Five to One

Talk about a summer cull. I guess we knew it was coming, but we're not wasting any time thankfully.

A few more to follow do doubt. I can't remember Hearts ever disposing of the services of so many players in such a short space of time? A pretty damning indictment of our recruitment policy. Cathro and Levein must have a few lined up and for their sakes (and ours) they better be decent!

We still need other clubs to want them.

Kitchen

Sammon

Oshaniwa

Johnsen

And probably a few more.

We could still end up starting the new season with some of the above if they don't move on and that'll impact our ability to bring in replacements.

Budgement day. Must have been down to about 6 or 7 players, got rid of a few many didnt agree with at the time.

If we can recruit well and make it work like last time it should be a good season

This is Budgement Day Part 2.

It's not though.

Back then the players released were out of contract. This Summer we can tell the players I listed above all we want they are free to leave.

That doesn't mean they will.

Pasquale for King

Add in Novak, Noring, Reilly to those already gone and going it's likely to be another 9 signings is it not?

Don't think Nowak will go as he can cover various positions

I'd be tempted to put Hamilton out on loan keep Noring as back up and get another keeper in

Reilly won't be back

Going to have to pull together almost an entire squad and hope they click automatically. In addition to a number of away games could be a tough start to next season.

Reilly has been told to find another club. I think this may be the start of spending a high percentage of the budget on the first 11 andmaking more use of the academy as back-up.

The cull had already started in the last window when we started emptying players out of contract this month and got fees for one or two such as Muirhead, Ozturk and Rossi.  Temporary signings were made to fill the gap which was worsened by injuries to Souttar and Paterson.  Rherras and Bikey have recently gone as have the 2 Greeks, Sowa and Struna.

A few more are likely to go, led by our former captain, Kitchen and it wouldn't surprise me to see Sammon, Reilly, McGhee, and Osh follow them out if some decent termination agreement could be arrived at.  Possible, but maybe less likely, would be Noring and Prince while Nicholson and Paterson have said they are going too.  I would guess Djoum and Walker who will leave as well if a suitable bid is received for each.

Possibly a sign that the academy is moving in the right direction but any long term injury would be hard to cover with just academy players.

Cruyff Turn

14-15 good quality senior players and the rest of the squad made up of academy players is the way forward.

If some of them are good enough to hold their own at 16/17 then they should play a part..Good enough for Ajax its good enough for us.

One of the GK need to go to bring in a good solid keeper.

Probably happy to see the back off Nowak, Oshaniwa, Martin, Buaben, Johnsen, Sammon and Reilly also.

I agree . Piss poor planning but I think he is going to come out of it dead lucky. Tearing the whole thing apart is going to leave a decent bit of budget and maybe Brandon Currie and Smith will be capable of adding to the squad

Any chance we can get rid of Martin while we're at the cull....or will preseason turn him into a world beater?

We will need a lot of luck. Burley managed to build a team quickly but there was a much bigger budget then

Either way, 4 or 5 is nowhere near enough to rebuild the side given who has left and will leave.

Keeper, left back, right back. at least 2 wide men, central midfielder and 2 strikers is an absolute minimum and will still see us short given who I still expect to depart.

Also horrendously unlucky that Patterson got knackered when he did. Strongly rumoured to be on cusp of a multi million pound move that would have paid for stand and replacements. Often forgotten by the naysayers and doom merchants having a pop at us last year. Shocking luck

I know some want rid of everyone from last season, however I can't see us wanting to sign more than 6-8 players.

Tziolis, Struna, Sowah, Avlonitis, Choulay, Bikey, Rherras and King already give = 8

Paterson and Nicolson out of contract = 2

Kitchen and Oshaniwa told they can go = 2

Sammon and Reilly out of favour = 2

That's already 14 players out of the current squad.

If we sold Djoum and Walker, and got rid of Noring, Martin, Nowak, Bauben and Johnson then that would be 21 players!!

I might be wrong, however I think we'll keep most of the last group and may even decide to keep Sammon as a squad player. I think we'll sign 6 or 7 and then supplement them with some of the younger players (Smith, Currie, Zanatta, Brandon, Roy etc). Going to be another exciting summer

Been trying to figure out who's going and who's staying.

So far Struna, Tziolis, Avlonitis, Sowah, Choulay and Bikey (6) have definitely gone; Kitchen, Nicholson and Paterson are almost definitely going (3); Sammon, Reilly and Oshaniwa (3) will go if anyone wants them. That makes 12 possibly leaving, plus Walker if we sell him.

The future of Nowak and Johnson is unclear but both are under contract. Likewise McGhee. Not sure about Noring and Bauben.

The main players staying: Goncalves, Cowie, Currie, Smith, Hughes, Souttar, Hamilton (argh!).

Who have I missed?

I'll help him out. Cathro is clearly talking shite in that interview as 4 players is nowhere near enough given the cull that is taking place.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39890687

After the January upheaval, Cathro anticipates a more manageable transfer process during the summer.

"I think four players will join us," he said. "The summer window is very different to the January window, partly because you have more time.

Robbie said something similar previously too iirc.

Perhaps IC had not fully made up his mind on who he was definitely releasing. Or he didn't fully know the playing budget. Or he didn't want to demotivate players anymore by suggesting that there was to be a massive cull. Or he didn't want to show his hand at that time. Or he is telling the truth and we are going to fill the positions with players from the Academy. Or..........

There could be quite genuine reasons for saying this. It should not be a hanging offence.

Just because you give a figure at a point in time does not mean it is hard and fast

Too many variables such as players leaving which you cannot be sure about right up to the date the window closes or what transfer fees you receive which can open up other options

I'd be surprised if we don't bring in around 6 players

A new team of 10-12 GOOD players (thats how many we will sign IMO) will not need time to GEL. They'll all be good players and they'll have 6 full weeks together to GEL. If we're not ready to rock on day 1 of the season proper, away from home or not, then either our head coach is fecked oot the park, or our DOF's recruitment policy is fatally flawed.

Sorry but I am not buying into that or excusing 10 games to GEL. Utter nonsense to expect or be willing to accept or excuse that knowing what we have to do in late May.

The 2005/06 team took all of  20 minutes against Middlesboro to GEL if I mind right.

He did not say "only 4 players will join us"  - I suspect that was the number he had in the bag.  Also at that time it was not known Kitchen was on his way out and perhaps IC still had hopes of retaining Nicholson.  As I recall the rumour was that Struna was staying and had been offered terms.  That was either a rubbish story or it fell through

I certainly would not have expected him to say 10 were coming in while the season was ongoing although with hindsight it made no difference re the points haul.

Its completely current and every man and his dog knew we would be getting rid of a huge number of players. I don't even care that he said it, just that its palpably bullshit and he should be avoiding such nonsense as much as possible given his tenuous position. Anyway, I fully expect to see around 10 new players.
