Due to circumstances beyond my control, I now have a dog living in my house, and two cats.

The cats are aloof, smelly little pains in the ass.  I really don't see the point in people having a cat as a pet.

The dog is fine, a lovely wee Westie.  But even dogs have bad habits.  Disgusting bad habits.  The dog discovered a long-dead squirrel under a bush one day, and had a large part of it eaten before I realised what it was doing.  I needn't have worried about its health though.  About a half-hour later it puked up the decaying remains onto the middle of the living room carpet.  Cleaning that mess up was a fun experience.

A cat owner would call the remains a present.

I like cats too but dugs are far more loving and loyal beasts.

This is an old picture, she's about 6 there but even at 11 she still hates the Hibs. :fth:

Always been a dog person...they are great and so loyal and affectionate.

Family have always had labs, and I have a 15 month old yellow one which is 3rd generation in the family...her granny and auntie are with my mum, and my sister has the mum and a sister (rest of the pack are black though!)

Edit: won’t let me upload pics. What’s the best file sharing site to upload to?

Speaking on behalf of all dogs, we will give twice as much love if taken to the pub and will roll in cuddling you and give you the occasional emergency excuse

Never had a dug until last year, when we got this wee fellae. Another Rudi (must’ve met about ten other Jambos with dugs called Rudi?). He’s a wee cockapoo, I could’ve done with a bigger dug but the missus wasnae too keen. He’s brilliant though, amazing how quickly you build a bond with yer dug. He proper ****ing hates the Hibs as well, he’s a PHD ??

My dog farted in the living room last night.  He got up, moved, then this farty smell appeared.  I blamed the wife, but then my son could smell it over his way, then the dog trotted back, lay down as if nothing had happened.  First time he's done that...

Cheeky wee beggar!

We’ve got a wee Parson’s Jack Russell called Fred and two cats. Lots of personality, always happy to see you and he loves playing with the kids. The cats, on the other hand, don’t care about anything apart from themselves and I just leave them to the missus to deal with.

He reminds me of the dog from Jamie and  the Magic Tourch, for some reason

A lot of folk think he's an Old English sheepdog, but he's a bearded collie (with a bit of border in him too).

Anyone got any tips for a new puppy owner or experience with a Cavapoo.

Initially we had a cage for Bertie when he was a pup.  He got used to going there to sleep.  As he got bigger, the cage was got rid of.

Dog pee mats essential, best to keep one in one place so they train themselves to go there, eventually they will gravitate to door to be let out to pee.

Reckon we made a few mistakes early on by not disciplining enough (not in a beat the dog up way) rather to get reflex reactions.  But it's no hardship for us.  He's a great dog (as they all are!)

Just stick with it for the first few months as all the hard work involving house training is well worth it. Pups will chew so if you have any expensive furniture that needs protected move it to a room where the pup has no access. Shoes can be a target as well so watch them.

Lastly training classes and letting the pup meet other dogs are very important once cleared by the vet.

Love dogs as long as they are socialised and not raving biting snarling lunatics. Got a 10 year old black lab. Kids love him and hes as daft as a brush & very loving. Wouldn't be without him now.

Cats!

Dont mind them BUT...they are dicks! You pet them & they are all purring and rubbing themselves all over you then out of the blue they just attack you with their teeth & claws and scratch your hand. WTF is that all about?

Oscar posing on the bed. Only issue with him is at 32kgs you struggle to shift the bugger if he lies on top of you in the bed!!

Woke up the other night with him in between me and the wife, flat on his back, paws in the air, with his head resting on the pillows.

He likes to be comfy!

Ta. Absolutely love labs. He was sat out the back letting my young niece brush him yesterday and she's growing in confidence with dogs but his nature is brilliant for a young dog.

I know what you mean.  One of the cats that's now living in my house was sitting in my lap a couple of weeks ago, happy as Larry.  Suddenly the door opened and in walked my daughter with her big German Shepherd.  The cat freaked out, as well she should, because the dog is a killer.  I held on to the cat to save her from getting ripped apart.  By the time my daughter wrestled the dog back out the door, I was bleeding like a stuck pig.  Fourteen separate bleeding scratches on my hands, arms, and torso.

