Pasquale Bruno

Came across this article (apologies as it's the sun) . Craig Levein got him to play for Cowdenbeath one day when he was on holiday in Edinburgh ! Also talks very fondly of his time at hearts and wishes he had played here for longer

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/790673/former-hearts-stopper-pasquale-bruno-has-a-decorated-cv-but-one-name-stands-out-in-his-list-of-clubs-cowdenbeath/

Think people forget what Bruno actually achieved in his career. Club wise probably one of the most decorated players to have represented hearts !

I absolutely love Bruno , the man was immense . From booting without discretion a variety of Hibs players, his celebrations at Celtic park and his demeanour in general.

Another player who 'got' us !

If anyone is feeling flush, a match worn Torino shirt from their UEFA cup final against Ajax is on that classic football shite. It's number 2 and was either worn by Bruno in the first leg or whoever replaced him when he was suspended for the second leg. It's really smart.

Was my favourite player when I was younger. I actually went to the game at Cowdenbeath, think it might've been the winter break or internationals as hearts weren't playing.

He did realise what it meant to play for Hearts and it probably enhanced his displays. However, not by much!

He was already a full blooded, personal pride filled player who'd give his all anywhere.

Not that it belittles his time at Hearts by saying that, it's obvious the club made an impression on him. The environment at the time with JJ in charge would've appealed to him hugely.

"I will go to see him the next time I?m in Edinburgh and I?ll take my boots, in case he needs me again!?

I'll gladly chip in to get him on a plane headed this way.

Remnants of Standards

He committed one of the worst fouls I've seen at Tynecastle, against Dean Windass elbowing him in the throat after being hacked at 2 or 3 times.

In hindsight I think it's wrong I burst out laughing at the time, but Dean Windass does that to you.

Loved the guy.  What a coup getting him at only 32.

Just look at him

Proper no nonsense Catenaccio Italian defender with swagger and attitude with a CV to back it up.

Almost like us signing someone like Barzagli these days.

He then proceeded to charge at the 3-4 Aberdeen players that had decided to surround him. They backed off sharpish.

With all the talk about us signing useless foreigners, it's nice to remember we used to sign good ones.

Bruno, Flogel, Roussett, Adam, Salvatore, Takis, Rudi etc.

Niemi, Aguair and de Vries too.

Not only is that a highly impressive list it is a list of players who consistently played well. Another thing our players lack.

You missed Stephane Paille.

Loved him.

Also provided one of my all-time favourite quips from the stand: guy in front of me shouted "You're mince, spaghetti!"

Don't think he heard.

Off topic: Jean-Louis Valois was another I really liked back then.

On his day, no doubt. Not many days though.

I remember fondly a game at Tynie against Hibs about 1995. Chris Jackson who I knew from my boys club days was all the news the week leading up to the game, I didn't rate him at boys club level but fair play he made it to pro level. He was a little too cocky for my liking when he was getting the press coverage considering it was a derby.

Not more than 5 minutes into the game and you could see what was coming Jacksons way. He got the ball in front of the Wheatfield and as he started to run that Bruno gasp went up around us.....you knew the minute Bruno started running where the ginger haired lad was going to land....He was duly dumped on his chorus and verse in row two of the Wheatfield. Bruno casually walks away with that wry grin on his face!

One of many to feel the force of Bruno. If you got past Salvatori there was the other Italian to beat...not many managed that.

And I wonder how many of those on that list came to the club talking about moving away from the club on to better things from day one......... either they did say it and I've erased it from my mind, or as I suspect was more likely to be the case - NONE of them came here with intentions of using us as a 'stepping stone'.

Players who wanted to be here and wanted to be Hearts players.

Salvatori too, capped up to B level by Italy, part of a European cup winning Milan team and also played for Fiorentina, Parma and Atalanta. We signed him at 28/29...

Yeah, but what I will say is that the Asian Premiership did not quite have the cream fest reaction back then as it does now.

He had in abundance what we are so short of today. Leadership, attitude hatred of defeat, guts. Not short of quality either. Made others around him better men. Not like too many of today's gutless losers.

I am still amazed we got a player of his caliber and unlike some of our current high caliber players he put the effort in and gave everything. Someone with his desire would improve our team just now greatly

Could you imagine Bruno in the recent derbies?

He'd be that much frustrated surrounded with incompetence he'd end up red carded trying to do everything on his own.

You missed Salvatori. Mahe. Flogel. Adam. And plenty others who loved the hearts and had everything today's team doesn't.

Funny story about De Vries...He was supposed to be on the bench against Hibs so went up town on the Friday night and had a few shandies. Got home too 5 missed calls from Craig Levien. Listened to the answer machine and discovered he starting due to injuries. So a hungover Mark De Vries still managed 4 against the hibs!

I met him once. He was with a very young Paul Ritchie.

I wilted. Desperate for something to say to the great man, the feeble words came out.

Great sun tan.

I met him at the West End on the Sunday of the 1998 cup final parade just before we headed up to Tynecastle for the celebrations. He must have been back in Scotland for the game. Me and my mate got our photo taken with him and had a chat - unfortunately the photo was taken by my sister in law on her camera and has long since been lost :(

I always hold out hope the photos from that day turn up somewhere. I still have my photos from my camera on the Saturday but alas all the Sunday ones are gone.

Pasquale for King

Can't for the life of me understand why we haven't went for another Italian or Czech for that matter. I know we pay less these days but the standard is also lower and players from these two nations would serve us better than some others I could mention.

Interesting to read this thread alongside the Greg Tansey one.  On the one hand we seem to have a cry to sign foreign players (of the ilk of Bruno) and on the other there's a cry bemoaning "foreign nobodies" and we should stick to British players.  Clearly this is a bit of a generalisation of the two discussions but interesting - I thought.

Great morale-boosting signing at the time. Had some very good games for us ... and some not so great games.

Don't get me wrong, loved Bruno and had an aura about him on the park which was good for the young guys round about him, but don't think he'd last very long in today's game. Would be sitting most of the season in the stand.

That's a fair point, he would have to modify his game but we are badly lacking players who appear to care now and he would not tolerate the lackadaisical approach too many of today's team have.
