I can understand your difficulty in making a choice, if I had a vote I would share that problem. I cannot believe based on my beliefs of the dark ages of my youth, but at this time my choice would be Buttisgeig. He is young, is a veteran, presents himself well, has experience although in the minor leagues of municipal politics.  He seems to have a good ability to raise funds. Some of his advantages are his youthful appearance, his military service, the obvious to some thing that Trump douldn't help but attack and scoff at, and which he could respond to in kind and be just as cruel. I couldn't vote for Bernie if he gave me a million dollars, I like Biden but there is some whether true or not baggage, and Elizabeth Warren is  pretty good at campaigning but I doubt could get into a jaickets off fight with Trump.

I agree with you about Buttigieg and that's who I'd be supporting if I was a voter down there.  He's a military veteran as you say, and a highly educated man, and he comes across as sincere. But I doubt very much if the American public is ready to elect an openly gay man.

If he is not elected in either the primary or the general it will have next to nothing to do with his being gay and nearly everything to do with him essentially being a Republican in Dems' clothing--economically and policy-wise--and one of the least racially progressive people Democrats I've ever taken a serious look at, easily rivalling Joe Biden.

Wow, I didn't know all that.

Buttigieg probably won't win the nomination because he hasn't won over minority voters (understandable given that his track record dealing with minorities in South Bend wasn't good), so he'll get crushed in primaries in more diverse states than Iowa.

What's just as worrying is the middle ground (or even Warren, for that matter) won't win some of the Bernie support over. The Bernie or Bust thing is back.

For what it's worth, I am as yet undecided about my top pick for the Dem nominee, but I can't imagine a realistic scenario where I wouldn't vote for whoever is going against Trump.

I was talking to an American friend yesterday. She calls herself a Democrat but comes from a Republican family in South Carolina.  When I asked her about Bernie, she said "He's a socialist. Americans hate socialists."

She despises Trump, but says that none of the Democratic candidates appeals to her.

I don't have a preferred candidate either, probably because I haven't been keeping up sufficiently with their manifestos. However, I just hope that whoever wins the nomination has a broad enough support to defeat Trump, including winning over moderate Republicans. That's why I think a Bernie win wouldn't be so great.

I just heard a poll result mentioned on CNN, I think it was actually from yesterday but Trump had a 49%approval rating for, and 50% against with 1% not decided. This apparently was his best yet approval rating. The good thing is tht these polls will fluctuate for months, and Trump can always be depended on for at lest one major faux pas.

Yes, his best numbers yet. Pretty depressing. The problem is that any Trump faux pas doesn’t matter to the vast majority of his support. The election will come down to turnout more than persuading people to change their minds.

In the last few weeks Trump's approval rating has crept up a little, but continues to be well below 50%.

If he gets even near 49% he will win hands down, electoral college is rigged in his favour with these red states returning above populations.

Did NOT see this coming...

Mitt Romney will vote to convict Trump on one of the two articles of impeachment.

Won't make a difference to the final outcome, but I have to say that's a brave and principled stand.

It will also help counter the 'partisan impeachment' narrative although that won't matter to the Trumpsheep.

If the Democrats can start fighting back properly they can take Donald.

Bill Maher gave them some ideas on Real Time last week.

This is a very good point (and fivethirtyeight is an excellent resource). The 49% may just be an outlier and the combination of multiple recent polls gives a much lower number.

I constantly on CNN and MSNBC hear that 49% mentioned. Are they using it as a sort of scare factor or is it one poll they use to the avoidance of all others. Yesterday I heard it mentioned that the pollster was Gallup which is quite well known.

Well they've wasted over three years already doing nothing but fighting him. Maybe if they looked at why he won and stopped looking for reasons they lost. If that makes sense.

Bipartisan politics has to make a comeback. It wont with him and it wont with the Democrats running right now. It may be 2024 before we can start afresh.

It must be very annoying for people who support the Dems in the USA.  Trump won by the narrowest of margins in 2016, but might win comfortably in November, despite all his gaffs and lies.  With a mere nine months to go before the election, the Democrats aren't getting out a party message that will appeal to the voters and are still squabbling among themselves.

In the meantime, the Republicans are solidly behind Trump and their message is "the economy is great, unemployment is at an all-time low, we're creating millions of new jobs, and the future looks wonderful."

A moderate is needed to beat him but I think Sanders will be the candidate. All these rubes that get their news from Fox and Limbaugh will never vote for him. Scary times given Trump is an insane crook.

