aussieh
I think it is conceivable that someone that rich would hire someone to deal with his tax. Plenty of rich people have been robbed by accounts and not noticed until it's too late. I also think Ronaldo and Messi bring millions into the Spanish economy through other avenues. But hey, if that was you or I, we'd be doing time.

Jamboelite
Personally I think he has been very harshly dealt with and believe what he says. I believe he probably doesn't concentrate on his finances to any real detail and has people who do that for him but ultimately its his responsibility. It would be interesting to see if this is consistent with previous decisions for others.

milky_26
Would appear he's not the only one. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40048229 with that being around 4 times the amount messi didn't pay i wonder if found guilty if he would end up with a sentence greater than the 2 years which he would not need to be jailed? Tommy Brown
Sorry, I'm sitting here getting pissed on my own, great Seeing Ronaldo and Messi in these predicaments, WTF. 1. How much do people rally want to earn. Both have fortunes that the couldn't possibly spend anyway. But again.. 2. Why do we have this "tax the rich" attitude, "they can afford it", hmm.. not really the point though. Times like this, I think, am I a Tory or am I socialist?, am I a commie or a capitalist? **** knows, but I have got myself into a nice lifestyle, by working hard and more recently, being sensible with money. Tommy Brown
They're rich on the back of the people. They should pay the piper. Rionldo and Messi are rich because they are gifted. Supremely talented footballers. We live in this idolised society, where we build up these celeb football stars. Admittedly, these two guys are exceptional. Not once, but twice a generation. Must admit, I haven't a clue what my point is.

hate_hibs
Only reason he's not going to serve a real sentence is because of who he is.. If this was any other normal person like you or me then we would face a custodial sentence without a doubt. Messi ain't a child no more, so to say you dont know what's happening with your money is a lot of nonsense. If i had that kinda money I'd be watching it very carefully. You most probably wouldnt as you would employ people you fully trust to do it for you. Messi most certainly did not deserve prison and I still believe he was unaware of what was happening and so has been harshly dealt with.

An accountant or financial person would have been better and being unaware is not an excuse. If it was no one would get done for dodging tax etc as they could claim "oh i didn't know"

Bindy Badgy
I don't find it hard to believe that he didn't know about what was going on with his finances. Back when I ran an LTD company Ii paid an accountant to make sure everything was done properly as I didn't have the necessary skills to sort it out on my own. I don't find it particularly hard to believe that Messi is in a similar position. You certainly have to question his judgement in letting his dad handle everything though.
