I remember i was walking my dogs up Arthur's Seat and looking over and the mushroom cloud of smoke with flames was apocalyptical and after a while grey bits of ash started falling down even at that distance and i figured it was time to head home and hide under a table with a few tins of beans.

Haha no wonder!

Did anyone die in this explosion?

Remember thinking that top board was the highest thing in the world.

Also remember the underwater glass in the main pool slightly to the right of this photo. Think it let you see into the underwater viewing area for the diving pools?

Off the top of my head no. It wasn't one huge explosion, it was a large fire then individual things started to explode.

I watched from the roof of Victoria Quay and you could see oil barrels flying into the air.

Not a good sight my family lived 3 streets away.

I bottled the top board. Had to go up though and look over the edge. No thanks !

Best I did was the first platform one (3rd) and I only tried that once.

I was the same, couldn't manage the top 2 platforms. I thought it was embarrassing climbing back down then realised it was quite a common sight.

On another note, I loved the flumes there, should have kept them.

Stockbridge, just to the left of the library ?

It was fire station originally.

Each arch was for one  tender which in those days was horse drawn.

Think it’s Weir Court. They put a facade of a pub up on the side of the library. Few guys I know got used as extras.

I see it's Sighthill Wynd - just trying to get my bearings. Is that van facing North towards Corstorphine ?

Yeah it’s Soghthill Wynd  the three big tower blocks were Hermiston Court, Weir Court, and Glenalmond Court.

I stayed in the middle one 12/4 Weir Court and I think that’s the building on the left.

Because weir court brought you out at the shops I’m almost sure that’s it.

Yeah the vans facing towards the playing fields.

Struggling to remember, I think it was 6. We moved out when I was in primary 1 to be fair, but I do remember going back wit my auntie to pick something up from her pals in the 90s so that’s where any real memories of the layout may come from.

I've lived in 3 tower blocks, they all had varying amounts depending on the configuration - IIRC they all had either 4 larger or 6 smaller flats per floor

Might be getting mixed up with a flat I had at Wester Hailes Drive but I'm sure the flat I was in had 3 flats on one side and 2 flats and a drying area on the other. It was a long time ago so might be remembering it wrong.

As a apprentice plumber 38 years ago we got called out to a leak in the Black Swan's toilets.

Shit smeared on the walls and looked like it had been there a while too.

I think jakies used to nip in the side door on Cockburn Street and use the bogs but going by some of the drinkers in the bar I have my doubts.

A real spit and sawdust bar.

I remember being in there once and a drunk at the bar spewed on the floor as he stood there and then ordered another pint and got served.

I think it's at the back of Cable Wynd House. I think the road going up past the shop on the right is Water Street.

Edit: Linksview house, maybe.

Each of the 3 blocks had 95 flats, so that's an average of 5.94 over the 16 floors. :D

There was one flat on the ground floor which was the caretakers.

Was this the original fire station and then it moved next door to #3, with the Police then taking over #5 (pictured)?

Edinphoto seems to suggest that the photo above on this thread that you quoted is the police station.

Your description however does make sense.  Might take the time to look up old maps to see it they can shed some light on it.

Where is this?  Initial thoughts were St James Place or something similar but now don't think so, unless that's the banana flats?
