Ok boomer, stop listening to rap on radio 1 and broaden your horizons.

You have no idea what I listen to.

I'm always up for listening to new music and genres.  If your JPEGMAFIA is anything to go by, it's shite.  Exactly what I'm talking about.  The guys are just stoned out their nut thinking they are making the next greatest album, where they are just playing 3 samples or hooks for 3 minutes.

I'm old school, but listen to loads of different styles of music.

4 major musical changes, 3 rap styles and variable tempo.

No offence man, but tbh you obviously have no knowledge of hip hop at all. Exemplified by your claim that modern hip hop is 'autotuned' and anyone who listens to it 'is a mug'. There'll be a few folk on this thread that will dispute that.

Well done for finding a tune I posted on this thread you don't like though.

Exactly what you're talking about... But it's really good? RTJ is modern hip hop, ya know.

As I said earlier, fair enough if you have preferences but don't be a dick that discounts things because they're new.

It's nothing to do with music being new.  Trust me.   I went back on the thread to have a listen to recommended stuff and JPEGMAFIA is exactly what I was talking about.  It sounds like a stoned guy ****ing around with Ableton or FL Studio.

Music is subjective.

More so when you are under the influence.

Which is exactly why most of it sounds like pish.  As per my original comment.

The majority of hip hop/rap is pish because it is created by people off their tits thinking they are creating great music.

Exactly what I stated.  I've written loads of music off my tits, then the next day, I realised it sounded like arse.

So that means everyone that gets stoned and creates music using Ableton is great?

Help me understand the logic here?

Hearts have a first team squad of around 30 players.  All of them are great because they play professional football?

i was 11 when that song was released and for a while I thought that and similar rap, like snow, was the greatest thing ever.
A year later someone gave me a copy of Niggaz4Life by NWA and my life was changed.

Been listening to Deltron 3030, Souls of Mischief and MF Doom a lot recently.

Also rediscovered The College Dropout. For all Kanye West is f-ing mental, that album is a masterpiece.

@Riddley Walker

If you don't have Ben Carson on vinyl, there are represses on his website right now. Not sure that there are any left but OG copies are going for $250 US.

The new pressing is on 3 records as well so it should be less compressed and sound better.

Not that new but this year...Freddie Gibbs/Curren$y/Alchemist with Fetti album (the original track is one on my favourites of the last ten years). Alchemist and Conway The Machine’s 14KIs is decent, RTJ4 is alright. Alchemist been doing loads of great mixes from his house during lockdown.

The Freddie Gibbs Alchemist album Alfredo is great. Griselda are having an amazing year. Westside Gunn drooped 2 albums. The first one is the best. Both Conway the machine albums are great and the latest Benny the Butcher album.

Cheers. Don't have vinyl, just stream stuff.

JPEG has got to be one of the most unique producers around, so varied as well. Love Black Ben Carson album, folk usually miss that out but it's fantastic IMO.

He also released a bunch of singles earlier this year which have a different style than the album last year. Some amazing tunes in there.

Good shouts above for the Denzel Curry stuff too. I'm hoping there's a new Vince Staples album out soon, although wasn't a massive fan of the EP from couple years ago.

Respek BA is still doing the odd battle from that era, although not in a couple of years. I'd lost a lot of interest after Don't Flop went to shit a few years ago but I've been watching the KOTD tournament every Sunday for the last couple of months. Last 32 knockout tournament live on Twitch, 3 or 4 battles every week. It's nearly at the end of last 16 stage and been really good so far.

Re all the stuff about musicians being stoned out their tits when they are making stuff it’s all bullshit. A lot of is myth making by the artists but it’s mostly people having a nice level they can still operate at but relaxed enough to bring ideas out. Louis Armstrong was a big smoker, a huge amount of the jazz players in the 50’s were heroin addicts, then all the acid, cocaine, and heroin years since the 60’s. Incredibly complex technically brilliant music wasn’t made by people out their box. Duke Ellington always said he’d employ stoners before drunks for his band as they turned up on time and didn’t forget the notes.

