What boys / school team did you play for and when?

Recommended Posts

BarneyBattles

Was just thinking, there must be folk on here who played with / against each other when they were kids.

What was your playing CV?

Mine was:

- Easthouses Boys club (around 77 to 83).

- Langlaw primary and Newbattle High (around 78-83).

- Porty High (83-86) - great team, included Alan Banks (played for Meadowbank/Alloa and a few others) and Willie Miller (Hibs right back fi Bingham). We were

undefeated in the league for a couple of years and got to the Scottish cup semis etc. Miller was probably the weakest link in our defence but definitely had the most

drive and commitment - e.g. he regularly shunned a slug of the pre-match can of lager on the bus up from porty high to calvary park playing fields - pussy.

- United Crossroads 83-86.

- 86 onwards, mainly maybury league followed by bevvy, fags and birds?

Anyone a peer of mine?

Funnily enough, I was thinking about initiating a thread along similar lines, just the other day, but I'm not a "thread starter" by nature. Nae dates, but! :ninja:

Darroch Secondary. We won the cup and finished second in the league, one particular year, if I remember. We also played in green and gold hoops with white shorts. :yucky:

I went to my primary school trials but did not get picked, despite scoring two goals. Admittedly one was an o.g.

Some boy who did not even bother about football turned up with rugby boots and he did get picked. Do not think he got ever picked for games though.

Was it with Mr Gillespie, Mr Ramsay or Mr Taylor?

Played for them in 1984-1986 but it was after the teachers strike so it was really badly organised.

Was the goalie for Preston Street School 1945/and 1946. All home games at Warriston. Saved a penalty at Meggetland in some Cup game. Wanted to advance to Jimmy Clarks, parents insisted on Boroughmuir.

Got a game with classmates from school with I think it was 13 BB, the hall was in old Corstorphine village. Bill Duff joined us occasionally, so did Alastair Hood. Bill played centre half, he was already playing for a juvenile team.

Then rapid promotion to St Peters Boys Club, Lutton Place, Lothian Amateurs.

That was it for boys soccer, next team was adults in the army.

Nah, Banksy was in my year, was quite good pals with him and still in contact today through work. He was inside left, I was outside left in our porty team.

Felly was a year or two above me. Keith Douglas (nickname moog) was in our team although a year above me, also played for salveson bc - he was the standout in the team, a very clever (and big) centre forward. Was training with hibs as a 16 yo but got hit by a car one morning and cabbaged his knee. Career over.

Always good to hear your tales bob, talking about playing for the services, my grandad played for the navy during the war. He was only a nipper, volunteered aged 17 in 1943 and was one of my best pals - although as a nipper I never could work out how they played 11 a side on a ship!

Alva Academy Me and my mate was the only 2 allowed to play football in the 2nd year while the rest had to play rugby 1st and second years.Made my debut in a 3-2 win over John Colquhoun and John Phillibans St Modans.(stirling)The reason I remember the score,Alva was getting beat 2-0 at half time and me and China were put on as subs and well, any body got a trumphet,I've worn mine out.laugh.gif

Stirling Boys Club under 14s

Grangemouth Bowhouse under 16

Fishcross Heatherbell then Gowanhill (The Raploch) under 18s When I played for Gowanhill,I saw fear for the first time in the other teams eyes. Not that we were all that good,it was just that everyone besides me was,no joking,NUTS.

I did play against Gary Gillespie when he played for Gairdoch and wee Frankie Cole (Sauchie Juveniles) who went on to play for Leicester City.

Was asked to go to Vale of Leven but couldn't be gassed due to the fact I was always gassed.sad.gif

Played for:

Boghall Primary (P6-P7, 1992-1994)

Played alongside Keigan Parker. He was named after Kevin Keegan. When I went to Boghall Primary, he was known as "Keignar Pie" and couldn't spell his own name.

Bathgate Academy (first year, 1994-95)

Boghall Boys' Club (later Boghall Aces, 1992-c.1996)

Played alongside Richard Brittain, an utter prick.

Blackburn Boys' Club

Broxburn Boys' Club

Played mostly as a forward, also right wing and centre half, though my best position has always been goalkeeper.

So did I - it was Bob Martin the Maths teacher, then Colin Taylor, and the Dizzy Gillespie.

I played for Langlaw Boys Club, Easthouses Boys Club, and then...

PANDA YOUTH CLUB! :woot:

My word, we were terrible, and I wasn't great, let me tell you.

The best players I played against were Gordon McLeod, Alan Redpath, Eddie May, and Scott Nisbet - the latter 'Nizzer' was a class above.

Never knew that about Moog. Him & Felly were in quite a few of my classes at school. Your right though Moog was a great player. There was a photo on facebook recently with a photo of the teams your talking about. If youve not seen it look it up. Im sure Banksy is tagged in it so it will probably be on his profile page.

Miss Smith at porty was tidy in a quiet girl next door way - Miss Hamilton used to sit in the gym putting lipstick on whilst wearing very shot skirts and flirting outrageously. Miss Sloman our music teacher was an ex Benny Hill's angel and page 3 dolly bird - a proper sun-stunna!
