Footballfirst Posted October 22 Posted October 22 (edited) This is from 1980. Note the broken windows in the top flat. The associated Facebook post suggests shortly after 1983, as the flats were progressively vacated due to subsidence. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1005014926222857&id=162922127098812&set=a.284436614947362 Edited October 22 by Footballfirst

I would say that it’s much dirtier and scruffier, much more congested and the shops back then were probably better, as in wee independent places that added to a sense of community spirit. But, that's just my thoughts.

But, that's just my thoughts. Fair enough. Cant comment on the look of the place but 40/50 years of further pollution and wear and tear will do that without any intervention. I actually think the place still has plenty of independent shops. Butchers, Fishmonger, Greengrocer (think thats still just under the bridge?) Along with a few restaurants, cafes and takeaways. Maybe not quite the same "local" feel where neighbours are on first name basis but thats the same everywhere.

I can barely remember the time that building was there but then again it just blended in with the rest of the street so didn't take much notice of it in isolation.

I remember the Securex building which was just out of the picture to the right and the market garden, which took up much of what is now the retail park, but not the white building. Something makes me think that the whole building was a chinese restaurant at one time.

The white building may have belonged to the piggery on Gylemuir Road as shown below, or alternatively the nursery at the corner of Meadow Place Road. The junction of Meadow Place Road and Glasgow Road (now featuring the Drum Brae roundabout), showing the nursery's greenhouses.

I suspect that there is some confusion with the building directly across the road from the 'mystery white building', which currently an Italian? In a previous existence as a Mediterranean bistro it was painted white with blue window surrounds.

I remember as a boy walking with my Dad as he pushed a wheelbarrow back home after buying a tree from there.

Tazio Posted October 24 Posted October 24 My main memory of Joe’s Garage was the time I was sitting waiting for a mate quietly enjoying a pint. At this point a bloke came in the bar and as he walked towards the bar a pair of bright red Y-fronts slipped out the bottom of one of his trouser legs that he’d obviously had on the night before or the last time he wore those trousers. Amazingly he casually bent over, picked them up, popped them in his jacket pocket, and ordered his pint.
