Your first car

My first car was a black Nissan Micra (1992ish model):

got it for about ?100 from the wee garage down the road and it was great for a couple of months until 2nd gear stopped working entirely. Couldn't afford to get it fixed so persevered without it.

Roundabouts were interesting back then. Either slow right down and do it in 1st or keep the speed up and fly round in 3rd!

A Scimitar, more boxy than the one in the photo, got it for nowt from a mate, it had no brakes, so I used it as part x, and got a Chrysler Alpine Estate, which is the first car I bought.

One of the best handling cars I've ever owned. And broke down often enough that I became quite handy at home mechanics. Of course I put on a steering wheel about the size of a saucer.

What about the Vanden Plas Princess? You have to love a car with picnic tables in the back.

Ah, and you wonder why the British car industry disappeared. :P

No coincidence it all went wrong when picnic tables vanished off the options list. And of course built in heated rear windows. What was wrong with the stick on ones from Halfords?

Bought for ?250.00. She lasted 2 years and over 30,000 miles before the gearbox went on Gorgie road at about 2:00pm on a Saturday. Just in time to roll her round the corner and head of to the match. Great car

But in Maroon

It was a wee 1.25L go-kart. Fantastic wee car. Traded it in after a couple of years because I had pretty much destroyed the engine....my excuse was it had no rev counter so I couldn't be sure where the red line was! :woot:

Just bought my 4th car last month!

Some people seem to have pretty decent motors for their first car.

I wasn't allowed to buy a decent car until I had some more experience of driving under my belt. :sob:

A red J reg Cavalier 1.4, bought off some guy at Sighthill. It had a liking for being pushed at roundabouts and round the corner at junctions. By far the comfiest car I've had though, but then the roads were no doubt a lot better then.

A red-faded-pink Fiat Uno. 0.9l, had checked blue and yellow seats that evoked picnic hampers. It was 15+ years old but had only done 12,000 miles.

Unfortunately that worked against it, the years of relaxation caused it to develop a rusted sub-frame, failing its first MOT.

At the time, it was a shocker of a car, but even then I loved it and polished it up all the time, would quite happily swap my current car for it.

2 days tax and three days MOT iirc and a introduction to home mechanics and bodgeineering!

My first car in 87 was an old blue mini with the wooden interior. A great wee car to learn in but not much room in the back :whistling:

Paid ?150 for it and sold it a few months after i passed my test for ?200 and bought another mini wiht bucket seats, alloys, tinted windows and a mighty 1.25cc engine. That was a flying machine until the pistons blew :ninja:

I loved my minis - saw one last week and I doubt my fat ass would fit in the door now
