It is - New Market Road

👍I had a summer job there in the school holidays with “Kings Meat” - the owner Norrie Harper was an absolute gentleman. Great bunch of guys that worked there under Norrie’s stewardship.

It would have been somewhere near the slaughter houses where the Corn Exchange is now.  The fruit and veg market was where M&S, Home Bargains etc are now.

Spot on. Lindsays was the fruit supplier. The “Trendsetter” was the store there when I was wee just before the fruit market - remember King Kenny doing a book signing there.

Trendsetter , that’s a blast from the past , the other place up there from yesteryear was Manclarks ( further along the road)

Yeah remember it - backed onto the other entrance to the old Fruit Market at the Bainfield end. Massive fire sadly brought its demise.

And in 1935, apparently ...

Could that be a bit later than 1935 a woman showing her lower legs, and the boy with the sports jacket and casual pants, doesn't seem to be any tram lines, and the cars seem newer than '35

Did Lindsays have a Fruit & Veg shop on Gorgie Road? A girl in my class at schools dad had a shop in Gorgie in the 70’s, pretty certain it was Lindsays (time might be playing tricks on me)

I remember queueing for ages at the Trendsetter on West Harbour Road to get Jim Watt’s autograph just after he won the world championship. Had the autographed photo in pride of place in my bedroom, not a clue where it is now. Probably thrown in the bin with a lot of my other stuff when I left home by my tidiness obsessed dad.

Possibly mate, my folks knew the chap that ran Lindsays at the Fruit Market at Hutchison who came from Currie. ‘Helm’ was his surname.

I do remember Rankins having a place in Gorgie as an old girlfriend worked there in the 80s.

Could be right, Bob not sure where the date came from tbqh.  If I look closely however I think I can see tram lines. albeit they're very faint, and those wires above, would they be for the trams?  As for the style, I'm sure those from the Capital very quite dapper and risque! :D

Ahh, Rankins rings a bell, think I’ve just made up Lindsays!

 Could be Newington Road.

It is Bob, just read a wee story about how an angry mob gathered outside that address where Robert Knox lived, as they were unhappy that he escaped unpunished for his part in the crimes committed by Burke and Hare.

In the spirit of keeping the peace I will give you the tramlines, but I want to keep the lassie with the legs, and the 1946ish Austin car on the left of the picture. I'll also give you, the lad with his hands in his pockets, remember though the lassie wi the  legs and short skirt is mine.😀

I seem to recall reading or hearing that story at one time. They were pretty elegant houses at one time, and the shops in my time were generally high quality.

The thing I always remember from there, was the Martell Casino, was never in it though.

Scotland Yard I reckon. The filled in tunnel would be the one that runs to Waverley. I think the proper name of the park is King  George Park.

Still can’t imagine all those houses in that triangle fitting in there.

It also always amazes me how many people must have lived in Greenside which doesn’t even properly exist anymore.

Horse back riders were quite common in the day. There was a Riding School not far away and they used to bring their learners on their mounts to the Park.  Boy that park was something, horses, sheep, kids all over the area, older folks out for walks, a few cars, parkies who had houses at some of the gates keeping order, The names, the wee hill, echo rock, the gutted haddie, the basin. the crags, the bog, the valley, the high road, the low road, if you were a local kid and didn't know them all you were probably a candidate for Duncan Street School the place for the slow learners.
