Essentially a backup for the match ref..

(for example if the ref strains his neck fellating the old firm, the 4th official is ready to take over the game)

The White Cockade

Can remember one getting a Hearts man sent off Michael Stewart?

the one on Wednesday got involved with telling players where to take thrown ins which I’ve never seen before

Apart from keeping the opposition benches apart he appears to contribute very little to the game.

He checks the subs studs, makes sure Leveins not out off his coaches box, gives other coaches free reign outside their boxes, rats Levein out when he is out off his box, tells the ref on his wee mike that Levein is bad mouthing him, adds extra time on when needed by Celtic or Newco, takes off time when Celtic or Newco are winning a tight one, gets in the way when Hearts try to take a quick throw in,  celebrates with the opposition subs when Hearts concede a goal, calls in the pizza order for after the game.

The correct answer has been posted.

But they give managers somebody to moan at and discuss decisions. Hoping to take a bit of heat off the referee.

Never noticed any issues the games we didn't have them in the Championship.

If the manager starts acting up the 4th official is there to grass him up so the ref can send him to the stands.

One thing they are not meant to do, is tell the referee what decision he should make, though this has happened against us a few times.

Bit like the linesmen, they contribute nothing and when they do its wrong.

Ii's ancient history but I'm still beelin' about this bit of Neil Lennon cheatery. What many have forgotten is that the head-butt that didn't happen was missed by the ref and by the linesmen, and brought to their attention by the Fourth Official.

So - what's the Fourth Official for? Helping out the Old Firm. What else?
