Sutton v Arsenal: Wayne Shaw's pie-eating investigated by FA & Gambling Commission

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39037401

Personally, if the bookie was stupid enough to offer the bet, they should take the hit. They wouldn't complain if the player actively chose. It to eat one.

It does look unprofessional from the player, but I am not sympathising with the bookie.

Not sure if it falls under the FAs jurisdiction though, since the player claims he never actually bet himself, and it is not actually betting on the match.

Bookies hate it when you beat them eh? - Coral recently with the guy that put money on rangers getting relegated when they died so Coral tried to weasel out.

Coral are right on that occasion, in my opinion, though I think they ballsed up the court case as they were too scared to say Rangers died.

Of course they have a right to claim that. Rangers weren't relegated as per the bet, they were liquidated and forced to start anew in the fourth tier.

The guy trying to claim ?250,000 from them is as ridiculous as that Hibs thing trying to claim that Griffiths free kick against Hearts, which was not given as a goal, should count as a goal  .

The bookies who offered the bet were "Sun bet" the same sun bet that were emblazoned across the front of Suttons shirts as a one off sponsorship deal for that match!

Definitely not dodgy !!!

Although you could argue that the BBC would have to be in on it to have the Pie eating live on tv?

Anyway I'm sure it was a pasty not a pie  :)

I bet the Sun bet guys thought the were hilarious when they came up with that bet. The Sutton keeper is fat lolz. The gambling commission should tell them to suck it up and pay up.

Goalie has now left the club.

He knew that people had put money on him eating a pie and ate a pie anyways.

Clear breach of gambling rules.

What a twerp.

The bookies paid him to eat the pie. It's a publicity stunt.

Surely he was ****ed if he didn't eat or if he ate the pie.

Stupid bet.

This, however he didn't need to stick his head out the dugout in such an obvious way whilst munching it.

He'll no doubt be able to cash in on his new found fame.

What utter nonsense. Because he knew people had put money on it he shouldn't do it?"Aye a missed the penalty because I kent people had a punt on me for first goalscorer so I didnae want to breach gambling rules."

This a load of complete pish.

The bookies should never have put an obvious own goal of a bet together.

What Shaw did has nothing to do with sport/football/integrity

He had a laugh because arsehole bookies basically opened a door for him to do so.

The world is actually full of arseholes these days....

Bazzas right boot

Tbf, the bet was in poor taste.

However, looking at him, if someone gave me 8-1 that he'd eat a pie, you got to take it, be silly not too, if it was 8-1 on eating an apple, I'd have stayed clear.

It's a car crash of a market to have created.

Nothing to do with football, odds, percentages.

Will a fat dude eat a pie?

What arsehole thought of that and didn't weigh up the chance of being trolled by somebody that is clearly a joker?

Someone arsehole from PR. Who had heard of Sunbet a few days ago? Hardly anyone. Now most football fans will have. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of advertising for about 10 grand.

Guy who cannot play in a football match eats a pie = Loses his job and is forced to walk away from his club.

Just shows how much of a farce the rule has become. It's bizarre enough that a player for, say Shrewsbury, is forbidden from betting on whether or not Karsiyaka in the Turkish leagues can beat Rizespor, never mind the fact that a player, who legally could not play in the game (given that all 3 subs had been made), did something irrelevant to the actual match, that could not in any way have impacted the result of outcome of the match he could not play in.

Think some people are misunderstanding what has happened here.

Shaw appeared in a newspaper advert advertising the 8/1 for him to eat a pie during the game and it to be on TV. An advert he will have been paid for.

It appears he has then been asked to do the pie eating by the bookies themselves. Possibly been paid extra for doing so.

He's told a few mates that he will be doing it and some of them have had bets on.

He carries it through and the images of him doing it are all over social media last night.

The bookies then mention that they have taken a 50 grand hit on the market.

It gets loads of traction in the media and the like and the bookies plan of getting loads of publicity is a success. It has worked out perfectly for them. They don't care about the 50 grand.

Sutton themselves have to take a large portion of the blame for getting involved with the bookies in the first place.

Bet the pie tasted good though

Feel sorry for the guy, he went out to have a laugh and get '5mins of fame'. If this sort of bet breeches rules if broken then bookies shouldn't be allowed to open a market for it in the first place

This covers it as far as I'm concerned. Nobody comes out of this looking good.

I P Knightley

Never mind the pie eating, do you think this guy will sign for Hibs now?

Given the grief that's being directed at Hamilton, could he do a job for us?

As others have said - an utterly stupid PR exercise from the bookie. The guy was in a lose-lose situation and Sutton should not have let him go. However, they'd taken the Murdoch shekel and would have had to throw the Sun under a bus if they hadn't put Shaw's head on a spike.
