Favourite and least favourite cities

Locky

Recommended Posts

Preferably not UK cities but if you've got stories to tell, feel free.

Been to a few in Germany and loved them. Specifically Dusseldorf, Koln and Heidelberg. The one I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would however, was Paris. Didn't expect to like it one bit but what a city.

Wouldn't say I've got a least favourite as such, but the one that underwhelmed me most was Amsterdam. Enjoyed my time there and done a lot but I was just expecting more. It didn't have a lot of charm for me and just felt like any other city really. Also shocked at how expensive and crowded it was too.

Quite simply for me:

Favourite - Barcelona (I’m a wee bit biased as I lived there!)

Least favourite - two, I’m afraid - Amsterdam (disappointed with it rather than disliking it) and Marseille.

Going back 25-30 years I lived in Vienna for a while. Amazing city and apart from the centre and one or two posh neighbourhoods it’s surprisingly working class but without any slum areas. Very vibrant as well and great value for money with the exception of the 1st district.

30 miles up the Danube is Bratislava. Total dump though it may have changed by now. Budapest also amazing, even in the Communist days.

I hear you Morgan. I'd wanted to go for years and had maybe hyped it up in my own head too much. Seems like everyone has been too and they all say how amazing it is. I did like it and would maybe go back, but I just found the place unbelievably busy and expensive. As I said, it didn't have any real charm for me like say, Paris.

We were getting the train to Dusseldorf after so the night before, we went to a newsagent across from Centraal Station to get some munchies for the mornings journey. A few cans of juice, a couple of big bags of crisps and a few chocolate bars honestly came to about 30 euro.

Forgot about Brussels too. Only spent a few hours but didn't particularly enjoy it and my girlfriend hated it. Place looked dull and a city already on edge with a huge police presence was made worse by the large trade union protests that day. Only bit that looked nice was the main square. Other than that, the place didn't look lively or interesting at all. The train station was like Waverley in the 90's and with the strikes ongoing, we waited around for our train in a station that was just rammed full of shady characters and gypsies panhandling.

Favourite either San Francisco or Cape Town.

Least Favourite - was disappointed by Sydney.  Away from the water it’s just a big, hot, busy city.  Least favourite of the Oz cities I’ve visited.

No absolute favourite, but places I have really liked and would be happy to go back to / spend more time in / live in for a while are:

Vienna, Bilbao, Berlin, Gent, Sevilla, Budapest, Amsterdam, Copenhagen (haven't been to the last two for years though, and I believe both have now become pretty expensive)

Places I haven't really liked, am not bothered about returning to, and wouldn't want to live in:

Barcelona (the least friendly Spanish city, in my experience so far), Hamburg, Rotterdam, Warsaw.

Favourite - Madrid. Incredible place with so much to see and do. Stunning architecture. It's the only city I've been to that I think I would live in other than Edinburgh.

Least favourite - Milan. Not horrible just slightly underwhelming. It's a bit industrial and not a patch on other Northern Italian cities I've been to.

Toxteth O'Grady

Like Lisbon - lots to see and do and great food and drink with friendly people

Hated Berlin - a huge sprawling load of nothing exciting, the pubs and restaurants were the most unfriendly I've experienced

Waikiki, and of course for us Las Vegas.

I actually liked Amsterdam, was disappointed in Paris and Rome, not favourites but could spend time in Aukland or Melbourne. To be honest I was not really taken in by any of the European cities, I guess I have become a person who has a primary requirement of sunshine.

Mate of mine visited Madrid last summer and loved it. Was pretty surprised by how good it was and said it was pleasantly good value for money there.

Favourites are any Japanese city, Prague & Oranjestad (Aruba).

Least favourite is Melbourne. Despite the city being a modern city that looks great, the locals are generally racist idiots. The blatant racism I heard in Australia on a daily basis was mind-blowing. Cairns being slightly less racists due to the number of non-Aussies there.

Nuremberg was a bit disappointing as well. Too quiet for my liking.

