By the time I got to the bog in the Heavenly the last thing on my mind was trap doors!

Did you know Gordon that managed the place Gabriel?

Used to chat away to all the staff in there, as I was never out of the place. My memory is garbage though bud, especially names. I can't believe nobody got seriously injured in there though, as they used to leave the door on the floor for the cellar open all the time.

Bet I was in there the same time as you at least one night.

We lived in Morningside for 26 years and my dear mum lived in Falcon House until she died. We loved the Heavenly.

Now it's a feckin Dominos.

I stayed on Morningside road right beside it for about 4 years. Straight up to the Heavenly after leaving the Angle Club.

The trap door was just as you went in the door right?

For some reason, last night I pictured it in the toilets at the back. My wife put me straight this morning. If you'll pardon the expression.

Me and Nastro Azurro

Your getting confused with the secret door to the casino in the back  One day you'll remember that your wife is always right  Will be hitting the Nastro Azurro tonight myself, got to try and stay away from here though. Not wanting to have to come on here apologising for drunken posts

Tried this question about two years ago with no joy so will try again tonight:

Can anyone remember a place in either Hanover Street or Frederick Street (between George and Queen St) around 1980/81 which was (I think) black and white checked outside, food was burgers, hickory ribs, chicken wings etc. We used to get handed vouchers in the street which gave you 'buy one meal get the second free' on Thursday nights. The decor was also black and white.

The name of this place has been bugging us for years!

Penguin Cafe ?

Penguin Cafe ?

Nope, but thanks anyway.

Think the Penguin was between Rose Street and George Street on Frederick or Castle.

Wife thinks the one we are after was down from the Beau Brummell towards Queen Street.

No idea.

Think it was opposite the Patio Italian place but not too sure!

Sorry to be so vague.

Her latest suggestion is it might have been where the clothes shop called Bus Stop was. Just up from Milnes bar.

This is driving us mad!

Appreciate your help General :thumb:

I was going to suggest Fingers Piano Bar but that wasn't near Milnes.

This is bugging me now.

Glad you're bugged too!

The Milnes thing might be a red herring of course. My wife has the memory of a gnat.

I personally think it was near the Indian restaurant called Ballis. I don't even know if that place is still there.

This is murder!

While we're here though. There was a downstairs (a lot of stairs) bar next to the Beau Brummell (to its left) that we can't remember the name of either. It was buy one get on free on a Friday evening. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Quoting myself now.

Re the diner type place:

Wife now thinks it was on Frederick Street between Rose and George Street and that the doorway was on an angle. Everything, she says, was black and white.

Morgan - you've given several possible locations for this place - give us a chance?

I know!

Sorry.

We just can't quite remember exactly where it was.

Wife says definitely Frederick Street. Going up towards George Street on the right hand side. Angled doorway. Buy one get one vouchers. Black and white deco.

Sometime between 1980 and 1983/84.

Best I can do Stuart.

If I knew any more I would probably know the name of the damn place!

Thanks again.

ps Can you believe it was one year ago to the very day [20 February 2016] that you tried to help me with this before?

Doing my head in now, lost count of how many old photos and web pages I've looked at/read now. Even been looking at property sales websites to see if they listed anything to do with its previous history. Don't even know exactly which part of Frederick Street exactly that I should be looking. :ahhhhhhh:

Right.

We've been talking about this again today.

It was definitely Frederick or Hanover.

Wife is adamant it was in the section between Rose Street and George Street. Although I think she is probably right, I have a wee niggle it was the section between George Street and Queen Street. No doubt at all it was on the right hand side going up from Princes Street.

The food was ribs, chicken wings, maybe steaks, coleslaw etc. - sort of American diner style food. She thinks an American type name [brooklyns, that sort of thing]. I veer towards a shorter one word name like Aztecs?

Decor was definitely black and white. Entrance was a wee step up then the door was at an angle. When we were in Edinburgh in January we had a look at all the places in the aforementioned streets. We definitely saw one place that had an angled doorway but can't remember which street it was on. Helpful I know!

Really appreciate your help with this. You really need to start interrogating your passengers if they look of a certain age!

You, the General and Stuart are our only tenuous hopes of remaining sane.

As Chris Tarrant used to say 'no feckin pressure then"!

Go to it.

Morgan - that's really disappointing! I thought I had cracked it with the aid of a third party.

Sorry Stuart.

Really appreciate your help.

As I said to Mr Batistuta, we think the name may be sort of American but can't be sure.

Whoever comes up with the name is definitely good for a few pints!

Fond memories of Tiff's. Saw in my 16th there (still amazed we got in) back in 79. Also saw Dexy's play a cracking set there in 80 when Geno was riding high in the charts.

Kenny Mak's daughter Melody Mak sadly died in a car crash back in about 1990 with others in the car from Broughton High School.  She'd just passed her test too.

I remember that one. It was on Queensferry Road - powerful BMW or Mercedes ... at the junction with Craigleith something ...

Not sure if it's the same incident, but there was a car which was rushing to watch a game in the World Cup, which crashed and was engulfed in flames at that junction.

Right Morgan this has been bugging me so much that saddo that I am I've just been down to the Edinburgh Room at Central Library on George IV Bridge. I had hoped to view some Post Office Street Directories for the early 1980s but sadly they only have copies up to 1975. The very helpful assistant did say they had BT yellow pages for the period. I looked at Cafes/Diners (none) and Restaurants in Frederick & Hanover Streets in the YPs for 1979,1980, 1982 and 1983. The only restaurant that I found that perhaps fits the bill was the Allegro at Hanover St at an address it shared with the Three Tuns. The YP entry is shown in the attached photo

post-586-0-30378700-1487765566_thumb.jpg

This was in all but one of the YPs looked at i.e. 1983 so it may have had a short lifespan which is not uncommon in that line of business.

Naturally if it shared the address with the Three Tuns it may very well have had an angled seperate entrance but I have no evidence that it did.

The other problem is that not all restaurants etc were listed in the YPs!

So does the Allegro ring any bells? I hope so.

I'm so embarrassed that you've gone to all this trouble Stuart that I was tempted to say 'yes, that's it'!.

But it isn't.

Sorry again.

If it wasn't for the fact that both my wife and I remember it and were there together many times I would, by now, be thinking the whole thing was a figment of my imagination.

This feckin place existed for sure.

Thanks again Stuart.

Stuart, we are 90% sold on this!

It all fits in - my wife thought it was an American name (Brooklyn she said), the area is spot on and, if it was around 1980-1983 then that's it!

Thank you so much Stuart!

Thank you so much Stuart!

So good I said it twice!!

Really appreciate that.
