In the same period, King George IV Bridge, appearing on the above map, changes to plain old George IV Bridge. & North Bridge was North Bridge Street
Shanks said no
I didn't recognise the name Bridewell in the top corner of the map beside the jail so I had a search A little-known building by the renowned Scottish architect Robert Adam (1728-1792). The building is the Bridewell, a new jail for Edinburgh, built between 1791 and 1796 on Calton Hill on a crag overlooking the city. It was demolished in the late nineteenth century. Shanks said no
More of Bridewell more info Edinburgh's need for a Bridewell or similar institution is mentioned in an early nineteenth century book Modern Athens, quoting from an earlier account by Maitland. "Edinburgh", says Maitland "being become, as it were, the common receptacle for the strolling poor, lazy beggars, idle vagrants, and common prostitutes, who crowded hither from all parts of the kingdom, wherefore it was, in the year 1632, judged necessary to erect a House of Correction, for employing ans publishing these disorderly persons, and pests of mankind"

Shanks said no
Curling was popular Curling House at Duddingston Loch Octagonal curling house designed by the architect, William Playfair, in 1823 for the Duddingston Curling Society. The upper floor was used as a studio by the Reverend John Thomson, landscape artist and minister of the church from 1805-40.He named his studio 'Edinburgh', allowing his housekeeper to say that he had 'gone to Edinburgh' if a parishioner called when he was painting. It lies on the shores of Duddingston Loch, a nature reserve near to Holyrood Park and below Arthur's Seat. Guthrie Street was originally called New College Wynd, which firts appears on maps around the same time as the current Glen Street (off Lauriston Place) appears (1871).
