Message from the Chief Executive

It is with much embarrassment that we have to advise that during last night’s Betfred Cup group stage match away to Cove Rangers, Hearts inadvertently fielded an ineligible player.

Due to an administrative error on the club’s part at the end of the January transfer window, Andrew Irving entered the field of play in the 65th minute as an unregistered player. Andrew was given an extension contract in January, 2018 and his extension paperwork was all properly completed and in order. However, it was not loaded onto the online SFA registration system at the time.  His official registration, therefore, ran out on 9th June, 2018.  Unfortunately, this was not picked up in advance of last night’s game.

While stringent processes are already in place to try to prevent something of this nature occurring, clearly mistakes can happen.  An additional step in our internal procedures will be implemented immediately to try to ensure this cannot happen again.

The club would like to apologise to its supporters, to Cove Rangers Football Club and to the footballing authorities for this inadvertent breach of the rules.

A hearing with an SPFL panel has been scheduled for Monday, July 23rd and will be attended by representatives of the club, where sanctions against Hearts will be determined. Until then, no further comment will be made.

Any precident for likely outcomes?

Points lost from match?

Somebody needs their arse booted if it results in expulsion from the cup.

Silly mistake. We take out punishment, someone  gets reprimanded, we learn, we move on.

Lets not lose our heads over it.

Well now we know we need 3 wins to qualify

It is poor but despite the fact it was a minor infringement the rules were broken and the punishment will be the same as happened to other clubs

Of course we can always agree to a replay

Likely awarded as a 3-0 to Cove.

I doubt it would result in expulsion. That would be a bit drastic. More likely 3 points to Cove and a 3 - 0 score to them?

Won't be the first or last time this happens to us or another club. Take the punishment and move on.

I agree let’s not lose our heads but we only get two realistic shots at silverware a season and someone’s inability to do their job could deprive us of one before we even get out of July.  I think we have the right to be angry

They need to work out why at a club the size of ours, such a mistake could  happen, could cost us a cup final.

With tickets sold for all upcoming games you would hope expulsion is not on the table. However it must be one of the possible options. Utter shambles from the club here, only plus point is that we are ahead of the game in the club statement league early doors!!

That’s embarrassing. For those that know more about this kind of thing is it pretty much guaranteed 3 points too cove?

3-0 defeat coming up.

Yep.

Mistakes DONT HAPPEN at this level.  Just like last year someone forgot to order fecking seats. Quite incredible this wasn’t checked.  Levein would be getting it tight had we had actually lost last night, the person or people who ****ed this up should be given a written warning at the least.

The club wouldnae like to apologise to the support who turned up or the support in general though.  Shambles.

Can even happen to the biggest clubs. Real Madrid were kicked out of the Copa Del Rey a few years back for fielding an ineligible player.

I am expecting 3-0 win to Cove awarded but hope that a first time defence and that the player was already on our books means its just a fine.

Folk going for the ‘oh well, it’s one of these mistakes approach’ :cornette:

this is an utter embarrassment. No excuses. This is a cup we rarely do well in, and we do something as stupid as this against a non-league side? Imagine the seethe if this happened under Romanov.

I doubt we’ll be kicked out - we would have if it was a knock-out game.

As said previously, an embarrassment for a club our size.