I may be completely wrong but i don't think @Lovecraft was talking about rappers smoking up.

I think he was probably talking about soundcloud / mumble rap and the prevalence of xanax, lean, oxys etc that seems to go along with that sort of scene. XXX, Zan, Peep, Yachty, lil uzi vert  etc all seem to be obsessed with that shit and they make dismal emo-pop rap with shitty lofi weak production and autotune.

Have to say, I really hate that sort of music and it's a complete and utter embarrassment to hiphop in general. It's more emo than hiphop but it does have it's fans.

Autotune just sounds shit. It grates on me. Got a few things with Future on them and he uses Autotune a bit but that's about it.

Is that what you were on about? The synthetic opiate, tranq and codeine shit that's popular right now?

Think you're giving him too much credit Cosa. Don't think he likes hip hop and was just venting shit. I'd put money on him knowing nothing about that scene you mentioned.

Agree with everything you say about the mumble rap scene though, embarrassingly bad.

What do you make of Earl Sweatshirt these days? Loved his first mixtape and OF stuff but his last couple of albums are completely unlistenable.

I detest that weak, scratchy production and lack of any structure or hooks and stupid 1 minute songs. Just lazy, weak music.

I totally agree with this about his last project from 2019. Only liked one song from it and most of it was really poor. Apart from the bad production his rapping style was also totally innaccesible, barely any rhythm to it at all.

But I did really like Some Rap Songs from 2018. Loved the way he used the looped vocal samples and some of the wordplay was incredible. I know it divided opinion though and agree about the 1 minute songs. There's one in particular on Some Rap Songs, Loosie, that's an absolute banger, really weird distorted guitar bass line, excellent rapping, but it cuts off after less than a minute. Frustrating.

Will be interested to see where he goes next, all of his albums have been so different from each other. But yeah, not that confident about his next one after Feet of Clay.

Wish he'd just do an album with RZA, Madlib, El-P, Clams Casino, Alchemist or a proper producer and get back to making music that's entertaining and worth listening to.

He's talented but he's not using it.

Yeah.  You were giving me far too much credit I'm afraid.  🙂  I don't really go looking specifically for hip hip. I usually just randomise stuff on Spotify when I'm trying to find new stuff.

Loads of the stuff I hear just sounds like drivel to me.  Again, I don't go searching for new stuff to listen to, I'm talking about in the broad "Main Stream"  or popular stuff.    It just sounds like guff to me.    Monotonous monosyllabic trash, with one or 2 loops on repeat and the "rappers"  thinking they are greatest thing ever to happen to music.  Granted there is always gonna be decent music in pretty much any genre, even if you don't appreciate it yourself.

Rap/hip hip is just one of the easiest for folk off their faces ****ing around with a DAW thinking they are making ground breaking music, as you don't actually need to be able to play an instrument to create music, or attempt to.  For every Massive Attack, there are thousands of stoned people creating utter shite.

🙂

Remember that music overall is subjective.  That's what makes it so good.

Absolutely love Flower Boy and Igor is okay. Flower Boy was one of the best LPs of that year. Listened to it in my car for a few months solid and then the record when I got home some days. Groundbreaking for him.

Igor felt different in that it's not exactly hiphop for much of it. Not much vocal content but i do like his production and twee, 80s soundtrack sort of beats. Guy is talented but he's been inconsistent before Flower Boy.

Kind of where I'm at. Can't quite get into Igor. I'm not always a fan of his tweeness but having said that I love an awful lot of his back catalogue. Still a part of me that misses the dirtiness of that early OF stuff.

Flower Boy is an absolutely brilliant album. Like you, I had it on all the time when it came out. Igor’s alright but I loved ******* and Goblin. Saw Odd Future in Glasgow years ago and you could tell when Tyler was on the mic - he was head and shoulders above the rest. He’s got a ton of talent.
