How many JKBers like a bit of vinyl?

I shipped about 300 albums to Australia when I moved. I played it on and off until about 2003 when it got packed away. Dragged it all out agai last October when I bought a decent new turntable. Haven't had a vinyl free night since.

Have bought about 200 albums since. Mostly bulk buys from folk ditching old collections.

Absolutely love it, and have found some great rarities amongst some very cheap purchases.

Best way to listen to music.

Had big plans when we moved here to get in and get the house wired up with some nice high end seperates. 8 years later and only just got round to getting a decent Blaupunkt stereo

Vinyls still up in the loft. I get it all down occasionally and pop it on the usb turntable I've got but its nowhere near how it should sound.

Im just waiting for the bairns to grow up a bit more and finally get it all nice.

I see they're sellibg vinyl in Sainsburys now. ?16ish quid a pop!

It's been good buying up boxes of old vinyl for about a pound an album. Often discover artists that you'd never otherwise find. Right into Stanley Clarke because he showed up in a box of old stuff.

Bought first pressings of Rubber Soul and Sgt Peppers for 1.50 each. Both near mint. Bonanza!

This %100, I've spent hundreds on vinyl that is sold, given away or lost, funny how a 7" single I bought what I was 13/14 for 89p now costs 35 quid.

I bought this when it came out ... was up for sale for $700 on discogs until recently. Presumably sold off-site for less, but still a lot of dough for a single.

There are professional scalpers on Ebay and Discogs that hold onto items until they become hard to get then put them on sale at many times their value.  A lot of these items sit there for years until someone is desperate enough to fill a gap in their collection.

I've noticed that any time there's only 1 available copy, the price is extortionate. Way above historical prices.

Had a great online discussion about peak pricing for vinyl.

It was clear that anyone with Beatles stuff should sell it soon. Elvis prices have dropped off a cliff as the collectors have all started dying off. Similar stories from Jazz and 50's rock n roll collectors.

One jazz collector said that records that used to cost $100, can now be had for $15 because lots of big collections have come to market.

Trade in your Beatles stuff for punk.

First up the plural of vinyl is errr vinyl!!

Whoever said never sell your records is 100% correct. Unfortunately I never followed this advice and sold a shitload of my rare stuff years back. Talking about getting a ?100 per 45 20 odd years ago but by *** do I regret it now. Not because of the values really.. Just had some belters that I'll never own again..Still have a decent collection . Maybe 5/600 45s and same LPs..

Back when I collected heavily there was no Internet. So you bought at soul nights or from specialist dealers.. You sometimes bought blind or tape swapping with other collectors. Great days. Loved coming home from work to see a cardboard mailer sitting there.

One of the daftest things i've done but was young and needed the cash. All my Alice Cooper albums and other great stuff from the early seventies. Cost a fortune to get them now !

Where about did you get them valued? I used to take records into Ripping Records and they would stick them up on the wall and sell it for you, with commission, but I never thought you got a good deal doing it that way.

I have about 400 records that I might think about selling soon. They're gathering dust at my mum's house and as I sold my decks about 7 years ago I really have no use for them.

Does anyone know where I'd be best placed to advertise these for sale and what would be a reasonable price? I'm sure a few of the records are probably worth something but most won't be of great interest.

They are all progressive, trance, techno - mostly singles with a few albums. Labels like Hooj choons, Soma, Bedrock, Renaissance come to mind. A few classics like Mory Kante 'Yeke Yeke" in there. :singer:

The thing with 'valuable' vinyl is that it needs to be absolutely mint. As in never ever been out of its sleeve mint and certainly never played.

A lot if folk with 'rare' stuff are often disappointed.

Just put the artist and name of album.single ect and it gives you a value.

For valuing try popsike or discogs but even that has its variables.. Condition, sometimes something as daft if the artist has recently died lol.

I'm mostly speaking from the rare soul side of things. May be different in other genres but I would doubt it.

The 1st sentence is not really true but the 2nd is spot on.

If a record is in demand and rare, even lesser condition examples will have reasonable value. Obviously M or NM will attract a much higher premium. Tvhere's a sliding scale of value against condition but lower graded rarities, if they are rare, still definitely have value.

Everyone thinks their Beatles or Elvis records in the attic must be rare but they are worth buttons most of the time.

Everyone had them and they were mostly pressed in high numbers and are everywhere in average condition.

I've got about 6'000 records including some extremely rare tunes. Probably about  50% techno / electro / house, 40%hiphop and 10% film soundtrack, dubstep, drum n' bass / jungle, metal, dub, reggae, 80's, disco / Italo, breakcore etc

I have this in pristine nick with the poster.

Some of the rare items are things people least expect.

One example being a Foo Fighters CD Single - Have It All.  It had a Prince cover of Darling Nikki on the B-Side which started to get airplay in the U.S. and demand for it grew.

Generally if a record sold massively like a lot of The Beatles stuff then there are lots of copies to be found and therefore at a lower price.  If the record was a limited edition release at a time when a band wasn't so popular then it can rocket in value.

I'm guessing it's just the first pressing US version that's rare because there's a fair few other versions for sale.

It was going for about ?40 regularly a few years ago.  Haven't looked recently.  For a ?3 single that is quite a profit.

My rare items are the Iron Maiden box sets "The Story So Far Parts 1 and 2".  Got them as a Christmas present in 1995 and apparently they are extremely rare and almost never appear for sale.

The Bowie Station To Station Super Deluxe box set I have appears to be going for silly money whenever I see that on sale.  I picked it up for about ?55 a year or so before Bowie made his comeback in 2013.

There's only one vinyl that I ever want, and it would be for a gift based on a private joke with a friend.

It's by Nigel Peppercock (*edit - starred out!) and it's called Fresh White Reeboks Kicking Your Ass.  The album art is very very NSFW, but I think it would look lovely in a frame on his bedroom wall

If anyone ever comes across it, let me know!  I know for a fact the music itself is garbage, but I don't really care!

Only one album that I intend to own and that is Hot Fuss by the killers

It's my favourite album by my favourite band and I don't ever intend to play it, I just want to own the vinyl of it

Had a couple of singles from the enemy (we'll live and die album era) on vinyl but would happily sell them
