The Texaco Cup

Was thinking back to this tournament and it's amazing how it caught the imagination of the fans.

Some fantastic crowds. 26k at home to Motherwell if I remember correctly. Same at the 2nd leg at Fir Park.Went through on a football special. Absolute chaos when Hearts equalised in last minute sending game to extra time. We then grabbed a winner and all hell let loose from the ground down to the station.

Final against Wolves. Another "what might have been". So close over the 2 leg final.

Great memories of games where we won well or were seriously gubbed.

Fantastic competition though.

It was great. People were locked out of that game at Motherwell. One of my most exciting and enjoyable nights and there were plenty of others in that tournament.

Before my time but it would've been interesting to have watched the games.

It seemed to go a bit downhill after Texaco withdrew and it became the 'Anglo-Scottish Cup'. The last two winners were St Mirren and Chesterfield!

Got the car stickers from the Texaco garage in South Trinity Road.

Fell out seriously with my parents when they wouldn't let me go to Wolves. Some great games and great nights.

Perth to Paisley

My Dad worked for Texaco and we got a few away freebies. GOODISON was amzazing.

However we did have to slum it a couple of times Broomfield and Fir Park being quite memorable.

From memory we were well beaten at home in final first leg but gave Wolves a shock in the return leg

I am sure that there are teams in Scotland and England, not in the Champions League or Europa League, that would welcome this type of competition back. It could be played Feb/Mar/Apr time when these teams may not have any other competition to compete in. Extra income for the clubs and extra interest for the fans. The main problem to this happening is UEFA who flog the Champions League and Europa League on the TV and getting these games on the TV would be nigh on impossible and that is what would stop any potential sponsors getting on board.

I'd forgotten about the car stickers "Hearts for the Texaco Cup". Obviously they had done versions for other teams in the competition but it was amazing how many cars displayed the Hearts one.

Funnily enough the game I remember most was the tanking we got from Burnley who were top of the English league at the time. Ralph Coates was fantastic and stood out on the park. Not just for his baldy napper!

You're right. Think we went out on aggregate though. Another chapter in our unlucky cup exit history.

Wins over Burnley, Crystal Palace and Everton, as well as Airdrie Motherwell and QotS

Couple of one leg wins too (Wolves in the '71 final) and Newcastle Utd.

We played Burnley twice in the Texaco. 1st time we beat then 4-1 at Tynie after losing 3-1 at Turf Moor. 2nd time both Hearts and Burnley were league leaders, they won 3-0 at Tynie with Leighton James ripping us apart then 5-0 at Turf Moor. Looks like they were after a bit of revenge.

The tie at Motherwell was memorable for the size of the crowd and the drama of the last minute equaliser by George Fleming. Donald Ford scored a fantastic goal in the home leg too, as well as the winner through there.

Beating Airdrie 5-0 away was a tremendous result, with Donald Ford the main man again with 4 goals.

The English clubs were no mugs. We played Newcastle, Burnley, Everton and Wolves, who were all good teams. They were the clubs who had just missed out on a European place. I think there were Irish teams in as well.

The magic of the tournament definitely wained when Texaco pulled out.

Used to enjoy the Texaco Cup (even although the clubs down south sneered at it). Skipped school to go to Burnley (what a good team they were then), Oldham (shitehole of a place) and Fulham (my first trip to London). Great days indeed.

Sounds like I'm getting my games a bit mixed up. Should have checked London Hearts first!

I do remember the thumping they gave us as they were tremendous on the night.

Wonderful atmosphere under the floodlights at all these games.

First Hearts game outside Scotland was the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace. Had the full set of the foil club creast stickers to collect of competing teams, still upset that they went missing when we moved house.

First 2 or 3 seasons it was a very successful and popular tournament, crowds for Scottish clubs were high, regularly higher than the European ties involving Scottish clubs

Wonderful games against Burnley in 71 and Everton in 73

Unfortunately English clubs completely lost interest around 1974

Whereas in 1971 we had Spurs Man City Everton and Newcastle by 1975 it was Oldham Bristol City and Chesterfield.