And it isn't even my effing cat!

I’m getting a new pup in a couple of months. I wasn’t too bothered but the wife and kids have been relentless over the subject for longer than I could handle, so finally gave green light.

Wasn’t too sure to be honest they can be binding in terms going out, holidays etc. However, I do have a pretty ideal environment, lot space in house, big garden, someone in house all the time and a loving environment and I ca’t lie I’m looking forward to it.

Had one is a kid and he fun loving little thing. It will be good for the kids and teach them a bit of responsibility. It won’t be my dog probably it’s for the kids/wife but will bring more positives than negatives.

They’ve gone for Cavapoo or something for a wide variety of reasons. Wouldn’t have been my choice but they are cute looking things.  Anyone got any tips for a new puppy owner or experience with a Cavapoo.

If you have a garden and with this weather it is easy enough to toilet train straight outside.

There is debate about whether toilet training pads delay toilet training to the outdoors

I have a Poodle and he was toilet trained by 16 weeks straight to the outside.

With a Cavapoo get them used to being groomed from day one, Make sure you use a comb as well as a slicker brush, otherwise matts do happen.

Also I would highly recommend puppy training classes. But make sure you get in and get them booked quickly.

Biggest tip I can give you is to buy some ear plugs for the first night or 2. It will howl the house down when it is on its own at first, but you need to stay strong and leave it, as if you go in to check on it then it will know it gets attention if it howls. I got lucky that my pup only howled for about 30 mins on the first night...just as well as we were in a flat at the time!

Get a cage for it at the start, and lock it in at night. Put blankets over the cage, and if you need to, then you can have a radio on quietly just to give it some background noise. After a few weeks, open the cage door at night (have it shut in the kitchen or something though so it can’t get too far!). It will then start to associate the cage with its own personal space, and if you just leave the door open at all times, you will find it sometimes just goes in there for some peace and quiet!

Toilet training will take time. The key thing is to really give praise and treats if it does well e.g hits the pad, or goes outside if you have the door open. Be patient!

Puppy training classes are probably wise, as I didnt bother and Harley is not great on a lead, although she is generally good off it (but not good enough to be off lead for crossing roads).  I wouldn’t go too far with the training though, as some dogs become a bit robotic with it, and part of the fun is the dogs individual characteristics, and quirks and their playful nature.

I am sure you will love having a dog again so enjoy!

We've a couple of Australian Labradoodles. One of whom is just 15 weeks old.

Great temprement, great in terms of being hypoallergenic, and great in terms of the fact they don't shed any hair.

Been a bit of a learning curve for the older dog having to learn to share toys and realise she's not the only one any more, but each day they seem to get better and better...... there have been tough moments for sure though.

I agree :D

My younger lab swims under the water like an otter.

Not bad for a dog who broke her spine in 3 places and had her hip removed.

My dad's dog i mentioned earlier didn't like fetching sticks or chasing cats. He preferred to fetch pebbles and chase birds. He would stick his head under water to retrieve a stone thrown for him

Craig Gordons Gloves

We got a dog about 10 years back, pure bred springer. Turns out that springers can have a seratonin imbalance due to overbreeding, it turns out our dog was one one of those, 90% of the time he was just a mad springer, 10% of the time he was aggressive and attacked people, including my wife, we ended up having to get him put down at 18 months old, tried to rehome him but couldn’t and with the small baby in the house he was too unpredictable. I should point out that this was the last resort after having a dog therapist work with him, having the vet work with him, he even had a bloody Prozac prescription!

that put us off dogs for a while but a couple of years back the wife saw a 10 week old puppy online at the humane society, lab/collie mix, somehow we ended up taking her home and she’s been absolutely fantastic, off her head but is absolutely brilliant with the kids, even the one with autism who sometimes doesn’t realize he’s hugging her too tight or the likes, only downside is she likes to bark to tell us there are things outside in the garden like turkeys, deer, squirrels, birds and even people walking on the street which is 100 feet away. Love her to bits though.
