37 ( updated ) years ago today - My Favourite Derby - Robbo and Sir James Bone

Hearts Heritage

Recommended Posts

John Robertson, the finest player to wear the jersey in my lifetime.

The wee man made the single biggest contribution in turning us around from a shower of relegation fodder dross to a team worthy of representing The Heart of Midlothian.

I have been just as happy after a game on a very few occasions over the last 30 years , but I have never been happier than I was bouncing out of Tynecastle that day.

Thank you Robbo.

Bump.

A pivotal game in the history of the Edinburgh derby.

Despite Hibs' dominance in the '70's Hearts were still miles ahead in competitive derby wins, 82-56 (not inc WW2 league games), but from 3/9/83 we really put the boot down on the Hibby throat.

2 Robbo equalizers then Jimmy Bone's winner set the tone for 3 decades of dominance. 56-26 in our favour since, 138-82 in total, in the most ludicrously one-sided derby of its kind.

Remember, remember the 3rd of September.

3-2.

FTH.

Interesting stat that it's taken them 34 years at 4+ derbies per season to reach where we were prior to that match in terms of victories.

I'm 45 this year and very much doubt I'll see them reach 138. I actually wonder if I'll see them win another 32 in my lifetime to reach the 56 Hearts have achieved since that magical day. Going to die happy, hopefully many years from now!

Disgraceful that there were no TV cameras at the first derby in so long , am guessing the old and new firm games were covered. Thank God I was there to witness it first hand . FTH

says 20,000 back there

im sure there was more than that....lochend had a good support that day,and tynecastle was rammed

so how 20,000......reckon bout 26 meself

I was at the game and I remember thinking there wasn't that big a crowd - I think I saw a figure of 17,000 quoted way back when although I could be wrong. . For younger fans who wouldn't know , the threat of major crowd trouble  at these fixtures was always being spoken about by fans and media. As for the game , the only thing I remember is Robbos left foot curling shot, it was an absolute beaut. It sure set the tone for years to come , to the point Hobos were constantly being taunted with "you couldnae sell all yer tickets!". Great times.

I quite like also that we've won as many derbies since 1983 as they had won up until 1983 (well, up to 1979 or 1987 as that was the gap between their 56th and 57th wins).

If you see what I mean. :)

20,002 was the att. I always remembered. I think it's quoted in one of the articles the op has posted.

London Hearts, though, has it at 19k odd.

Not that it matters. 3-2 is probably, still, my favourite game at Tynecastle in 42 years of attending. :)

Would love to see that game again...my memory of Robbo's chip is etched in gold in my mind...a truly sensational goal...which set Tynecastle on fire...had a great view from the old enclosure...

A watershed moment for Hearts fans everywhere...and so happy I was at that game : )

The BBC was covering the Edinburgh marathon on the Sunday. Hearts were videotaping the game but the equipment stopped working in the 50th minute.

Still say that day was the best John Robertson goal I have witnessed.

The scenes when Jimmy Bone scored were incredible.

Us there a place above the legend status, because if so John Robertson is in that place.

It's hard to convey now how much trepidation we fans approached Derbies if you're of a certain age. I'd seen us win 1 competitive Derby in 15 years.

That game did feel like a game changer. Though Hibs had chances to go 2 goals up that might have changed the outcome. Alex MacDonald should get a lot of praise as well for instilling the never say die spirit.

Oh and Alan Rough played 17 games in goal for Hibs ....

I was in the enclosure that game. Wee Buds cross for JB to score the winner was a beauty

Having endured the 1970's it was a fine moment and the start of our domination over them , one I never want to come to an end , over to you Mr Levein you know the script

CL not only knows, but was hugely influential in writing the script. Normal service/dominance resumed this season.

Probably my favourite ever Hearts game but was it not Donald Park that put in that cross? Maybe my memory is playing tricks but I thought Robbo slid the ball out to Park & JB bulleted the header into the net

I might well be wrong on the cross but I'm sticking to my guns ;)

Sorry I'm wrong it was Park , getting old memory is going :)

Best September derby at Tynie since the one ten years earlier! Younger fans will struggle to get to grips with this but any Hearts fan who had been through the 70s had zero faith that we could do these *****. Robbo and Jimmy Bone that day ended that shite and started what we now have. In terms of derby victories only bettered in my lifetime by 19.05.12

Kenny Aird now there's a name from the past ! Always remember wee Parkies diving header against Dundee Utd at Tynie ( given my previous failure , I hope to Christ I'm right this time :) ) He had a heart of a lion

Was in tenerife at the time

The guy who had the bar was a jambo from Bonnyrigg. Went in on the Saturday night and was worried to ask the score after watching through the late 60/70s. When he told me we had won. The tide had changed.

Where were you when you finished celebrating though?? Loved those days when a celebration meant that the next time your feet hit the ground you were 50 feet away from where you were before the ba went in!! Happy days!

It seems like yesterday but also another lifetime.

That day goes down a real favourite.

From morning till night.

And Alex Macdonald is imo a real legend.

He truly did bring us back from the brink.

That was a brilliant game, first league derby for many years and set the tone for the all the years onwards. Robbo's first was beautiful. I was in the shed that day. great memories.

So was I, one of my fave Shed memories along with the Bayern Munich game we also won (1-0) on 28th Feb, 1989 - looking at my ticket stub right now  :beatnik2:

When Bone rose he could hang in the air , despite carrying a bit of middle age spread. His distribution from the head was second to none.

I never saw Bauld play, but watching Bone made me realise what my granddad was talking about when he said hanging in the air.i used to practice it down at the figgy park for months afterwards (with little success needless to say)

I'm sure Robby learned a lot off the old guy, what we could do with either or both of them in our team today...

I was in Upper N that day , as a 13 yr old, with my Dad. It must have been mixed though because he remembers there being a young Hibby further down who lost the plot when Robbo equalised the 2nd time. He probably exploded when Jimmy Bone won it for us. Great memories.

Was right behind the goal for the winner, absolute bedlam.

Still not sure if this one or Derek O'Connor's win at Easter Road was the best for me.  Both wins showed we were back and ready to put hibs back in their box.

They facts show that although there were 3 victories in the 16 years from my birth ,given I can only remember 2 (and there had been 29 played in that time) due to my age , that is absolutely horrific reading :(

Probably the reason I still experience anger at any defeat to that shower.

What wee Doddie did for the club must never be forgotten

I think my first derby was at ER and Derek O Connor got a late equaliser. First point we'd got there in a while. Think this game was the next one after that. We went into these games as underdogs. Folk wouldn't credit that these days.
