Terrible store. No wonder people stream and or download from other sites. I went in today for a CD lens cleaner and got sent on a wild goose chase only to be told they don't sell them. :seething:

Is that not the vinyl snobs who insist it is superior to any digital format?

I was once sat next to a guy at a gig in the Queens Hall who insisted he could hear the binary 1s and 0s of cds.  I got up and left him to his own delusions.

I had an idiot salesman trying to sell me headphones when I bought a new iPod as they had gold plated connectors and you need that to hear digital sound properly. I’m not sure he understood the explanation of D-A converters and the human ears inability to hear digital sound as he spoke back to me like I was a slow child. I then mentioned that I was a sound engineer and he mumbled something about recorded sound being different to live and shuffled of.

I do do like vinyl though.

Well unless you’re a machine you won’t hear digital. :smuggy:

I presume you mean CD and download. There is a difference unless you stream at the highest possible quality.

Thank feck I'm not the only 1.

I quite happily stream from Apple music, all my CDs are away in the loft and probably won't see the light of day again.

The best thing about streaming is, the wide choice of music I can play in my car without having scratched discs and cases lying all over the car.

I probably sound like a Luddite but this streaming stuff is kinda new to me. I got Amazon music when we got an Amazon Echo but not unlimited. I generally use that these days rather than stick a CD on. Most of the stuff I listen to is old anyway. How does it work in the motor yer Deezers and Spotify. Same wi when I'm running, generally have me ipod on shuffle. How can I stream when I'm running?

You can download to your phone and then play to your hearts content without using mobile data. I'm constantly adding and removing playlists on my phone for when I'm driving. Currently playing a Jimi Hendrix playlist when in the car. Only problem is when foxy lady comes on and I start acting like Garth from Wayne's world.

Who can be arsed with vinyl !?

Overpriced and inconvenient.

I sold a piece of vinyl today and the guy who bought it said it was for the artwork rather than the music. I think it is the look and feel of vinyl that people go for but selling at twice the price of the same music on CD is way too much to pay if it is just the music you are after.

I was being mischievous ?

And a bit jealous as I it have the tinetor space to sit down and enjoy albums in full like I used to.

I do miss the artwork of vinyl - even the old singles were beautifully crafted - but the price is ridiculous.

I gave so many records away to the charity shops in the 90s, sometimes it was because my tastes changed but more often it was for the CD versions I could play in the car or on a portable CD player.

You don't quite get so attached to CD, I believe that now.

Have to say I have always loved wandering round record shops, be it big un's like HMV or Fopp or little uns. I was in a Sunrise records, in Vancouver on my hols and one of the staff turned me on to The Tragically Hip, who I'd never heard.

I started off with albums, changed to casette's when the personal hi-fi came out, resisted CD's for ages and I'm still quite resistant to downloads/streaming yet but I know that's how the world is going now.

Having said that I got Quadrophenia on Vinyl again last year and it is just a thing of beauty.

Spotify now.Never bought a CD for 10 years.

The record industry ripped the pish for years with their prices.

They deserve everything that's coming to them.

They are ripping the piss now.

All these reissues on coloured vinyl at £20+, double and triple vinyl albums cost upwards of £75.

Then there is Record Store Day.  Produce very limited quantities of records at rip off prices in specialist indie stores to screw the collectors.

It is superior.

Buying and playing a record is an experience.  The sound quality is so much better compared to MP3. Nothing is lost playing a record unlike MP3.

Mostly listen to Apple Music when commuting, Spotify at work and vinyl in the house, do like having a rake around a 2nd hand record store, very rarely buy new/ re-released vinyls tbh

You can throw in the "20th Anniversary Reissues" into that Rip-Off Mix as well.

The original album with a couple of (deservedly) unreleased tracks and a dozen outtakes.

I only use MP3 on portable devices.  Lossless FLAC and hi-res are the definitive listening experience for sound quality.

I notice that there is a new format UHQCD starting to take off like SACD.

It is much better than the Gyle but take note one or two tacky stores selling cheap hibs tat. :)

HMV used to be on the ground floor but it is now on the second floor.

It's not difficult to be better than the gyle I guess. I might venture down there eventually. The place was built when I was 12 so I'm clearly in no rush!

Used to enjoy looking through HMV in the school days. Usually spent my paper money in avalanche or fop though.

The store is a lot bigger than Fopp but the prices are the same as HMV own Fopp now.

I used to love it when Fopp and Avalanche were side by side in Cockburn St. I used to listen on the headphones in Fopp and buy in Avalanche ☺️

They are owned by Hilco now though.....Hilco took over HMV Canada years ago and turned it around

Hilco offer restructuring / refinancing and try to turn the fortunes around.....HMV are moving a few stores around though to try and get out of some leases on the premises.....

Cant remember the last time I actually bought something in store though

That would be disappointing for Edinburgh but they seriously need to get that shop back into the city centre as first floor out in Ocean Terminal is an inconvenience for most people.

I used to work off Commercial Street so would go there once a week but changed jobs and its not really convenient.

From a side note, Fopp is a sister store to HMV so I assume it is affected by this news too?

I forgot about that. Fopp in Bath closed last year sadly. It wiped the floor with its rivals. Great shop and very much missed. :(

We still have Fopp in Rose Street, just off St Andrews Sq.  Its the best place in town if you want to shop for CDs or DVDs/Blu-Rays.  It sells Vinyl too, but there is competition from indie stores Coda and Assai Records who get indie exclusives.

I do see a downturn in DVD and Blu Ray film sales as I don't think people really need to own DVDs and Blu Rays when you rarely re-watch films before they reach TV.  Streaming services are so much more convenient.

Music is a different matter - streaming services have their market but collectors prefer physical media.  If HMV and Fopp don't continue I guess the Indie stores could expand and fill the gap.

As early as Jan 2017 dvd sales were overtaken by online streaming. Having never been into DVDs (I cba watching 99% of films more than once) I find it incredible some folk have hundreds of the things littering the house. Shiny coasters and a worse investment its hard to find.

Would miss it, still enjoy browsing in the Livi store each month and always wander out with a few CD's

Yes still buy them, have a fair sized collection, can't beat sticking a CD in the old stereophonic machine, not convinced with this streaming malarkey like to browse the collection and stick it on, no computers involved.

Proper Old Skool.

Not Vinyl Old Skool, hate how you can't fast forward vinyl although I have lots of vinyl also....

Vinyl would have died altogether if it wasn't for the rave scene. Week in and week out I spent a shit load going to 23rd Precinct and  Global for my 12" I had quite a collection until I was robbed :seething:
