Der Kaiser
Walk at Flotterstone then hot chocolate at the wee cafe in the old ranger station. Bliss.
davemclaren
Vogrie used to be a nice place to take the kids for a walk. Not been for years though.
iantjambo
Dalkeith Country Park?
¼½¾
Maybe not at ths time of year, but the bird of prey centre in the grounds of Dalhousie castle usually has owls and things sitting outside if the weather's ok. Doesn't cost anything to look.
All roads lead to Gorgie
If it is trips from Midlothian then the John Muir Country park at Dunbar has nice walks by the beach and woods and has play areas for kids. There is also a farm close by like the Gorgie city farm. Wrap up warm though it can be very cold by the sea.

Dawnrazor
There's a lovley walk up and down stream on the the Esk, if you park at the bottom of the Glen between Rosewell and Roslynn, there's big gates where you can park, walk up stream to the old powder works, there's a big wier and pick nick tables, or go down stream the where the old pay'n'take was, you can go over the bridge and up to Roslynn Castle. Carl Fredrickson
Maybe obvious but my kids love the likes of East Links, Five Sisters Zoo, Almondvalley Heritage Centre and Conifx at Kirkliston. They also enjoy going down to Musselburgh - playing in the wee park with sand at the beach then walking round the sea front to the other park.
