"2016 claims another"

It would be bad taste to hijack the latest RIP thread so I will start a thread on it.

I am seeing this a lot. Why?  It is quite ****ing ridiculous.

Celebrities die every single year.  The year I was born alone had almost one every day.

Is it fashionable on Facebook or something?

Also can't stand the "27 club" bullshit.  FFS you could have a"46" club or a "33" club or anything.

Think when so many top stars go in the one year it becomes a little out of the ordinary. This year has taken more than enough top class entertainers that weren't old enough to go. I agree somewhat though; someone said this on the Peter Vaughan thread, he was 93 FFS!

Highly annoying me too.

Social media in general is highly annoying.

People are highly annoying.

There are literally hundreds of more important things to be concerning yourself about other than dead celebrities.

Yep, old people die all the time. Same as every other year.

Not just old with these people.  It is every single time some 2 bit celebrity dies. Bizarre behavior from the Socialist Media brigade.

2016 claims another. Wish 2016 would just end already :(

Just as it's "starting to look a lot like Xmas" too. Makes it even more upsetting :(

Probably more a post for the Annoying FB behaviour.

Peter Vaughan was not a celebrity he was an actor and a fine one at that .

Same with Robert Vaughan ,Prince ,Bowie etc .

93 is a good age ,nothing wrong to showing respect to somebody you enjoyed watching their skills at work over a lifetime , same ways as if an old Hearts player dies .

It does seem more than normal amount of talented artists , sports people etc have died but many do seem to have reached the end of their natural life .Statistically there likely is slightly more than previous eras as people live longer and people who die earlier become more stand out .

And of course social media puts it more in your face and certain types go overboard .but social media does annoy on many more seriousthings ,like pushing around lies and false news ,whipping people up into mass frenzies .

To me there is no significant increase. Go to my link above and take the year you were born. It is no different. There were some 'A' listers in my year of birth.

2016 is more to do with the quality and status of the deceased, as well as the shock value of people who weren't old or obviously ill suddenly dying.

e.g. Bowie and Wogan were legends in their particular fields and that set the tone back in January.

Very much agree with the OP.

Someone quite old goes the journey. "**** off 2016." Yeah, the first year in history that anyone has died.

Good news is it starts all over again in about four weeks time. Can't wait.

As the 20th Century progressed, there were more and more fields where people could gain "celebrity" status. While at the start of the 1900s you would need newspapers to dedicate precious column inches to you to gain fame or notoriety, these days you can literally become a "celebrity" by sitting on your sofa at home watching TV (if the selection criteria for that Ant & Dec programme are anything to go by).

Are we going to pass a tipping point where no "celebrities" deaths are going to be treated like with such fanfare because everybody becomes anesthetised to the constant faux grief, or is it going to reach the stage where some no mark with a You Tube channel that has a following of 2000 wasters who do nothing else than sit around in their underwear perusing cat videos gets the full "why 2032, why?" nonsense?

As long as Robbo gets the state funeral he deserves, I couldn't care less tbh.

In 1977 there were hundreds but ehre are the main ones:

Elvis

Charlie Chaplin

Groucho Marx

Marc Bolan

Bing Crosby

Freddie Prinze

Ulysses S Grant

Joan Crawford

Steven Biko

Maria Callas

2016 did not have as many big names as that.  Literally every year has it.

It's all relative though. I can guarantee you that some 20 somethings today wouldn't be able to tell you who half of those people were. Thats not to say they weren't brilliant, just that the new generation has its own stars who they've grown up with. Some have endured wether it be through reruns of old shows, or through their parents teachings.

Social media annoys me more too. Folk change their avatars or go on about how sad it is, even though they don't normally care about the l person.

David Bowie was talented, but not my cup of tea, so I never went on Facebook straight away to say how sad I was, or too pints video after video of him. I wouldn't do that if I was a fan either.

I can understand the perspective but sometimes I do get genuinely gutted by a celebrity death.

The last one would have been Lemmy.

I had seen motorhead live well over 10 times, been a fan since I was about 8 years old and Lemmy was god. He was the absolute definition of a rock star.

Given I posted the Peter Vaughan thread, I'll try to respond to your points.

Yes, people, some famous, some respected, others unknown and undervalued, die every day, every year.

As has been pointed out though, this year has seen a remarkable amount of, dare i say, high profile artistes roll a seven.  The reference in my OP to 2016 was slightly tongue in cheek, but you will no doubt see that as arrogance on my behalf.  As no doubt this response will be too.

With the greatest respect, if 2016 did not have as many big names, how can "every year" literally have it?  Every year obviously doesn't have it, according to you, therefore "literally every year" does NOT have it.

At least be consistent in your verbosity!

Are all huge names - plenty of others too

I think its because its peoples favourites - Iconic stars and well loved celebrities that has led to the 2016 cursed year rhetoric.

Freddie Prinze?

Ulysses Grants grandson?

Steven Biko?

Are hardly household names by the way...

Wogan was a household name in the UK and Ireland as was Corbett not exactly a shock to the western world.

Every year a huge star or 2 dies then lots of other stars that are big here and there.

There is absolutely nothing extra ordinary with 2016. FFs most of that list is 60 and 70 and 80 year olds.

I just trawled through 1975, the year I was born.

?

Granted, some of the folk on the list will have been bigger at the time than I can credit them for, but at an absolute push, here's the mega-celebs that departed this earth in 1975:

?

PG Wodehouse

Susan Hayward

Tim Buckley

James Robertson Justice

General Franco

Quite a year :(

55.3 million people die each year.  Now it would be safe to extrapolate that.  Now, I am guessing this number had no major spike in 2016.  But all the celebrity ambulance chasers seem to think this has been an extra ordinary year.

The absolute fact is that 2016 was no different to any other year.  Life expectancy remains the same and so does the birth and death rates.  "2016 do one" has as much relevance as "2009 do one".

I really object to the 'celebrities are more important' shite.  Why must we do this? Constant RIP threads when 350 thousand people die every day.  Everyone claiming to be the biggest fan of the deceased even although they had never once mentioned them before on kickback.

A plane crashes in South America, 70 odd people die but all hashtags are for the famous ones.  A car crashes in Sweden killing an up and coming band and some other guy that zero ****s are given about.

Fake fake fake. People saying shit like they are "genuinely in tears" and shit on RIP threads.  It is like their entire online persona is a lie.

It's entirely possible people were saying the same about 1977 at the time.  Perhaps it is because these things happen in the moment?

I don't think anyone is under the impression that people are immortal.
