Football Before The Internet

What a load of tripe! Typical BBC!

Seriously? There was football before 1992?

I don't think so. I think you'll find Rupert Murdoch invented it that year.

What else? That supporters followed their local clubs and physically attended games, watched the reserves now and again and maybe popped along to a lower league or junior game occasionally?.

Next thing you'll be telling me that players graduated from club youth teams, lived in the local community and only earned the relative pittance that supporters who attended games could generate.

Just wanted to point out that The Pink was what you needed for match reports on a Saturday evening before the internet came along.

I just chose to use that particular picture of it :D

Back in 1956 hardly anyone had a telly including us.  I was 7.  We had a nurse staying with us called Florence (honest). She took me to the Bridges on the afternoon to a shop with TVs in the window.  She knew they would be flashing score updates on the screen.

We got there after half time and I will always remember when 3-1 flashed up on the screen.  Great celebrations amongst the 100 or so watching.

I mind my auld man checking his coupon with the classified results.  That voice; where you could more often than not predict if the away team had won/drawn/lost, from the way the home team's score was said.

Everybody at the back of the little huddle jumping up to see the scores. Also the half time scores you had to buy a programme and match the numbers to the letters on the scoreboard.

Getting Scottish football news in Canada before the Internet was almost impossible.

I relied heavily on phone calls to my dad, and the telephone in those days was absurdly expensive.

Nothing beats the tension of the vidiprinter. Hearts score appears at 0:16...

And if you wanted your say you a) went out into the street and shouted at passers-by b ) called the radio so Jimmy Sanderson could shout "Were you at the game caller?" and dismiss everyone's opinion except his own or c) wrote an actual letter to the Pink.

These days every opinionated football bore with nothing else to do can have their say 24/7, including me.

Remember on early pre-smart phones you could get 'e-lerts', texts of when your team scored. Bit embarassing when you were at the game and you were celebrating a goal (or kicking an imaginary cat because your team had lost a goal) and your phone went off.

A lot of good early internet fitba stuff was reproduced from fanzines. Which the internet then killed off.

Good times. Every week after i’d read about Hearts I’d flick to the back and see how my own team (Eskmills under 10’s) were getting on the league. Felt like a celebrity!

Ceefax was the worst. I remember watching it change page and waiting for it to change back during im sure it was the 4-1 New Year game where we scored all the goals. Was almost a repeat of that on Tuesday night trying to kee up to date with the cup game as Hearts TV went on and off ?

I remember as a laddie, if it was a home game, I was there with my brothers, lifted over the turnstile by my Dad and his mates. If it was an away game we'd all be in the queue at the Stenhouse Cross chippy waiting on the scores coming on the radio. The chippy would stop when they came on and a, collective, cheer or och would go up at the two results that mattered, then it was full steam ahead with the orders.

And watch games live on my computer, and access the HMFC website for Hearts news, and the BBC website for up-to-the-minute stats and Scottish news in general.

The thirty years I was in Canada before the internet is just a big void when it comes to my knowledge and experience with Hearts.

But I remember the 1950s perfectly!

Switching off about 68 and picking it up after 86 is not bad even 96 i mean you miss Leipzig , Munich , Atletico Madrid but back in time for Baggio rampaging almost into the box in the first minute...

Remember the old days in the shed where we were waiting for the half and full times from the stadium announcer. Occasionally there wouldn’t be any read out so we would have to wait until we got home or the pub before we knew. Mental when you think about it now
