Fee paying by the way, Mum was fuming, five pounds a term in the late 60's :laugh2:

I was at Wardle Primary in the early 70’s and it was the same deal. The working class elite we were.

Dalkeith Road at Lutton Place, in the 1939/40 era it became Stonehouses Licensed Grocer. Their son went into the Navy at start of WW2 and died in action at sea, his name is in the Book at Edinburgh Castle. Nelsons at the top of the picture, and that should be the entrance to Ushers Brewery between the Church and the Castle of Clouts. Interesting corner for my age group. Canters on the back of lorries coming out of Ushers, Band of Hope at the church, and Mrs Craigies wee shop for lemonade and sweeties next to the pub, head in the door of the Castle and boy voiced shouts of "your beers made o' water". Not only is it early in the morning when I am typing this, but the area was part of the early part of my life.

The licensed grocer later became "Logan and Sons". The younger son was a mate and back in the day, a big Hearts' fan.

Ushers, across the street, was my last place of employment before moving over here. I'm no connoisseur but their lager was shite!

Beat me to it.

No shopping trip into town is complete without a pit-stop at Mathers.

Somewhere in West Pilton

Looks like what used to be the shops at the bottom of West Pilton Rise. Halway down before you get to West pilton bank and the campuses of Pirniehall and St David's schools.

Used to be only Pirniehall when I started attending there in 1972.

looks like that to me too.

Reminds me of a shop we called Drysalters. A cross between a chemist and a hardware store.

I was sent down there on a Saturday morning to buy an Abdine my dad used regularly as a hangover cure.

I think that was around the corner from the the newsagents and sweetie shop, nearer to West Pilton Park. The otherside nearer to Pennywell Road is where the chippy was.

Can anyone tell me what happened to the massive church in the middle of the picture ?
Looks to me like it is on the site of the commonwealth pool.

I am sure Sharpie could put me right.

It's Nelson's print works, on the site they built the Scottish Widows monstrosity.

AS a kid, I've walked past this literally thousands of times.  Right across the street from this is the church where the memorial service for Dave Mackay was held.

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

When it was John Watson's school I played my first ever school cricket game there on that very patch of grass.   I played for Trinity and took a wicket in my first over.  Think the batsman must have been single fish cos I was no cricketer.

Of course it is.

At Currie? Looks very open. Could it be Riccarton in Ayrshire?

I think it's Riccarton Junction in the Borders, that would explain the train having Hawick on it.

The sign on the building on the right edge could say 'Craigpark Quarry Company'.  I've seen addresses for that at Port Hamilton and Ratho, but can't find any pictures of those places which look like that photo.

It looks like it's the other way round @Maroon Sailor. I think the guy in the old picture is standing down the side street on the other side of the road from your picture - by Brauhaus ??

Yeah, if you look at the lintel above the door in the original pic and then compare you can see which two clearly match.
