General Election

Recommended Posts

On the day a general election is proposed, there's already a situation where the Labour Party is being criticised for attempting to put some focus on traditional issues like the economy, NHS and other services, instead of dancing to the Tory Party / media tune that the ONLY show in town is Brexit. The dye is already cast on that score. It's quite incredible - and absurd - that basic, big ticket issues are already being kicked into the long grass by the media. Brexit is of course a very important part of this election but the prospective winning party will also have to govern the country on a day to day and issue to issue basis, much like every other imcoming government. All of the majot departments need to be run. All associated budgets must be set. A wide ranging political and economic philosophy has to be set out and enacted.

Excuse me Tory Party and compliant media..if you don't mind too much, I'd like to find out what everyone plans to do in government should they be elected. To concentrate on the day job and who's best to carry it out.

I think the SNP might lose a couple of seats, but if the Lib Dems don't select a new candidate in Orkney/Shetland that could go any way and will the Hearts vote prop up Murray again?

So it could be 56 SNP v 3 Tory.

Scotland and Northern Ireland have the most political intrigue in this election, England will be about how many Tory seats gain from Labour and Wales is likely to stay the same.

I should add that Labour will not be wiped out, they have some seats that are just never going Tory. Corbyn does have some support

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Agree with all of that. Corbyn's support may be small but it's very passionate and in too many cases aggressive. There are swathes of seats all over Northern England and South Wales which would elect a donkey with a red rosette. Probably about 150 seats. That's where FPTP unfairly favours Labour and Conservative- their respective core immovable supports are all concentrated in certain geographical areas, though in fairness that's collapsed in Scotland.

It's going to be fascinating to see how it all plays out. We seem to be voting a bit frequently these days - I hope there isn't voter fatigue and a low turnout.

See Labour in 2010. Historic high. A year later decimated at Holyrood. 4 years later 1 MP. A year later still 3rd place.

All in 6 years.

Change can be quick and brutal.

Democrats 49 states in 1964. Republicans 49 states in 1972. Watergate and Vietnam. Republicans 49 states in 1984.

Labour: laughing stock in 1935. Landslide in 1945. Labour, suicidal, full of entryist Militants in 1983, landslides in 1997 and 2001. Conservatives, 166 seats in 1997, 400 being forecast now.

What's happening to the dodgy expenses from the last elections? [emoji2]

You might need to expand on that for non C4 news viewers. The matter doesn't seem to exist on other outlets.

It's almost like the Torys have called this election so they have avoided the tin pail. :-/

There's a bit of mileage left in it but it at least removes the embarrassment of by-elections.

The legal ramifications will play out anyway.

Reading this thread confirms my long held opinion on the independence hard liners and that it's as much about dethroning and destroying the Tory party as it is about the reality of independence. This hatred stems from Thatcher and Sturgeon is utterly blinded by it. Salmond was bad but Sturgeon has taken it to a new level. The referendum stunk of it last time.

Well they've got their fight now. This looks a straight up square go between the two. And this time it'll be last man standing. It doesn't strike me as the behaviour of parties that really care about the country or its people. It's all become very personal.

May will go all out on the union vote and it'll be a real test of independence appetite and yet again our country will be divided not on issues that effect us on a daily basis but on whether the SNP can take us out of our current union and then attempt to force us into a union with a shambolic Europe.

Sturgeon lived her formative years under Thatcher and it's clearly shaped her views so that bears out your first point. Yep - it's pure party politics, posturing and power games with the electorate the canonfodder. I've met loads of Europeans who would gladly leave the EU, which is indeed an utter shambles, dominated by 1 country. Our exit will cement that country's dominance.

Excellent post btw,.

Find a party that supports the views and values that you hold.

The only challenger to SNP up here is Labour and you habe already ruled them out.

Depends on your constituency. If it's Edinburgh West for example then I would vote Lib Dem.

So will the SNP - this vote in Scotland will be fought on a strict SNP vs Anti-SNP basis in each constituency.  Labour may end up doing surprisingly well up here as a result and take back seats from you.

I would be worried if I was you.  The SNP are going to lose seats - its just a matter of how many.

Worried why? Slab are a busted flush, and I know for a fact The Tories are not a threat, so who's taking what from the SNP, who will take between 52 and 59 seats.

Scotland will be Independent by July, perfect timing. Independence day July 12. Oh, Unionist pain will be so good. Tears and snotters everywhere.

And in the meantime the right wing Tories grab more power.  Divide and conquer aided and abetted by blinkered thinking.

I just don't see Labour's voice getting heard in Scotland, they might well have a nice set of progressive policies but who is going to vote for that, most of them are devolved issues anyway.

This election is about the EU and Independence, your vote is going to be framed around that.

Pro Independence - SNP

Unionist Pro EU - Lib Dem

Unionist Brexiteer - Conservative

I just don't see a big group for Labour to pick up and grab their votes.

The same thing could well happen in England if the Remainers get up off there arse and vote for the Lib Dems.

I agree with most of that. But I'm not sure what the lib dems can do about Brexit. Sure they can soften it a bit but then does that come across as weaknesses when it comes to negotiations? I honestly think it's just Tory v SNP. No v Yes. May and Sturgeon know it and will go all out on it. The lib dems and labour are a side show, lib dem votes would play into the SNPs hands and many will take that view and grudgingly vote tory as a one of tactical vote. This really isn't a general election it's a bitch fight!

The SNP will lose seats. They'll probably slide back to approx 40 to 45 seats at the worst. That would still massively eclipse any return they've had apart from the last one. They'll be portrayed as losing ground but in truth they still have huge support. Seats will be lost to some tactical voting, as eagerly forecast (encouraged) by the BBC and other media.

Scottish Labour voters need to realise Labour have gone in England. England is unfortunately now right wing Tory. This socialist Britain mantra is history. The only way for Scotland to avoid this is Independence, with an elected Labour party.

Your gonnae have to decide now. Scottish Independence or Tory rule. No its no buts. And if you chose Tory rule, well hell mend you.

Shut Holyrood and remove the name of Scotland from everything. Arseholes.

A bit old fashioned. But might suddenly.

10 years of SNP government bringing awful child poverty, education and struggling health fugures.

And you still get people saying thet switched from Labour to SNP because they are now the true party of the people.

Till independence is set aside or achieved this will continue. Could be 20 years of wasted time in government.

The Tories already have a Brexit mandate but are begging for a bigger one to offset the fact that not all Tory MPs will fall into line. The SNP don't need to campaign for a referendum as that mandate is also already there. It has even been endorsed by Holyrood.

Perhaps the Tory party would be better to fix their internal division instead of maligning those with a clear mandate which has already been successfully implemented.
