Imagine replacing the building on the left with that monstrosity…

That defies belief. I cannot understand the logic of demolishing what was a probably functional, solid and architecturally pleasant building and replacing it with that mess.

Really interesting set of history programs on BBC Scotland - "Scotland from the Sky", presented by James Crawford. He's an author and historian.    Episode 3 (link below) of the current series featured Mavisbank House and Inchkeith - fascinating stuff.   Can't remember if it was this thread or a another one which had photos of Mavisbank a while back.

James has a curious way of emphasising the info he's telling you, by rapidly shaking his head from side to side !! 😄

Trying to picture where this would be, is it the Dreghorn Junction?  Didn't realise the houses were that close!

On closer inspection of the pixels, I think it is:

Looks different with the trees.

The old Empire theatre pictured above replaced the Empire Palace Theatre.  ( I couldn't find a photo of that).   In 1911 a famous magician, The Great Lafayette, along with 10 other performers and a lion he used in his act, died in a fire which badly damaged the theatre.  A few days before the fire, the magician's dog, Beauty, who'd been a gift from Harry Houdini, died. Edinburgh council agreed to let the dog be buried in Edinburgh, if  the man was also buried there at a later. Their grave is in Piershill cemetery.

Just caught The People's History Show there on STV and it finished with a feature about this very story. Had never heard anything about it before. What a fascinating little piece of Edinburgh history.
