Not sure. Who or what was Bowens?

James Bowen & Sons Ltd.

Near the bus depot at Longstone (on Murrayburn Road).  They repaired lorries, trucks, tractors, heavy machinery, that sort of thing.

My brother who was a plant fitter to trade worked there for a few years when he left the army.

That rings a very vague bell. Thats at the other end of Murrayburn Road. Not that far mind. A five minute walk.

When I was wee and stayed in Colinton there used to be an old abandoned house that sat at bottom of school playing fields. Tesco is there now anyone know what it used to be?

Jings!

I know 4 of these folk.

I used to get the barrel of my wee motorbike bored and honed at lunch time at Bowen's

I just used to say "please mister my bikes seized", the guy would come back ten minutes later having machined it, give me the oversize for a piston and never take more than a quid of me.

I finally learned how to mix 2stroke.

Tescos at Oxgangs?

I remember the playing fields belonging to the Army with a wee stadium and running track at the back of where Tescos is now.

I remember the derelict structure near where the roundabout is now,I thought it was an old stable block.

I can usually get the Southside areas pretty good, but some of the older ones like the Colinton ones are places that ring a bell, but they were only places that my father took the family for a wee bus ride and a walk. Some of the places I see were in those days "in the country", so the change is really major to me. The picture with the #1 tram at Corstorphine was very familiar. We used to take it out and watch the planes during the war at Turnhouse. Then walk for miles up Cammo Road wherever the hell that was. Later we watched the airport modernise into a modern facility. I used to take my wee boy in his buggy on a Sunday morning when I lived in Clerwood down to the airport and buy him a wee treat and I would have a coffee.

The main interest for me in this thread is the major contrast between my Edinburgh and this strangely modern place which I really don't know.

Brother says he recognised the names of all the guys mentioned but can't remember their faces.  Suspect they will have changed a bit though, s my brother is 68 himself.

Original layout Inside the Wester Hailes Shopping Centre (Westside Plaza now)

I was going up on those stairs looking down over the railings as I went and read the headline on this man's Evening News - John Lennon shot dead. My JFK moment as a kid.

He'll remember Tommy Easton.  Wee guy, red hair. Looked like Billy Bremner!

I’ve been trying to find an old pic of the subway ,as you came out Wester Hailes Centre , that you would use if you lived in the Calders. No joy as yet.

Coming from the Calders and as you cut through the school you’d take a right just before the tunnel within the school grounds and walk up the path that led to the subway.

On the centre side of the subway wall there was a graffiti saying which was there for donks but I can’t remember what it said?

Im doing great eh? ?

Is this the subway?

I think the graffitii says 'If art is a crime may god forgive me.'

Lewis Collins didnt open Presto. Presto was what was once Ailsa which used to have both the upatairs and downstairs.

At some point Presto gave up the downstairs and it was re-opened as a 'market place' complete with 'stalls' selling a conrnucopia of cheap shite and clothes you couldnt wear next to naked flames. This trading paradise was known as The Forum and bizarrely that is what Lewis Collins opened.

When I worked there in the 70’s it was a big store over two floors, it then became a shop just on the top floor with the lower floor converted into an indoor market.

Yeah that's correct. Makes sense as when we climbed in was separate rooms to side and big open corridor up the middle. Always thought was rather odd as was on public side of the barracks fence. I grew up there in 90's just wondered if anyone had actually seen what the building looked like or its use
