Top gear at 6000rpm and still safe for the speed limit.

My old man had one of those when I was a nipper. I think it was his first car.

One of my uncles had one; a horrible brown it was.  How him, my mum and dad and five kids ever fitted in it I don't know.

That was some traffic system around that police box.

A view from the other side in 1973. Police box still there

Does anyone know what the buildings on the right here, Bristo Street, were like prior to demolition? Were they slums in need of knocking down or in decent condition? The old photos of the area make it look like a nice community with pubs & shops. I'm wondering if that was the case.

I left in 1966, my memory is that they were older buildings but seemed comfortably liveable.

My father worked on the right side of the picture, SMT Fountainbridge had an engine repair workshop there. Many a night I went and met him to go home for dinner, we weren't a smoochy family, but there was a lot of love and respect there. I am actually glad I cannot go back to the place of my roots, so much has changed and with the changes so much of my past life and history.

Did anyone ever take a guess, or answer where this one was?

I feel like I know it, I just can't think where...!

Looks a bit like Goldenacre either Inverleith Row or Ferry Road. Could be miles off though.

You’re close. It’s Granton Road facing north. Just opposite the road down to Wardie Primary School.

Edit for bloody autocorrect.

Yes. Found it on Google maps. The bus stop has moved a few yards along the road and the gable wall has had some work done on it.

The Cameo was/is a wee bit further back from the photo ((heading back towards Bruntsfield).

The buses are beside what was the Penthouse Bar and are opposite the jewellers that was Jack Levey.

Not exactly "history" as it's bang up to date, but it's still a great picture of the best city in the world

The new St James looks so much better than the old St James Centre. Hopefully the new one stands the test of time better than the old one.

They nearly did think there were plans in the sixties for roads through Princes Street Gardens and a large expressway through the Southside.  The M8 wrecked whole areas of Glasgow.

You're right. Some of the more horrendous proposals are in the article below - wiping out Dalry / Comely Bank & Stockbridge !

There are rare occasions when being conservative (as a city) is a good thing. 🙂

That is the street I chased two guys from Heriot Mount to there. At the open spot on the right they ran down there I followed and didn't realise it was the foundations for old buildings and were fairly high stepped, I ran off one and went down like the proverbial bag of .... , the two housebreakers came back, got me up and saw I was O.K and left. That was 1956, and it is still clear in my memory, I guess there was a sense  of antagonism between the police and the bad guys, but a limit to even that when possible serious injury happened.

Sounds like it was honour amongst police and the thieves.
