Dalkeith

I'm thinking of moving back to Scotland this year and settling somewhere in Midlothian.  A place that's always taken my fancy is Dalkeith.

I've checked a few websites and house prices seem to be very favourable.

My question is can any of you tell me a bit about the place.  Is it a bit run down or is it thriving?  Does it have a friendly and welcoming reputation?  Is there much entertainment - cinemas etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated.  Websites are great but they lack the personal touch.

Midlothian as you are probably aware is old mining towns.

Ive lived in Easthouses, Mayfield and Newtongrange (all surrounding area of dalkeith)

Transport links are good. Plenty supermarkets. So day to day living is decent. I've grew up in and like the area. Its great for say raising a family. Generally its pretty friendly.

As for the town (s) themselves its a bit tired. pubs and shops are no-frills. Theres a few swimming pools/gyms in the area but nearest cinema is a short drive away at fort kinnaird shopping centre.

Eskbank is the posher part of dalkeith if you have deep pockets also Bonnyrigg is the in place at the minute (terms of housing) its seems to be considered a bit more up market due to all the new builds but under the surface its much the same as other nearby areas.

Hope that helps. They'll be loads on here from the area i'd imagine.

NZ Witness Protection Scheme: no-one would ever think of looking for him in Dalkeith...

Doug, is it not Dalkeith in Perth WA that you are meaning?

Seriously, if you had asked the question 10 years ago most folk would have told you not to be silly to think about moving to Dalkeith, today there a lot of new estates that are fine although maybe lacking facilities but it is close enough to them and easilly accessable with brilliant transport links with being close to the city bypass and the new rail line being opened.

Meh, it's a standard small Scottish town.

Town centre is full of bookies and charity shops, few slack jawed yokels wandering around and some nice new houses on the outskirts. There are probably worse places to live than Dalkeith and worse places to bring up your kids, but I wouldn't say there's anything that sets it apart from anywhere else in Scotland.

Did the same move a few years ago but still have a house in Sydney. Not a bad time for you to move Doug, NZ dollar riding high and property in Midlothian still affordable. Best of luck...!

Wish I hadn't opened this thread now. Bonnyrigg being touted as more upmarket ?

Every man and their dug seems to want a new build up there at the mo!

It's not my preference but if you are not from the area it does seem the 'in' place just now (mainly due to the new builds) don't think that's unfair comment.

I quietly pointed out not to be sucked in by that, least that was my meaning.

It has its "areas". Nothing wrong with the place.

The Eskbank and Newbattle areas of Dalkeith are nice. Some impressive houses both old and new.

Avoid Woodburn though....

Thanks for all that.  The move may never happen but if it does take place, much of Edinburgh will be a bit pricey for me.

Dalkeith has it all over NZ in terms of proximity to Tynecastle.  What could be more important?

So does Lochend, doesn't mean you should move there though lol

Anyways, Dalkeith...... the country park is nice and they've spent a lot of money on the 'Restoration Yard' there, nice place to visit.

They're building all over because they finally got the go ahead to build on land that would never be built on. Loanheids just a bawhair away from being joined onto Edinburgh now. Loads of new houses there too. It's still a craphole as well. These places need more than new houses that are barely even attached to them to make them look attractive. The town centres are a huge giveaway to anyone that doesn't know them.

Folk are only moving to these places as they're an affordable compromise that's in close reach of Edinburgh.

Alan R and Phil Dunphy are spot on in their assessments. Dalkeith is just an average Scottish town. Public transport and close proximity to Edinburgh and the airport also a boost. The pubs are shit, but some decent restaurants (if you ignore the cavaliere).

Lived there for about a year. Not for me in the end. Very affordable housing, and there's parts that aren't that bad at all, but the town is over run with chavs and wee wannabe gangsters. Another big thing for me was I moved out there for my girlfriend who's from there, but my work, social life and football were all in Edinburgh and the travelling wore me down.

I'm in Musselburgh now. Much prefer it to Dalkeith. Little bit more expensive I think but generally better IMO. More amenities and better pubs, restaurants etc. And even better for transport and commuting to Edinburgh. Still rather live in the town though.

Have a look at West Lothian Doug similar pricing to Mid but better roads    eg M8, M9 and more railway lines and stations. Linlithgow probably only properly hot spot (ie dear) lots of new builds in East Calder and Winchburgh village both around 11 miles from tynecastle park.

The Cavaliere has been established for years and is still successful. Its outlasted plenty of competition so can’t be that bad.

depends what you expect from pubs but as someone who is in most of them regulary I’d say they are not that bad

I taught at Dalkeith High.......

If most of the pupils I had the honour of meeting achieved predominantly burger flipping jobs post school that would be a massive achievement for them.

New McDonald’s at Hardengreen might help that.

Try Queensferry. Great wee town with a supermarket, pubs, bars and restaurants. 15 mins on train into Edinburgh. Brilliant walks etc. 25 min drive into Edinburgh.

I’d second Queensferry and Kirkliston, but if Dalkeith area is preference I think Nitten would be good shout with Train Station now, and new housing Lived there as a teenager and hated it, if only it had a train then!!

Fair enough. The Cavaliere is shit, though. Couldn't even cook a calzone properly, last time I was in (after the Celtic semi). The pubs are OK, but none stand out, the Black Bull is probably the best, IMO, but all just offer a variety of cooking lager & best (and a great pint off 80 in the Bull).

I guess much would depend on how you plan to engage with the local area? If it's just the house, it probably doesn't matter where it is.

A guy I work with from Corstorphine moved somewhere near Straiton/Loanhead 18 months ago to a big new build house. Apparently him and his wife have never stepped foot on a high street, used a local pub/takeaway/shop in all that time.

They still both work and do all their socialising in Edinburgh.

I think this is common. I’ve lived in Bonnyrigg most of my life and hardly use the town centre apart from the odd bit of shopping and ordering a takeaway. Mostly socialise locally in Lasswade ( a short bus/walk away ) at the Papermill, Laird and Dog and, now, Luci’s. Apart from Beetroot the pubs in Bonnyrigg are your typicsl drinking shops for ‘locals’.

Edingburgh city centre is a short drive, bus or train ride away ( 5 mins to drive to the station ). Like most of the Midlothian towns Bonnyrigg has grown significantly in the last twenty years to be, effectively, outer Edinburgh. That growth doesn’t look like stopping any time soon.

Can't argue with that. Been out here for almost seven years, love it. Not many places where you can take in breathtaking views within a five minute walk. Plenty of boozers, restaurants, cafes etc too.

Lot of nice houses being built on Kirkliston, but not much happening on the high street. Schools not quite come to terms with increased population either, if that's a factor.

South Queensferry is a good shout.

I live in West Edinburgh but over the year will venture into SQ (more so the summer) a few times for something to eat and drink.

My cousin moved to a house in Echline a few years back and loves it. She also got married at Orocco Pier which I thought was a cracking venue with great views out the back.

The wee town area just has a nice feel to it. Reminds me of Corstorphine.
