La Luz - It's Alive

Only discovered the band about 8 months ago and listen to this album almost every day, sometimes more often. Now one of my favourite bands and probably my favourite album (taken over from Some Friendly by The Charlatans).

Craig Gordons Gloves

Jesus, this is a tough one.  For me it has to be The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chantages choir.  Excellent album made even better with the full orchestra.

Some great shouts on here, got my 3 year old massively into London Calling which he asks me to put on every night before his bath, parralel lines, physical graffiti, quadrophenia all great shouts...

Thought about a Mary Chain album or the debut from XX..

However I am going to go left field and say Black Keys Rubber Factory, its absolutely stunning and ever since my brother in law loaned me it, I have hardly ever gone more than a week without listening to it.

It's nigh on perfect

Captain America

Brian Fallon's 2nd album Sleepwalkers.

I listen to it most days and loved his acoustic set in the Usher hall last week.

My 11 year old son standing on stage and singing in front of teachers, pupils and parents, with only a mic and a piano...I couldn’t do it.

Damned Damned Damned by The Damned.

Game changer album that I was a few years too young to know about in the day.    The original and best in the UK genre.    Unrefined,  crude,  raw.     Aural violence.     Got into them on the 3rd album (Machine Gun Etiquette 1979) and later at school in the 80s.    Later to discover upon buying the early albums that Brian James was a genius,   albeit flawed with his poor follow up,   Music For Pleasure.

My musical tastes are not very wide and varied.    You can blame The Damned for that because music like that rather blooters a lot of other music into obsolescence.

Wish you were here. Pink Floyd.

 Great shout.

Nearly put Animals on as my number 1.

Very close between that and Led Zep.

Possibly the wrong thread, but why do some people think Never Mind The Bollocks is good?

Malcolm McLaren did an amazing job of promoting The Pistols as the be-all-and-end-all of 70s UK punk.    The idea still exists today.     To be fair,   Anarchy in the UK,  Pretty Vacant and GSTQ are decent songs.

But the whole thing was not anarchy, it was just marketing.  Completely the opposite of what it was supposed to represent.

"Richard Branson spent the night deciding the track list and which versions to use, and included all the hits on the record, despite the objections of the band, McLaren's management company Glitterbest and most of Virgin"

Plus, it sounds like arse.

McLaren briefly managed The Clash and The Damned along with The Pistols.    There was a big bust up during a joint tour.     But yes,    The Pistols especially were manufactured.    The Clash went off in their direction and The Damned were the genuine anarchic,   chaotic hellraisers.    Probably lucky to be alive.

But The Clash and The Damned made great music, whereas (IMO) the Sex Pistols did not.  I get the whole Sex Pistols "thing" I just struggle to understand why anyone would think the music is any good.

Because of a naive,  poor appreciation of the era,   aided grealy by McLaren's PR.      Of the London 'big 3',    they were by far the worst players.     Punk = Pistols to lots of people.

True.   But banal commercialism is also practiced by hugely talented,   legendary musicians.     Hang your head in shame Captain S.

Guns ‘n’ roses

appetite for destruction

Utter perfection- from the artwork to the music.

in the age of cassette tapes and rewinding using a pencil to save batteries every song was terrific

Tom Waits Raindogs. It has so much going on and so many sides of his writing, mad stories, beautiful ballads, and noisy madness. Lucky enough to see the tour at The Playhouse and it is still in my top 3 gigs of all time.

Was thinking of mentioning Mule Variations -- honestly didn't think anyone else would mention Waits. He's an acquired taste but holy lord can he hit you deep with one song and then smack you upside the head with the next.

I've never seen him live and he's getting up in years, but I watch his tour announcements like a hawk.

Love the shoutouts for London Calling and Shostakovich as well.

Right now what's coming to mind is the Pogues' If I Should Fall From Grace With God.  Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash gets a lot of pub but I don't think it's half the album that IISFFGWG is - way too much meddling by Costello.

Loved their first album in my early years of high school but this one was just the best. "Watch out!" Was the soundtrack to my mid teens.

Plus, today they have just released their first new track in 10 years. It is a great day ?

Sorry, too much meandering.

The pick was If I Should Fall From Grace With God.

Shane's beautiful antics and screams draw the attention, but what comes through in videos and when you see them in concert (best concert of my life) is how unbelievably tightly they all hang together at high speed, staying precisely in time while still playing with what seems like reckless abandon.

N Lincs Jambo

I would probably come up with 52 different answers depending on which week I got asked. At the moment it would be K by Kula Shaker. Hopefully this thread’s still on page 1 next month ?

Some great suggestions so far - I love Queen, Big Country and Blondie. I discovered The River by Bruce Springsteen when I was 12 and it blew me away. However THE album of choice would have to be Born To Run. Under 40 minutes but no fillers

Beat me to it.

It really is, I missed seeing them in the 90's and thought I missed the boat. When they returned and did the Psychcandy tour it was incredible.

As others have said though, it depends on my mood, this week it might be Murder Ballads, next week Let England Shake, OK Computer....

Almost bought tickets but reluctantly decided against the best part of £200, despite them being my favourite band. Will probably regret it come tomorrow.

You?

Yes, I'm going along. Got some tickets on Ticketmaster for £50.00. Be quite far back (level 2) but really wanted to see the band live, what's left of it. Sad that Becker won't be there but be interesting to see how Fagen sounds. Steve Winwood is on for an hour and a half. and Steely Dan the same. Would have preferred 2 hours of the latter but there it is.

If they play Peg and Only a Fool, i will be happy enough.

Saw them in Bristol and couple of times. Psychocandy and Damage and Joy tours.

OK Computer is a brilliant album. Think I will stick it on when I get home from work tonight.

Epic.

A demonstration of their ability to take a mixture of art rock, new wave and soft rock songs from their collection and turn them into stadium anthems.

My brother and I saw them at the SECC back in 1993ish.

Not only did the driver of the coach get lost (I'm sure he thought he was going to. Hampden), my shit head brother fainted TWICE. I also burst all my stitches from a recent op. The white tee shirt I had on under the one bought at the gig became a rather sticky crimson.

Other than that it was a decent show.
