A former techy teacher (and then colleague) ofmine told me he helped coach the rugby team when Dave Bowman used to play when he wasn't supposed to.

Mr Alan Rorie, a wee, round, hairy Orcadian. Great guy. Passed on a year or two back.

Remember Mr Rorie. Seemed like a good guy and a decent teacher. Socialist iirc and I think helped run the Film Club. Put forward US docu film Harlan County USA (when I was there) a huge letdown after Barbarella . Where were you colleaugues  ?

His rugby coaching was limited I think.  Porty had a more than decent set up - considering Jim Telfer was coaching before his Lions days, and he was No 2 to the legendary Mr Cuthbertson .

Probably more just a case of him being there rather than any full scale hands-on coaching. I'd imagine he'd've played a bit of rugby in Orkney - never actually asked him!

I'm of an age with Robbo and Dave B and can remember him at Anderson High in Lerwick from about my S3/4 onwards so DB playing rugby would've been S1/2 age group - roughly.

He remained at AHS for the remainder of his teaching days - I joined there in 2003.

Ha..Mr Rorie must have left Porty to head home to  Orkney/Shetland whilst I was there. DB was S1/2 a few years behind me , so we're of a similar vintage.

I do remember him saying he played rugby. Prop or hooker you'll not be surprised to hear.

He'd aye say Orkney was home but he must've had the thick end of 40-odd years in Shetland :D

When I was there the School team was incredible (Alex Preston - played for Scotland Bs, and Stuart Graham - Heriots ) and slaughtered everyone they played. The snobby schools wouldn't play them in case they got beat and made Porty play their B teams which they slaughtered by 3 figure scores. .

Only chance to meet them was at the end of the year in the Edinburgh School 7s and theyPorty won it - first comprehensive to do so I think. There was some footage upon the net somewhere of the game

Hated Cubby though - he belted me for an attempt to spend all day in the lotus position - I was being carried in the full lotus by a rugby playing mate of mine Norman  - Cubby stopped us in the corridor and took us to his room.

What sports do you play?

Norman - Rugby

Me  -  er chess>...?

Guess who go 6 of the best and guess who got let off....!

 Nowadays you'd just hack a Tik-Tok of it onto the school website...

The rugby team got even better after you left Scott.  The private schools avoided Porty, not becasue they thought they'd lose, but because they thought Porty weren't good enough. That changed in the early 80's and we often beat Heriots/Watsons and supplied a good few Scotland U-21's (there's a couple each side of Gavin Hastings, in his autobiography pic -  when he captained that side) .  Also when Scotland schools beat England schools in 1980 - it wasn't David Sole or Gavin Hastings that caught the eye - it was an old mate from Porty , who ran the show.

This , and Porty FPs mereoric rise through the District League, to the cusp of Div 1  - in 8 consecutive seasons  - was down to Cubby.

Not the best teacher, but a coach ahead of his time.

I’m sure they missed a very late penalty to go up to division 1 but could be the mists of time playing tricks.

I was at that game , don't remember it being as close, but could be wrong.

Edin Accies at Raeburn iirc - Porty missed a few penalties, Accies won & got promoted - 42 yrs ago :(

Me and Big Bens son Stephen (Main) got beaten up by about 30 of the Porty Rebels outside the police station coming out of the pub at the Bath street crossroads one Friday  night. Stephen’s last words to me after  I suggested we run for it were “Don’t worry, my dad takes the Youth Club”

Game was at Duddingston as I recall. Was there as well. Late kick from a very kickable position to left of posts facing the clubhouse, and that was that. Lost Russell McIntyre (now passed) to Heriots shortly after and the chance was lost. May have missed some details through the advent of time..

Your memory's better than mine 👍

Russell's one of the Porty U-21 Internationists, standing beside G.Hastings in the photo mentioned above. Short career at Heriots thro injury, fantastic player.

At least two British Lions at his funeral.

I asked a pal of mine who was at the game and also played for the FPs a few years later (we were only 12/13 at the time of the game in question). He's informed me of the following:

- Against Edinburgh Accies at Cavalry Park in May 1983

- Promotion decider

- Crowd estimated at 2,000

- First home defeat in that run of 6 promotions

- Score was 8-10 to Accies

The guy who missed the penalty was Grant McCall who I kind of know as I used to be quite pally with his younger brother.

I am sure it was Wally Bruce who missed the kick. Grant was a bit younger and whilst a very good player  unlikely to have played. Good Hearts man as well so may be on here to tell us himself
