The old shops thread I started came up with a lot of old record shops. I got my first album in Ards on Junction Street and got me thinking what my first album was. For the life of me I can't remember what it was or where I got it

What was your first single and album

The first single I can remember being mine would be the Smurf Song :D

First album I probably paid for was the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. First 'band' one was probably A-ha's debut.

If I was under oath, Young at Heart by The Bluebells and Reckless by Bryan Adams.

But I like to think my 'real' first were Some Might Say and (What's The Story) Morning Glory.

Oh God.

Ok, Green Door 7" by Shakin' Stevens and Like A Virgin by Madonna on cassette. Both presents though, so hopefully they don't count....

The first 7" I bought with my own money was One by Metallica and the first album was Misplaced Childhood by Marillion.

Actually, that is probably worse...

Can't do My First Single, because the first singles I ever owned were courtesy of a "Win The Top 10" competition run by an ice lolly company (Walls? Lyon's Maid?) in 1969. All you had to do was come up with a band name. I sent in Supercharged Auburn (I was into American classic cars of the 30s at the time) and a few weeks later the postman brought me:-

Get Back

Man of the World

Dizzy

My Way

The Boxer

Come Back and Shake Me

Ballad of John and Yoko

Oh Happy Day

Tracks of My Tears

Time Is Tight

Not a bad top 10, although I don't think I played the Clodagh Rogers more than once.

I was so impressed with my success I put in another entry later that year - can't remember the band name I submitted, but it was in line with the weird and wonderful names around at the time - Pinkerton's Assorted Colours, Frumious Bandersnatch, etc. Lo and behold, another package arrived shortly afterwards, with:-

Something In The Air

In the Ghetto

Honky Tonk Women

Give Peace A Chance

It Miek

Saved By The Bell

Make Me An Island

Baby Make It Soon

That's The Way God Planned It

My Cherie Amour

- apart from Joe Dolan and Robin Gibb, another fine chunk of music.

Sadly neither of my names were ever attached to groups, although I still feel that Supercharged Auburn could have made it big...

I can do My First Album - it was The World Of John Mayall, a cheapo (a penny short of a pound, if my memory serves me well) Decca compilation I got from a antiques / junk shop at the Grange end of Marchmont Road.
