brilliant.

I'd still take big Drew back. He could teach the younger players a thing or two.

I remember thinking at the time that we'd drawn the short straw getting him but his commentary's actually stood the test of time really well. He must have been thinking before the game "Wait, you want me to go where and cover who?"?

I wonder what Archie and Alastair Alexander were doing that night.

Obviously way above commentating on a Hearts match

In those days, all the European competitions were played on the same night. No doubt, Archie and Alastair were covering the Old Firm....

Its the cumulative effect of drinking copious amounts of Guinness over the years.  ?

I was in the Shed then made it on to the field after the game. Absolute scenes that night. One of the greatest games ever as a Hearts fan.

Then also home in time for the highlights. A night I'll never forget. My first European game.

We were so good that night that the next round home tie would be a formality when we came back from Hamburg ONLY 4-2 down. Ha Ha.

I'm pretty sure I remember getting home and watching Liverpool first before the Hearts highlights. Would have been David Colemans show.

We were a good team by Scottish standards in the 1950s, but we went out easily in the European Cup, especially against Liege.  Those were bitter losses at Tynecastle, unlike that electrifying game against Leipzig, which I missed.

I can't tell much about the Boer War as I was very young at the time!!!

Willie was a player I really liked in  my late teens and  early 20s. Capable of moments of sheer brilliance soon followed by moments of the absolutely bizarre. It’s the Hearts way I reckon. ?

Only player I knew that didn't put his arms up or run to the fans when he scored. It was as if he was embarrassed or too shy to score a goal

Hi Dave,

I was about 10 when I was first aware of Willie, but particularly remember the Leipzig game and (I think) a hat-trick against Celtic at Tynie around 76/77?

We must have had 2 Willie Gibson’s then ?

Cracking photo of the 4 scorers. Gibson was a decent player but was always behind the buzz bomb. A true legend

What I meant is he'd have them up for a second and drop them down to his side. He never ran away to celebrate with the fans like our other ace goal poacher Robbo

I was remembering that too.  I think he was known as Bongo Bongo, King of the Congo.  Must have been one of the first black players to appear at Tynecastle.

Too good for us.
