Say What Again

Based on things like career length, superstardom, No.1s and earnings, I suppose it would have to be Madonna.

If you're just asking who folks favourites are, then based purely on their voices, I'll go for Karen Carpenter or Joni Mitchell.

Dusty Springfield, Kate Bush, Agnetha Faltskog, Nina Persson, Tori Amos.

Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw, Annie Lennox, Elizabeth Fraser, Kate Bush and Alison Moyet are just a number of Brits, just of the top of my head, that are better than Christina. That's without getting started on the Americans in the 60's.

On Christina though I would GHP.

Yep. Voices. Was forced to watch the X factor at the weekend :whistling: and noticed how thin the singing quality was in the Females. Christina Augilera is total class. Madonna never did it for me over the years. Agree with Karen Carpenter though

Aretha is just head and shoulders above all else.

Christina is way better than she has any right to be though, have a look at the Lady Marmalade video (never a bad idea), her vocals are very strong and she puts her contemporaries firmly in the shade. Pink is weak next to her, Mya's voice is reedy and L'il Kim doesn't even try to sing, she knows she can't.

In recent years Amy Winehouse was amazing, but alas we'll only have one truly great album from her. A huge talent ruined.

Sandy Denny ,janis Joplin , Joan Baez , Judy Collins depends on what type of singing you prefer a lot of great Blues and jazz female singers also ,

I personally would go for Sandy Denny as my favorite female voice

The Treasurer

Would agree with a few choices on here (Aretha, Dusty etc) but for pure vocal range it has to be Cyndi Lauper.

Aretha edges it over Billie Holliday for me Karen Carpenter would be the only white woman in my top ten .

Agreed, Karen Carpenter has totally got it, as does Sabrina Salerno, who would totally get it. B)

Obvious shouts gone (Aretha, Dusty, Beth Gibbons) for the most part. I'd add Bjork, Etta James, Isobel Campbell, Martha Reeves, Ella Fitzgerald and Julie London into the mix as well.

If you listen to any female singers, make it Irma Thomas. Absolute legend. Following on from that you could try the two Bettys, Swann and Lavette.

Regina Spektor.

I love Regina, she is my current favourite artist, I listen to her pretty much every day, but her strength is not vocal. She is a brilliant song writer and musician, she's original and fresh, but purely on vocals, Nah, I don't get it.

No one has mentioned Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs. One of my favourites.

Alison Moyet has one solitary vote...I'm making that two.

As an aside, I had a friend from Bo'ness who got off with Liz Frazer one night when we were drinking in Linlithgow. Her partner in crime Robin Guthrie got wind of the fact and threatened to have my mate shot.

Don't know if he would have....but my mate never went near Liz again.
