Morgan , it couldn’t be the one that’s opposite the Merlin ? It might be it moved premises from one side of the road to the other? currently called Houseproud .

Isn't the one across from the Merlin Home Hardware?

Thanks for your replies, chaps.

No, it’s definitely not either Houseproud of Morningside or Hardware.

It was down the road quite a bit, on the other side.  It may have been in the premises of a baker called Murray’s that was in Morningside about 100 years ago!

Thanks again for your efforts.  👍

I have a vague childhood memory of a hardware shop at around 227 Morningside Road.

Same side but up the hill a bit from the Canny Man's.

Beside the, ahem, "book"shop.

The hardware shop rings a bell. I used to go out with a girl that lived in a stair near there.

My best mate back then stayed over it too (John Temple) don’t see him much these days, but he is a hibby. Also the Hendo brothers stayed above it. Good Jambos and if they’re on here they would definitely know.

Thinking about that flat and remembered a funny story. We were in bed one night and the lads downstairs were being really loud and pumping out music at 2am. I was a bit annoyed to say the least so my girlfriend said she’d go and speak to them as she didn’t trust me to not do something daft if I went down. She came back a couple of minutes later and said they’d told her they could do what they wanted. So I pulled on my trousers and went to their door. Obviously expecting the small polite fashion graduate again he shouted “I thought I told you to **** off” before he aggressively swung the door open. Instead he got the furious, shirtless, definitely not polite bloke with a skinhead at the door. I’m pretty sure he may have soiled himself before lots of stammered apologies and promises to behave in future.

I’d have preferred a bit of dub reggae. No point in rushing things.

Christ, if only I’d typed ‘ironmonger’ instead of ‘hardware store’.

I remember that store Morgan. Can’t remember the name of it though. Just up from where the small Sainsbury’s is now.

Don't know about the shop being called Scott's but in 1900 it was owned by William Barrie

As an aside the one at Cadzow Place was known as Duffys.

As an aside to that aside my dad refers to these old fashioned hardware type places as drysalters.

In 1940/41 John P Munro is listed at the address. No entry under Ironmonger or Drysalters that I can find so far.

1940 Valuation roll (latest one available) shows the shop as a Grocer and Fruiterer run byJohn P Munro. Ironmonger/Drysalter /Hardware store must have been later.

Southfield Rovers, anybody ever heard of them?  Can't find anything on the internet about them.

I believe they might have played somewhere around the Duddingston/Bingham maybe Niddrie area.

Probably long defunct now.

There’s a few streets in portobello with the name Southfield in them one up near the golf course if I remember, might be around there?

Yeh, I'd imagine that they must have played around that area.

Top of the Walk, completely different nowadays.

The he building on the LHS is now the entrance to John Lewis and the buildings on the RHS long gone and where the roundabout with the kinetic sculpture was. (1955)

Spot on. The only building that's still there is the unusual one on the corner.

Don’t think so,that’s where I’m from, I’d have been six then so it’s not me in pic. I was thinking the gap between the buildings just left off the sign was the docks entrance, think it’s ocean drive now.

Madeira Street goes downward at the end, same as pic. Angle of street behind seems similar. Same type of shitty wall on the end

plus those cobbles seem very similar😁

The building to the left of the pic is on a main road,I’m thinking it’s Lindsay road.
