The Lisbon Lions used to meet in The Harp in Corstorphine once a month (think Ronnie Simpson stayed local). All were fine apart from Bertie Auld who was a total prick.

Used to speak to Ronnie Simpson in the Barnton many years ago. Another bar that's gone.

My old dear and sister were on a flight to Vegas many years ago. The flight was a nightmare with the unwashed hoards heading to their Vegas gathering.

They said they were asked repeatedly to settle down on the flight and eventually they all did bar one, who was dancing on the seats etc. "apparently he used to be a player for them.... Bertie Auld?"

Spoilers below (to save folks eyes), but can you imagine having booked a trip to Vegas and landing up in this hotel? ?

Total tosspot of a man. A few lads I was at school with were on S forms at Hibs when he was the manager and he was universally disliked by them all. Went as far as humiliating one of them at a training session as his parents couldn't afford new boots. The lad never went back and it totally killed his dream of being a footballer.

He did the same in The Harp on two lunchtimes I was in. Nasty and personal abuse towards an undeserving barmaid who he wrongly accused of getting his drinks order wrong. And he embarrassed a drinker who had the temerity to ask him how he was doing. An utter throbber of a man.

As regards the Celtic bus from The Centurion - it seemed to be non-locals who travelled to the pub to get the bus. We certainly never recognised anyone from the area getting on.

Quick question...

Does anyone remember an old club (or maybe a club night) from about 10 - 15 years ago that deliberately played trashy pop and ‘rubbish’ music?  The conceit was you’d hate it, but of course it was really popular.

Sorry to bump this thread. I stumbled across this Googling for something else (as you do), and became engrossed in the whole conversation where @Morgan is trying to recall the name of an American style diner, on the right heading up Frederick Street, street level, open in the mid-Eighties, and definitely not Garfunkel's.

Was it Desperate Dan's?

Thanks for the bump but sorry, that wasn't it's name.

Now you've got me started thinking about this, all over again!!

Apologies for that! It ticked so many of the boxes. I worked in WH Smith on Princes Street (now Zara) in 1984-85, and it was a popular choice for a treat then. Definitely more of a restaurant than a bar, though, and was before Rose Street going up. Red paint exterior, and Desperate Dan theme to some of the menu - Cow Pie, Cactusville Burger, that kind of thing.

That has to be the most vomit inducing thing I've seen on JKB. I don't care what it cost, if that shower turned up I'd be leaving in a trice! The bird at 0:36 in the hooped bikini....

Yes I remember it - had a meal there once. A colleague used to work their part-time and he got the hotel to run the bar at our union dances.

Only once went away with the Centurion bus. Dens Park 77-78 our first season down. Remember it being quite an eventful trip for someone just not long turned 14. Seem to recall the Celtic bus leaving at the same time and no trouble between the two sets of fans.

Still seems strange to this day that a Hearts bus and a Celtic bus could leave from the same pub.

Yeah I'll bet it was. Drank in the Oak that night. Hardly a word said by anyone. Just sat there in stunned silence apart from when a Hibby we knew tried to noise us up. Not a good move on his part as a few other Jambos decided to shut him up.

Remember going for a job in there before it was even open, one of those group interactive interviews, didn't get the job but the majority of those that did were on the same group interview so from day one I knew 80% of the bar staff, eventually got to know a couple of the barmaids much better!

What was it called before Bewley's Stuart?

I'm pretty sure it had another name, but was still a coffee shop.

Edwards was some place at the weekends btw!!

I remember that at one stage it was a MacVitties Guest or a Crawfords bakers.

Well done, Joey!

There was a Bewleys tobacconist at Tollcross, underneath what became the Penthouse Bar.

I knew I’d heard the name somewhere.