Paris was diabolically rubbish. I don't know anyone who's gone and liked it. No highlights from my visit at all.

Glasgow is still my favourite city outside Japan. Been all over the world but I love living and working in my home town. It's easy to travel around, loads of good music venues, good pubs in town as well as west end & south side + great restaurants and it's all very affordable. As long as you get away somewhere sunny during the year, where else would you rather be?

We were first there in 2003, back a few times since with the most recent the summer of 2016 when England were playing there.

It was dodgy as hell that day (mind you, it was going to be!) but we were at a Christening meal with friends so we just had to turn a blind eye.

Just something about it wasn’t our cup of tea though.

Correct about the ‘no charm’, Locky.  That is a pretty good summary btw.

Favourites : Vilnius and Ghent.

In different ways both are beautiful old cities with a youthful, relaxed vibe. I also love the contrast in Vilnius between the medieval Old Town, the remaining communist blocks and the ultra modern developments springing up all over the place.

Least favourite : Los Angeles.

The only place I've ever been that I've truly hated. The hills to the north and a few small pockets of the city are lovely but by and large its just a huge, dirty mess of a place with very little of interest to the visitor. My lasting memory of LA is a homeless dude waking along Hollywood Boulevard with his tadger out taking a leak as he walked.

Paris on the other hand...  :wow:

Paris was more for the bird. She'd always wanted to go and I had never been bothered. I was pretty reluctant when even French people told me Parisians were rude and it wasn't a nice place.

Perfect example of going to places with an open mind, cos I ****ing loved it there. Weather was magic, and even with armed police everywhere and everyone on edge, the city was just magnifique. I could walk around sun kist Paris all day and never get bored.

I've stayed in Paris twice and did like it; having said that, you've got to be careful where you go to drink and eat otherwise you could end-up getting getting badly stung when the bill comes... As with everywhere else, a wee bit of research beforehand can help you find what you're after.

One major lesson I've learned with anywhere in France though is to forget about ordering a beer - it's both shite and expensive - and stick to the vin du pays instead!

(Can't agree with you about Glasgow either: sorry... It's OK, and definitely has good points but doesn't do it for me overall. The weather's horrible as well. Much prefer Edinburgh / the east coast of Scotland, or some other UK cities, such as Newcastle & Durham. Good on you for sticking-up for your home city though!)

Oh, and syndney I could really not abide at all.

though I was there with a baby, and it REALLY does not cater to kids.

And I don't like Australians, which does not help.

The country is plastic with no history, and it really shows

I thought Oranjestad was a bit run down. Much preffered Willemstad on Curacao.

Fav - Berlin or Barcelona

Least Fav - Paris... city of romance my bum. The place absolutely reeks of pee, there's homeless people everywhere, sadly, and rats just kicking about like they own the place. Food is terrible as well.... although the transport isn't too bad.

Favourite was Prague. I used to go a lot on business in the second half of the '90s. I was last there about 7 years ago and it had lost a lot of the charm it had when I first went; it's become brasher and more commercialised but is still a beautiful place by and large.

I'd give Cape Town a bit of a commendation. I only had a short stay and in unseasonably good weather for the middle of their winter. I'd like to go back and check whether it's what it seemed for my short stay.

Many to choose from for the worst. Lagos is awful; Accra not much better. Shanghai is horrible. Probably Shanghai to take the biscuit.

And I don't get New York. Just a big city and I already live in one which is much, much better.

I love Amsterdam, miss it loads, but then I'm a smoker. I also loved Haarlem, Alkmaar, Tilburg, Eindhoven and Utrecht in Holland, Rome's epic, I like Koln a lot, Aalborg in Denmark too.

New York I didn't like, needs to calm down a bit, London too.

That's what I should have put at the top of my list. I've only been 4 times but separated by 8-10 years each time and it doesn't change. Prague has changed a lot and I fear if I went back now, I'd really not enjoy it as much as I did when it was "new".
