That must be a different Arthur Street as the one I know runs parallel to Leith Walk at Pilrig and looks nothing like that.

Was up around the Pleasance somewhere I think, and probably redeveloped and gone now?

First ever German attack of WW11 was over the forth I’m sure a German plane was shot down

It was. My mother (long since passed) would have been about 13 at the time living in Corstorphine. She always told the tale of going out into the back garden to see what was happening above only for her dad to scream, "get back inside, it's a bloody Gerry!".

My mother was also in her early teens. She used to stand in her back garden in West Lothian and listen to the German bombers heading over to attack Clydebank. They could tell by the engine noise when they were laden or empty on their way back.

I don’t blame them for pushing their bikes. That hill is a pain.

Remember going there as a boy my folks bought furniture and I think our very first stereo from there

Once you had selected what you were buying you went to the sales counter where a brown-coated guy would do all the paperwork

I wondered if this photo was maybe taken at an Ideal Homes Exhibition at the old Waverley Market?

The Bruce's furniture shop photo above was described as having been taken at Waverley Market. My knowledge of the Waverley Market before I came to Edinburgh in 1973 is lacking.

I remember being in there once for an ideal home exhibition type thing. Probably late 60's or very early 70's before it was pulled down. Some interesting old photos here -

I remember attending the Ideal Home exhibition in the 60s with my parents and younger sister. My main memory is off all the food samples we ate. 😀

One of my last memories of it from the early 70s are the signs for the welly boot show outside.  I think Billy Connelly might have been in that.

Ahh I may be mis-remembering - it was a very long time ago!

The place I am thinking of as Bruces was a store on Hunter Square - could it have been Ritchie's?

You’re probably correct. Waverley market back then was like an exhibition and events space, not a shopping centre. Basically a big empty room - think SSEC or Highland Hall at Ingliston. It put on all sorts of events from car shows, to circuses, dog shows etc. It definitely held Ideal Home Exhibitions where you could go and see all the latest innovations in furniture, ‘tech’ and food etc. I think the photo is where Bruce’s have set up in one of the display areas at an Ideal Home show, and they’d still have their main shop elsewhere in the city. The photo I posted is of something like a flower show but you can see some of the same sort of ironwork in the roof structure in both photos. The link I posted from the evening news shows other retailers setting up like that for exhibitions.

Shows just how big Leith Central station was

That's cracking.

12 years to build and opened in 1903.

Only lasted 50 years.

I also remember the Carnival over the festive period.

The Bruce's photo gave an address of 46 High Street although, as others have pointed out, they may have set up a temporary outlet at Waverley Market as part of an exhibition.

46 High Street is a couple of doors up from the Museum of Childhood (42)

Maybe a flower show? I remember being dragged to one by my parents who were keen gardeners, particularly my dad.

Think the shop you are thinking of might be Sterling Stevens (sp), the Klarna of it's day where you bought things on tic.

The number of times i would either jump on or off the bus while moving is quite scary when I think about it now.

What a great thread.

This year I'm returning to Edinburgh, and I enjoy learning more about its history through these posts. Hopefully, this time I can attend a Jambos match.
