Off to Belgium/France next week so hoping to try a few beers whilst there, don't know how much time we will have though as we are on a WWI Battlefields tour, however the hotel we are staying at is only a few miles from Silly (don't laugh, it's a real place) and there is a brewery there so here's hoping the hotel stocks some of the local brews.

I've had a couple of their beers but they produce about a dozen so I've got a few still to try.

With a name like Silly it's probably in French-speaking Belgium.

If it was in a Flemish area it would, one imagines, be called Daft.

It's in the Wallonia region of Belgium and I think French is the language which is mostly spoken there.

Managed to get a few beers whilst over in Belgium.

One of the highlights of the trip was when the coach took me to Contalmaison, this was not on the Itinerary but they made a special detour to it, just for me.

I had asked the tour guide the previous night what he knew about McCrae's Battalion and to my surprise he knew quite a bit and when I told him I was a Hearts man, he said I'll take you out to Contalmaison tomorrow, and he did, not only that but preceded to inform the entire coach about the sacrifice that the players, staff and supporters of Heart of Midlothian and other teams had made during WWI and of how 3 Hearts players fell on the first day of the Somme offensive.  I have to say it made me incredibly proud to be a Hearts supporter when he was telling everybody what my team had done during WWI, we stopped at the Cairn for 5-10 minutes, enough time for me to pay my respects and get some photos taken.   I later found the players' names on the Thiepval Memorial.

Sleemans Honey Brown Ale.

Its difficult to get over here as its a Canadian Beer. Bottles only through some specialist beer stockists.

Get off the river, get to a bar and order a couple of Jugs of Honey Brown. Absolute heaven!!

Tried Williams Bros Rubus the other night. I really enjoyed it. It’s a grapefruit IPA, only sold in Aldi.

Currently enjoying a bottle of Arran Blonde straight from the fridge after a good day on the hills. Bliss before dinner.

Not so much a ‘favourite’ beer but one I was given last night by friends of ours who are over here from California. Anyone else seen it or tasted it?

Maybe he saw it and instantly thought of you? Could he not find a beer named "Tedious Bore" for you as well?

Picked up a few beers from beer zoo in Portobello

Mills as Hills was lovely, coffee flavoured stout, as was the Beavertown heavy water.

Wasnt so keen on the Fynes wee heavy, poured a bit flat for my liking and no head at all, still to try the rest.

Being a ***** of habit,  I tend to buy the same beers every time they are needed.    It was San Miguel for a long time but somehow crept on to Kronenbourg.    Now it's Coors Light.    If I'm just having the one tin,   as is often the case,   it has to be the 'pint' tins I have in.     Having a standard size tin just doesn't seem correct.

There are a vast multitude of craft beers available now that nobody needs to drink that mass produced rat's piss.

I like a lot of boutique beers too but the beer snobbery indicated on here is hilarious.    Some kind of desperation to be beer elite.      Have a day off.

There was one or two wee clues in your photos, as they are mostly of Stouts/Porters.

Am partial to the odd stout/porter myself, only they don't like me anymore, so the most I'll have is one here and there, in saying that I've just got another case from beerwulf in Holland and I bought a few stouts/porters including an Estonian Porter called 'Must Kuld', strong as well at 7.8%.

I also like IPA's and there are some very nice American IPA's around at the moment.

Had a bottle of this last night, it was one of the beers I brought back from Belgium.

Quite nice, but you could taste it was strong (8%) which you often don't taste with Belgian beer.

Not so good if you like a particular beer that doesnt agreee with you.

Have to check out that beewulf site. :thumb:

That beer I had last night,Very Big Moose was 12%, was bloody lovely but at that strength I limited myself to just the one, but also had a couple of Fierce beers called Cafe Racer, which are a coffee/chocolate flavoured stout, which aren't as strong at 6.5%.

Some great bars in Edinburgh now doing a lot of these beers, usually out for a few beers and a meal after the game, Cloisters and The Hanging Bat are a couple of great bars for these type of beers.

Still swear by Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout (660ml) if you want a stout in a bottle.

Can't wait to get my chops round one but won't be for. Couple of weeks yet

I'm not sure if I've posted this before, but a friend brought me this back from Poland the other day because they know how much I love it:

Heavenly - got through the whole bottle in about 3 minutes

You can get other ones, like Łomża and Perła, but they don't come close to this!

How does it compare with Zywiec? Not a huge fan of Polish beer so far - they tend to be a bit too strong and also a wee bit sweetish for my tastes - but Zywiec is the one I've enjoyed most.

It's a 6% honey beer, so probably not in your taste then!  I would say that the Ciechan Miodowe (miód means honey) one is probably the sweetest, most authentic taste of honey in it, the other 2 I mentioned seem to be a little bit less sweet and taste a bit more artificial.

Polish beers in general tend to be a bit stronger than the average "Council Beer" that you'd get in the supermarket, between 5 and 6% usually.  You could give Warka, Lech, Żubr, or Tyskie a go as well, if you're wanting something standard to try versus Żywiec.  I usually go for one of those if I'm getting a 4 pack in for the football

Have you tried 'Johannes', I quite liked that, never seen it in a supermarket though, you'd have to order it online.

All of the ones you list, except for the honey beer are ok, not a lover of honey beers tbh.

Seeing as Zywiec has been mentioned.

Has anybody tried Zywiec Porter?  Utterly fantastic, stunning, well I thought so.

Never tried it, but had a quick look for it online and I vaguely recall seeing it when I was in Poland a few times.  Might give it a shot if I can find it :)

I think the honey beer is definitely a Marmite type thing.  I only know people who think it's either amazing or rubbish, with nothing in between.  The great thing is that there's always an alcoholic drink that suits everyone, regardless of taste

Thanks for the info - interesting. "Miod" being from the same linguistic root as "Mead", no doubt?

I don't actually mind a strong-ish / sweet-ish beer from time-to-time - some of the Trappist Dubbel or Trippel beers being an example -  but I'd only ever have one, usually at the end of an evening. What I'm not so keen on is having to drink a beer like that when I'm planning to have a few pints and am looking for something refreshing that isn't going to get me hammered any earlier than normal. Not keen on the likes of Superbock for that reason.

I've tried Tyskie, which is alright, and have seen some of the others you mention, but definitely prefer Czech & Slovak beers to Polish ones in general: not usually quite as strong, more refreshing, and a "cleaner" (less cloying) taste. However, as you went on to say, there's a beer / style-of-beer out there for everyone, thankfully! (Unless you just don't like beer...    :conf11: :freak: )