Just watc hed Nancy Pelosi give a post State of The Union  press conference. She had some good points, but as an old person myself I claim some right to be critical. She works hard on her appearance, but she is definitely an elderly lady, I cannot see that encouraging young voters. The points she made were in some cases valid and reasonable, but her elocution is betrayed by her inability to really present herself well. One of the things about gaining elderly status is to appreciate your limitations, to realise you are not totally what you were, and in some cases such as mine you receive some patience from your audience in respect to your age stimulated views. But as in all things in life you have to know your limitations and I am not sure Nancy is accepting hers.,

It was a quality poll, but it was definitively played up as it has news value.

USA has a pretty daft system on running its political opposition leader contest in the general election, months of party infighting prior to getting together and fighting the sitting President, be far more logical doing all this year after the election. Would also give party 1 voice to get behind sooner.

Calling someone a rube or a smelly Walmart shopper is definitely the way to bring millions over to your side. As for Sanders? Candidate maybe. President? Not in this country.

Item on the news tonight suggests that the Donald and Boris may  have had a wee tiff, over the phone, over the Huawei thing.

Reports that Trump was very angry with Johnson.
Maybe the love affair is over, which could be a problem for “oven ready” Boris, if it affects the fantastic deal that we were all told was in the pipeline post Brexit. Or maybe Johnson is starting to realise that he can’t let Trump run this country too.
Look out for Farage backing his American chum over his British one.

Trump inherited all the economic and employment trends from Obama, although he has reversed Obama's reduction in the deficit from the 08 crash. Trump has doubled it during an economic boom, gross incompetence and stupidity can be the only explanation. I hope they go bust like the Casinos and businesses Trump ran into the ground.

So Lt Colonel Sinman United States Army, a veteran of the assignment in Iraq, awarded a Purple Heart who did what a good soldier does, his duty as he swore to do. He reacted as he should to what he understood was an inapproriate phone call by the President to another head of state. He did as instructed reported his concerns to his departments legal authorities.

As a result of doing his duty as he seen correct,  today he was escorted by security from the White House grounds by security. The fully uniformed soldier with a chestful of medals, and qualification badges was removed from his place of duty with no respect for his rank or service. Of c ourse President Trump in an earlier interview failed to accept responsibility for this disgraceful conduct to a man who unlike the President served in fact his adopted Country with courage and loyalty to his uniform.

It was obvious that the vindictive man-child who is President was going to fire Vindman as soon as it was safe for him to do so. Now that the impeachment trial is over, the colonel was walked out the door by security like he was a common criminal.

Trump doesn't want people around who will tell the truth; all he wants is complete subservience from those around him, people who will hide the truth if necessary.

But Sinman was, easy  I know, smarter than Trump because he knew how this was going to be so he has been gradually moving his personal items from his office so that he would not have been seen today carrying them out of his office.

So the Donald who has quietly slipped off the JKB map uses that time to involve himself again. Federal Prosecutors recommended a seven to nine year Jail term for Trump friend Roger Stone, Trump on hearing this Tweeted how terrible it was and unfair. That afternoon the DOJ advised that the sentence was too severe and had to be reduced., which motivated four involved Prosecutors to resign. There are those in both camps who say this is probably correct, but it is unknown for a President to impose himslf into DOJ matters. Others say this is typical Trump, get over the Impeachment and get immediately into something controversial and probably improper. Bill Barr gaining a reputation as Trumps personal attorney, meanwhile Trumps other personal attorney Giuliani is being recognised by Barr who is using Rudy's investigation to start an investigation on the Bidens. I guess they are not watching the Democrats results.

Late in the election campaign of 2016, the FBI announced an inquiry into Hilary Clinton. Her popularity slumped and she lost the election by the narrowest of margins.

Now Barr and Giuliani, both stalwart Trump men, are huddling over the supposed dodgy dealings by the Biden family in Ukraine. Will an announcement by Barr of an inquiry be far away?  It worked for Trump in 2016, maybe it will work for him again in 2020.

The Rule Of Law has been a joke in the USA for many years due to the political appointments of justices.

That Donny is interfering in order to help a friend should come as no surprise.

The USA is in a hell of a state and to be honest there should be a constitutional convention to update the constitution to 21st century standards.

True.  They started all this when Biden looked like he was the front-runner for the Dems.

Now that Biden seems to be falling back in the race, they might turn their attention to someone else.  But who?  Bernie is probably unelectable ... too old and too 'socialist' ... and Buttigieg is openly gay, which is offensive to many millions in the USA. Klobuchar and Warren haven't made much of an impact, which leaves billionaire Bloomberg.  Hmm.

Maybe Trump will just sit back and watch the Democrats self-destruct.

What fascists do.

This case was about whether states have the power, under the US constitution, to prosecute these cases, or whether it were, to borrow the analogous British concept--it was a matter reserved for the federal government.

But undermining trust in the competency of government institutions that are meant to be apolitical? Absolutely what fascists do. You are currently seeing it in Britain too with the Tories calling for a review of the judiciary.

****ing hate these scum.
