Top ten most dominant sports people

This question is open to interpretation. Obviously everyones views of what domination means and which sports should count will vary People from different ages will have different views and obviously taste in sports will have an impact on your choices. Ill leave it to you guys to decide how you want to interpret the question.

My list is

1 - Michael Phelphs. The guy is literally a human fish. He has won titles in 8 different swimming categories and is the most successful Olympian of all times.

2 - Usain Bolt. The guys the fastest man to have lived and considering he hasn't been accused of doping and won gold in both the 100 and 200 by blitzing the competition makes him 2nd on my list.

3- Floyd Mayweather. People hate him but nobody could touch him in boxing. Literally...

4 - Phil Taylor. Greatest darts player of all time and his 16 world titles and 8 in a row show how dominate he was.

5 -

Not a basketball fan myself but surely Jordan dominated the sport for a decade?

Jahangir Khan went unbeaten in Squash between 1981 and 1986, winning 555 [five hundred and fifty-five] matches in a row.

6 World Open wins (out of 9 finals) and 10 British Open wins (out of 11 finals) to his name.

Could we maybe limit this to only 1 from a sport.. certainly make it more difficult/interesting and of course debatable :D

Anyway, in no particular order:

Michael Phelps

tiger Woods

Pele

Jonah Lomu

Ronnie O'sullivan

Martina Navratilova

Michael Van Gerwyn

Usain Bolt

Mike Tyson

Chuck Liddell

Those are ten sports I have knowledge of, no point me saying that; Matilda Worthington Smythe is best at gymkhana :D

For anyone that’s actually played squash, they will know how ludicrous a record that is.

I just decided to pick one golfer so it was Nicklaus. Woods is certainly a worthy pick.

I thought you meant transcending sense not just your own sport. Jordan isn't as worldly, if you know what I mean.

Carl Lewis dominated Long Jump, 100m and 4x 100m relay for about 16 years.

He was also pretty handy at the 200m.

If he's allowed , I'd say Lance Armstrong is the ultimate king of his sport.

Ronnie O'Sullivan?  Stephen Hendry wiped the floor with all these fine players in his prime.

Stephen Hendry is without a doubt the best snooker player there has ever been.

Surely using stimulants makes him a cheat.

I'd argue O'Sullivan is a more naturally talented player, but Hendry considerably more successful, and in a more competitive era too.

Basketball is probably the 2nd biggest sport on the planet.

All roads lead to Gorgie

I don't think he has be mentioned but Brian Lara the West Indies cricketer dominated the batting averages for ages.

Incredibly wrong answer. Even if he hadn’t been banned he wouldn’t get that title. He was the most successful Tour de France rider of all time but Merckx won everything there was to win, multiple times.

Any such list has to include Tiger Woods, especially late 90's / early 2000 Woods where he took the sport to an entirely new level, holding all 4 majors after the 2000 Open Championship at St Andrews. The concept of 'Tiger Proofing', lengthening courses to make it more difficult, shows just how good he was.

Keeping it to one person per sport, and in no particular order, I’d go for...

Michael Phelps

Tiger Woods

Sugar Ray Robinson

Wayne Gretzky

Eddie Merckx

Don Bradman

Michael Jordan

Pele

Roger Federer

Jerry Rice

I wouldn’t argue that, at the top of their game, I reckon Ronnie would lose the plot playing Stephen...the most complete all round game I’ve ever seen.

Just making a point. My cycling hero was the Great Miguel Indurain.

You could find children in The Congo, wearing fake Nike Air's on their feet.

Anyone cutting around with a pair of Navratilova Pan-Am's?

Jordan was the first billionaire sportsman, and is considered the greatest ever basketball player. (Despite LeBron James' best efforts...)Most of the name's mentioned, will fade from history, outwith the sphere of their own sport.

Your great, great grandkids, will still know who Michael Jordan was.

Most youngsters will know MJ as the cry baby meme.

Roger Federer? Can't really say he dominated when Nadal and Novak usually wipe the floor with him and will overtake his records.

My instinct is to disagree completely with this statement. What are you basing this on? Viewing figures? People playing the sport? Global appeal/participation?

Impressive, didn't realise that. Still think seven world championships in the era of Davis, White et al. trumps that though. Good 'Ferry lad too.
