I'm guessing its taken from Central Hall. But upstairs,

Screenshot-20190712-070436-Maps.jpg

That view is from the middle of the end of Earl Grey Street, beside Central Hall. See the wee spire to the left of the bigger one ( Barclay Church)?  If you move right, towards Central Hall, the wee spire gets hidden from view.

To me, it looks like It might have been taken from the top of a building on the other side of the street, maybe down the road a bit, and cropped.

I think maybe taken from a tenement window on the other side of the street from Central Hall.

I’m guessing the photographer would have to be a giraffe, to take that angle of photo from Central Hall.

Nothing like it 6.30am Sunday morning pouring rain heavy raincoat, water running off your hat down your neck, down one hill up another, all in beautiful bright mood raising buildings, loved by the residents and attacked by vicious cats. Life was good.

Dumbiedykes, Carnegie Street, Brown Street, Salisbury Street. We lived "next door" to them all but our tenement was a palace in comparison.

Is that the Drive on the left side of the picture, I really appreciate the picture, this whole thread  is like This Is My Life to me. I love Canada had a wonderful life here, but nothing here has the sentimentality that Edinburgh and my past there has.

Bob I thought it was the top of the Drive as well but the sign says its Wester Broom Gardens, so I think its the junction of the Gardens / Avenue, a couple of streets from where you lived.

St Andrews Sq Bus Station 1969

This picture reminds me of the SMT buses that they used to run from the Square for all the away games in the 60s. Used to put an advert with times and prices in the Evening News. I was sitting in the front seat upstairs in a bus like this leaving Airdrie after a 5-0 Texaco Cup game when the locals decided that the ventilation on the bus wasn't up to scratch so started lobbing bricks through the windows. Cheeky wee scamps that they were...

 Fair points, well made.

I reckon it was taken next the the Methodist Hall though, seems like it was from that side of the road, and from high up.

I should be walking past there some time tomorrow. I'll take a photo. :D

What happened there and where ?

Largo Place, just off the Leith end of Ferry Rd. WW2 bomb damage.  The wife lived there when she was wee, and I've heard her talk about playing in the 'bombie'.

Thanks for that Lemongrab.

Brings it home to you that the war touched lives near and far.

Found this about the bombing.

Kenneth Anderson

5 Largo Place
Left Leith Academy: 1937
died: 08/04/1941
info:

Kenneth Anderson died after a German plane had dropped land mines in Largo place. Kenneth was a telegraph operator. Kenneth died on his way to Leith Hospital (he died from his injuries.)
Kenneth's war grave commission memorial link. www.cwgc.org/search/certificate.aspx;

The following is an extract from the Edinburgh news.
Bombs
The bombs they released in our area were two land mines, suspended from Parachutes, which silently fell from the sky, giving no warning until they reached Ground level and exploded. One bomb fell near Largo place/ Keddie Gardens park, destroying the corner of a Tenement and killing at least two people, at the same time badly damaging the Town Hall in Ferry Road (now Leith Library). Running Parallel with Ballantyne and Largo place is the Water of Leith and the then railway embankment. The second bomb fell in the deep embankment, thus forcing the blast in an upwards direction, had it fallen on more level ground, Ballantyne and other areas would have been levelled to the ground.

The "Excursion" buses ran well into the 70s as well.

I don't know about regular use, but up to last year it was getting used for occasional rail tours.  On this video it crosses the level crossing at 3:23.

1848. The church, which is now 'The Hub', on Castle Hill.  The building still under construction in front of it is St Columba's, at the top of Johnston Terrace.

As a 16yo postie in the mid 80s I used to get a pie n pint there every Friday LT when delivering the mail.

Almost as enjoyable as Mrs Blacks Daughter at 38 Biggar Rd flashing the puppies at me every time she heard me coming down the path
