Brexit Deal agreed ( updated )

It’s all working really, so it is!

Sales of milk and cream to the EU have dropped by 96 per cent – and yet, silence from the Brexiteers

If Brexiteers just needed to see with their own eyes what things would look like once we left the single market, perhaps they should take a look now

This is Boris Johnson’s last chance. There is always, as there was with coronavirus lockdowns, that moment when all the warning signs are there, and fast government action is needed.

Now that UK milk and meat exports have been virtually wiped out, alongside the dying fishing sector, with Brexit that moment is now. Boris Johnson could re-open the Brexit trade deal, ensure frictionless trade and save thousands of jobs. But only if he cares enough about the voters he won over five years ago.

So let’s give Boris Johnson and all Brexiteers the maximum benefit of the doubt. Let’s say Boris Johnson isn’t a sociopath and that, in 2016, he meant it when he said the idea of Brexit creating trade barriers was “utterly absurd”. Let’s say that last Christmas, when he repeated that promise after signing the EU trade deal, he truly believed everything would be fine for the people whose jobs rely on EU trade. Let’s say Brexiteers just needed to see with their own eyes what things would actually be like once we left the single market.

Well… take a look. The UK’s Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has reported that the UK’s sale of milk and cream to the EU has dropped by 96 per cent; chicken and beef by 80 per cent. Food and drinks exports are 40.9 per cent down since last February and exporters have lost a total of £1bn since January.

This is largely due to the additional paperwork needed now that the Dover-Calais crossing has become the external border of the EU market. The rules around food and drink are therefore no longer the same on either side of the border. Unless Boris Johnson fixes this, British farmers will pay with their jobs. In 2016, he told them: “The extra incentive for our farmers to go for Leave is getting rid of that burden.” Only a monster would promise thousands of farmers that Brexit would free them of costly paperwork, deliver a Brexit that drowns them in paperwork, and then do nothing about it.

People voted for Brexit and for Boris Johnson because they honestly believed that both were about delivering for ordinary people. They saw a system that favours the rich and powerful, and they wanted to take something back for the average man and woman of the UK. Tragically, the FDF reports that “small businesses have been hardest hit”. The increased cost of doing business has been swallowed easily by the larger corporations while the little ones are choking.

Our economy is still on life support because of government assistance, including the furlough scheme, and yet jobs have already started to trickle out through that Brexit hole. And yet with furlough scheduled to end later this year, along with the grace periods on further trade barriers, Boris Johnson is refusing to plug that hole before it gets much bigger. Why?

Fixing this would require re-opening the Brexit trade deal, as trade associations and a parliament trade committee are begging him to. Boris Johnson knows that if he did that, it would be a clear sign that, two years after the election, Brexit still isn’t “done”, as his manifesto promised. But anyone whose fishing company is struggling knows Brexit isn’t done. Anyone filling out mountains of costly paperwork to sell their livestock knows Brexit isn’t done. Anyone who lives in Northern Ireland knows Brexit isn’t done. Hell, anyone who has read the deal knows Brexit isn’t done. The only question now is whether Boris Johnson would rather protect an exposed lie, or actually help people.

It's going to have to get a lot worse than that before Johnson and chums finally force the EU to back down and admit the UK to the single market without being members of the EU

Touch of sarcasm Smithee just imagining how the Daily Mail will sell it if we were to rejoin the Single Market to save agriculture and fisheries in the UK. The cards to play would be acceptance of all EU rules without the ability to influence them and a big wedge of annual dosh. Then you'll see the EU cave! 😉

Appears to have been forced out by the hardliners.

This isn't good news for Northern Ireland, especially if a religious zealot takes charge, as they'll take N.Ireland back decades.

More good news on the fishing front.

The UK government has failed to negotiate the right for British boats to be allowed to fish the Norwegian Arctic waters, where the majority of the UK landed Cod comes from.

Sunlit uplands 👍

Hope not, because Scotland will get all the dinosaurs, weegieland would be a no go area, it's bad enough when they get the day trippers over for a match, what would it be like if they lived there all the time.

Presumably, according to that DUP guy, dinosaurs never existed.

But I agree with the OFFS scenario you describe.

Jersey to be without power as French sulks grow !!

Fishing row triggers French threat of Jersey power cut - BBC News

The French government has voiced anger over what it calls new UK fishing rules in the Channel and warns it could cut electricity to Jersey in response.

Maritime Minister Annick Girardin told the French parliament that the new rules governing access to Channel Islands waters were unacceptable.

She said "we are ready to use the retaliatory measures" under the UK-EU post-Brexit trade deal.

She then mentioned France's underwater cables supplying power to Jersey.

"I am sorry it has come to this [but] we will do so if we have to," she said.

In a statement to AFP news agency, the French fisheries ministry said the UK had introduced "new technical measures" linked to licences for fishing off the Channel Islands, which had not been communicated to the EU and were, therefore, "null and void".

UK unilaterally changed the fishing rules with no consultation on the other side.

France and the EU then casually mention that maybe someone might turn off the electricity supply to Jersey without consultation, or deny UK banks their EU licenses.

Two can play hardball.

You can expect a UK capitulation in the next week or so.

Now the French fisher persons discuss blockade of Jersey

UK sends Royal Navy patrol ships to monitor Jersey blockade - BBC News

The UK will send two Royal Navy patrol vessels to monitor a planned blockade of Jersey's main port amid a fishing rights row with France.

PM Boris Johnson pledged his "unwavering support" for the island, a Crown dependency 14 miles (22km) off France in the English Channel.

It came after the French government threatened to cut off Jersey's electricity over a post-Brexit dispute.

The row emerged over a new licensing system for French fishing vessels.

The system - introduced by the Government of Jersey under the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) - requires French boats to show they have a history of fishing in Jersey's waters.

But French authorities said "new technical measures" for fishing off the Channel Islands had not been communicated to the EU, rendering them "null and void".

The AFP news agency reported that about 100 French fishing vessels would sail to Jersey's port on Thursday as part of a protest against the new rules, quoting the head of fisheries for the Normandy region, Dimitri Rogoff.

Mr Rogoff said the vessels would not try to block the port at St Helier and would return to France in the afternoon, AFP reported.

Downing Street said Mr Johnson believed "any blockade would be completely unjustified" and that the Navy vessels would be deployed as a "precautionary measure".

The prime minister held talks with Jersey's Chief Minister John Le Fondré and Minister of External Affairs Ian Gorst.

In this particular case, Boris is right.

Jersey is a UK protectorate and French fishermen were threatening an illegal blockade.

Nothing he can do if the French flip the switch and turn the lights off though.

Easy...just block the wine imports

The French governments simply bow down when things get tough at home and reform is a word they don't recognise

What the UK media didn't tell you;

France also sent two armed Customs boats to the scene to balance out Boris' diddy fleet.

The head of the French fishermen delegation met with the Jersey minister for the Environment for almost two hours in neutral waters with their boats tied up alongside each other. Talks were apparently cordial and productive.

The French protest lasted for over 6 hours before going home.

But the UK media paints it as "BRAVE BORIS STARES DOWN THE FROGGIES"