The 5-0 away win at Airdrie was some night. Ford scored 4. We were all happy as Larry until we got back to the buses. Every window except the windscreen was tanned in and not just our bus. Coldest trip ever back the way.

Thought for a while there should be a cross border Cup comp.

Even if it was an expanded charity shield with the EPL and FA Cup winners and the SPFL and Scottish Cup winners to test the waters.

The Texaco Cup rescued what was a dire period for Hearts fans!

Hugh Curran was mine host at my local in the late 80s . When he found out I was a JT he produced all sorts of memorabilia from upstairs in the flat. Was a good night .

Everton away.

A lot of Hearts fans were in the 'wrong' end and the Police had to escort them across the middle of the pitch into the away end.

Great night, also remember a lot of Liverpool fans in the hearts end.

Great days

Remember going to the Texaco Garage at Liberton for the stickers/posters etc

There was a bus stop on Lasswade Road that had a Hearts for the Texaco Cup sticker on it for years

I was almost in that photo. My Dad and I were a few feet along to the left just out of shot. I was 14 and tall enough to have a tremendous view.

Apparently the now demolished Ace of Hearts club was due to have a show on that night from an up and coming comedian being none other than Les Dawson. It was cancelled because of the match. Don't know if it ever took place!

Mix with a lot of English fans out here and they have NO interest in Scottish football, to the extent of ignorance at times, gawed knows what their opinion on Irish or Welsh footy is but it appears all that money has warped them as well.

I remember Ralph Coates (poor mans Bobby Charlton combover) and Dave Wagstaffe ripping us apart, Coates for Burnley and Wagstaffe for Wolves.

Once was chatting with Ian Sneddon about that game and he spoke about Wagstaffe running the show that night (I was there but too young to remember).

He said a drunk fan ran on the park, booted Wagstaffe up the arse, and shouted at Sneddon that's what he should have been doing :-) Again, too young to remember.

My dad, my pal and I were seated above the word Mackay at the top right of the picture. I wasn't allowed to mingle with the 'bad boys' in the Shed as I was too young!

Had to wait about three more years before I could stand under the Refreshments board.

searched high and low for the wolves highlights but no joy. The semi v Motherwell at fir park is on you tube.

Wonderful game. I am sure there were 29000 at Fir Park with at least 10000 from Edinburgh. What an atmosphere. When George Fleming scored in the 90+ minute to equalise the place went mental!

My old man was sadly of a Hibs persuasion so it was a personal sacrifice of his just to take me to the final.

No way was he splashing out for seats in the stand though!

The Enclosure was as far as his generosity to Hearts was going to go.

I was there with my old man(Motherwell fan) and walked along the back of the shed at HT to change ends, never seen so many scarey feckers in all my life (and that was us), crombies and scarred faces everywhere.

Thankfully, my dad was Hearts so I got a season ticket for three or four seasons to keep me out of the Shed!

Sure he meant well :)

I clearly remember being at Crystal Palace v Hearts in London. Really good. Think we won and roughly 500 Jambos present.

Was that the Texaco? Pretty sure it wasn't a friendly.

It was an inter border cup comp

This thread has reminded me of the almost unbearable excitement and tension associated with the Intertoto Cup. Although Hearts never participated I can remember sleepless nights worrying about whether Hibs could overcome top notch opponents from Latvia and Iceland.

Donald Ford'S Fir Park winner. Did he not nearly burst the net with it?

My memory of his goal was he got played through, ran in on goal and scored from about 18 yards into the bottom corner.

I'm sure there was a crowd in excess of 29,000 at the first leg of the final against Wolves. Donald Ford put Hearts a goal up but Wolves eventually ran out 3 - 1 winners. The following season Hearts beat Newcastle 1 - 0 at Tynecastle and were drawing 0-0 at St James's Park until Newcastle scored in the last minute. I think Newcastle went onto win 2-1 after extra time. I had my scarf stolen at St James' Park and as far as I remember there was quite a bit of crowd trouble at that game. After the game a guy stole my Hearts woollen hat (I was 10 years old at the time) and ran onto a bus, not expecting my faither to breenge on after him and give him a doing before emerging with my hat! I have had a strong dislike of Newcastle Utd ever since.
