My 14 y.o quite in to rap/hip hop at the moment.

What are some of the classic, old school albums he should be listening to to educate himself?

My daughter has now got me listening t rap. I suppose it's a trade for me getting her into rock and metal.

Really like A J Tracey and aitch. There's a few others but I struggle to remember their names.

All my mates think it's another part of a midlife crisis.

Shameless bump.

Spent my afternoon 'working', by listening to Speakerboxx/The Love Below, and Voyager by The Jet Age of Tomorrow. What an album the latter is BTW.

Ha, I listened to Speakerboxx/The Love Below for the first time in at least a decade a couple of weeks ago. Not as good as their earlier stuff IMO but still some crackers.

The Jet Age of Tomorrow have come up on my Spotify a lot but never listened to them, will give it a shot.

I've been listening to Danny Brown, MF Doom( and his aliases) and Scallops Hotel a lot the last couple of weeks.

Granted it's a bit hit and miss, but really opened the door I think for a lot of experimental hip hop.

Definitely listen to The Jet Age of Tomorrow. A lot of their stuff is instrumentals, a number of which were turned down by the likes of Tyler and Kendrick. Don't let that detract from anything though. If you like alternative stuff, they're a great listen. Voyage I believe was their first album, I highly recommend it.

Had a quick listen earlier on, good on the first run through.

Yeah, think I prefer the production on this to RTJ3 after a couple of quick listens.

Beastie Boys. De La Soul and that's about it for me. I got a Ministry of Sound classic rap CD and it's got pretty much all the old skool singles on from NWA to Missy Elliot. Great for the car

Салатные палочки

Bit of a long-shot here probably.

I am looking for the name of a British rapper who had a song in or around 2006 called "My Round" or "This is My Round".  It was a really upbeat tune that is stuck in my head this morning but the only lyrics I can remember are "this is my round".  The rapper was called "something 'P'" or 'T'.  I can't find it anywhere on google no matter what I try.

Jamie T was quite big around that time. Could be something by him?

The annoying thing was Jamie T and Toddla T kept creeping into my head but this guy was definitely black.

Found it.  Christ knows how I remembered it.  I was sitting going through the alphabet in my head.

Doesn't seem to have made it very big and there's little about him online.

Dunno if he's been mentioned much on this thread, but I've been listening to a lot of Mick Jenkins recently. Namely, anything that he collaborates with Kaytranada on. Check out 'Frontstreet' and 'Rain'.

Yeah, I listened to him loads a few years ago but haven't recently. Really like his style, thanks for reminding me.

Check out Billy Woods if you haven't already. His last album, Hiding Places, with Kenny Segal, is amazing.

Not that new but this year...Freddie Gibbs/Curren$y/Alchemist with Fetti album (the original track is one on my favourites of the last ten years). Alchemist and Conway The Machine’s 14KIs is decent, RTJ4 is alright. Alchemist been doing loads of great mixes from his house during lockdown.

Cheers. Saw Freddie Gibbs had done one with the Alchemist. Have tried Freddie a few times in the past and has never grabbed me, but Alchemist rarely misses so will give this a blast.

The majority of hiphop/rap nowadays is genuinely ****ing awful.  Most of them are just too out their faces to not actually realise the "music" they are putting out is crap.  Add in autotune, or the only one style they have of rapping and it's all just guff n fluff.

Loads of mugs still lap it up though.

Yelawolf - Love Story is a good album for those who would like to listen to something new that still sounds somewhat old school. For (Really) Old School I would say Big Youth - Screaming Target or anything by U-Roy or King Stitt.

Aw man it's so good. Usually hip hop songs that hit the mainstream don't quite hit the mark but Ms. Jackson is and will always be an incredible tune.

One of the songs that soundtracked my childhood. Never knew what it meant, would usually spend the whole time muttering, joining in only to let out a horrendously out of tune “I am fo reeeeeeeeaaaalllllll” every now and again

For those that don't really **** with modern hip hop generally and miss the boom bap production, you should check out Czarface. Outstanding 90s-esque hip hop supergroup who've released 5 or 6 albums in the past 5 years or so. Last one with MF Doom. Proper old school with a few modern twists.

Edit: just looked again. Last collab was actually with Ghostface. And they've released two albums since then. 9 albums in 7 years, scary prolific.

Recently bought

RTJ4

Yugen Blakrok - Anime Mysterium

Nas - God's Son RSD 2020 version

Esoteric v Japan

2 x Buze Brovaz LPs

The Jazz is Dead series parts 1-3 by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed from ATCQ but they're more jazz than hiphop.

Various Benny the Butcher and Smoke DZA records. Loving their stuff right now.

Revenge of the Truence - H1N1

Howie Lee - 7 weapons

Felt 3 - Rosie Perez (This is Slug, Murs and Aesop Rock - really, really good)

Doomshop Records - Judgement Day (weird horrorcore dark rap label compilation)

Judgement Night OST - Shitty film but an absolute killer of a soundtrack.

2 x Clams Casino LPs

Those are all off the top of my head. Bought tons more but can't remember them all.

Also, probably controversial but I prefer Stillmatic to Illmatic. Just more memorable tunes and much slicker production. The first 5 or 6 Nas albums are all great tbh.

Cheers cosa, some good stuff to check out there.

Clams Casino is an incredible producer, his instrumentals non hip hop album is one of my favourites recently.
