Fermit the Krog
The jet Stream has moved What does that mean? I'm sick of this shite. Would prefer wet and windy mild air from the Atlantic to this. FFS we're meant to be feeling a bit warmth from the sun at this time of year when rolling Easter eggs down hills, not building fecking snowmen. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Guest GhostHunter
For those of us who are old enough - this is the exact same kind of winter weather we used to get in the 70's and 80's. In fact, it was worse back then come Easter time... MTFU

FFS we're meant to be feeling a bit warmth from the sun at this time of year when rolling Easter eggs down hills, not building fecking snowmen. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. It means the winds in the upper atmosphere which usually bring the heat + the wind and rain are further south... So we are getting arctic air from Russia and Scandinavia ... The good news is if it last till summer it should be great... The bad news is it probably won't so one more month of freezing then we can look forward to wind and rain

maroonlegions
I was reading an article the other day which was explaining the reduction in sea ice is responsible for pushing the jet stream south which in turns allows the development of anti-cyclones, anti-cyclones are rare for the UK and now 3 out of the last 4 winters have been dominated by them... The jet stream is currently sitting around France which is a record latitude so the current weather will persist for the foreseeable... The thing is, we should all be keeping our fingers crossed that it stays that way, if it does stay that way this summer will be more akin to a Canadian or Scandinavian summer, clear skies and mid 20's as the easterly wind will drag in warm air from the continent as opposed to the cold stuff we are experiencing now... If the Gulf Stream moves north again that's when it will get wet and windy... I know what is prefer.. Snowy winters, Sunny summers , sounds like a plan. Yes there is some scientific data showing that the "gulf stream oscillations" have gradually weakened over the years ,while there is no panic, these oscillations are vital to Europe maintaining a warm climate. If these oscillations were ever to completely stop then that would be a entirely different ball game. Impacts of the Gulf Stream; quote; "Because ocean currents circulate water of different temperatures all over the globe, they often have a significant impact on the world?s climate and weather patterns. The Gulf Stream is one of the most important currents in this regard since it gathers all of its water from the warm tropical waters of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. As such, it keeps sea surface temperatures warm, causing the areas around it to be warm and more hospitable. Florida and much of the Southeastern United States for instance is mild all year round". "The greatest impact the Gulf Stream has on climate is found in Europe. Since it flows into the North Atlantic Current, it too is warmed (though at this latitude the sea surface temperatures are cooled considerably), and it is believed that it helps keep places like Ireland and England much warmer than they would otherwise be at such a high latitude. For example, the average low in London in December is 42?F (5?C) while in St. John?s, Newfoundland, the average is 27?F (-3?C). The Gulf Stream and its warm winds are also responsible for keeping northern Norway?s coast free of ice and snow." "Recently, there has been evidence that the Gulf Stream is weakening and slowing and there is growing concern about what impacts such a change would have on the world?s climate. Some reports suggest that without the Gulf Stream, temperatures in England and northwestern Europe could drop by 4-6?C." link; http://geography.abo.../gulfstream.htm NASAs "oceanographic" watch on the "Gulf Stream" or the "oscillations" is one that needs to be kept an eye on,if as current data has suggested that these vital oscillations have weakened then its a big say on our and Europe's weather patterns. one for the geeks below; A web-based ocean current reference site. Each current has important links, summary text detailing velocity and hydrographic observations, and plots such as, average current speed and locations, drifting buoy positions, sea surface temperature maps, and HYCOM simulations.; link; http://oceancurrents....edu/index.html

CJGJ
Firefighters have been tackling a series of large wildfires across the Highlands. The most serious blaze was at Strontian on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, where flames two miles across were encroaching on the village. Crews have also been battling wildfires in many other areas, including Lewis, Skye, Mallaig and Glenelg. A spokesman for Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue told the BBC much of the region was "tinder dry". Weather in this country is just so unpredictable.. tinder dry in a long cold winter spell !! Snake Plissken
It's currently a mild 15 degrees. It was -10 at the start of the month, the winters and summers are very long and extreme but the spring and autumns are short and nice. April-early June is the nice time of year where the weather is pleasant, that gives way to a long summer of intense, soul-draining heat which lasts until October.
