Chinese Super League limits foreign players (NHC)

It turns out that the Chinese also have no cares for foreign players:

Chinese Super League clubs will only be allowed to play three non-Chinese players per game in their next season - which begins in March.

A rule change has reduced the number of foreigners allowed in a move which could slow down the wave of big-money signings from Europe.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been linked with a move to China that would be worth ?30m a year.

A statement said the new measures will address "irrational investments".

Previously the rule was "4+1" - four foreigners of any nationality plus one Asian player in a matchday squad.

Teams will now also be required to name two Chinese players aged under 23 in their matchday squads, with at least one in the starting XI, with the Chinese Football Association also looking into "signature fees and other illegal activities" in recent transfers.

Chelsea midfielders Oscar and John Mikel Obi have already moved to China this month, while former Manchester United and Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez reportedly became the world's highest-paid player when he joined Shanghai Shenhua last month.

Shenhua would be one club hit by the new rules as they have six non-Chinese players in their squad, including Tevez, former Chelsea forward Demba Ba and ex-Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins.

Costa has been linked with a move to Tianjin Quanjian, who signed Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel for a salary of more than ?15m a year this month.

'A move to foster local talent' - analysis

BBC China correspondent Stephen McDonell

Chinese teams have been paying reportedly exorbitant sums to lure international stars like Carlos Tevez and Axel Witsel. Now, the new rules will especially affect players from the Asian region - like Australians and Koreans - who were able to be chosen on top of the previous international count of four.

It is hoped the changes will foster more local talent at the expense of overseas players.

It's a bit of a shame, because for once the English teams were getting a taste of their own medicine.

I understand that they want to develop more Chinese players but surely three is a bit of a low number?

As I mentioned in another thread, players like Tevez will be loving it as there won't be any overly daft wages being thrown about now

Rudolf's Mate

Seems a bit strange they've brought this in for the new season. I'm guessing clubs either knew about it already or that it will be challenged.

Then again it is China.

3 is a really low number - 5 would be more realistic, and would still allow for more than half the starting line up to be Chinese.

If we had the same rules, we'd have needed to pick 3 out of Johnsen, Djoum, Kitchen, Rherras, Ozturk*, Rossi*, Oshaniwa, Bauben, Nowak, and Sammon. (* have obviously left recently).

Viktor Noring still definitely wouldn't get a game under those rules

Howdy Doody Jambo

Good way to develop your own national team and league, they will only recruit the highest standard of player not like the Scottish league which recruits the left overs

More interestingly is the money spent to entice top international coaches to the Super League.  Of the 16 teams in the league, only two teams had a Chinese coach/manager and one of these was Henan Jianye.  Well kent names like: Scolari, Pellegrini, Villas Boas, Poyet, Megath, Stojkovic will not be cheap.

Means most likely Ryan McGowan will be looking for a new club..

Played pretty much every game last season as the 'Asian' player.

Will hit the Australians at clubs the most.

They already had a limit. This will make **** all difference to the type of signings they are making and trying to make from European clubs.

Context is a bit different. Population of Scotland 5million. Population of China 1.3billion. Was 3 foreigners not the rule in Europe for years?

The biggest risk for the league is that mixed with silly money, this creates such a gap between the skill of the few show ponies and the rest of the team that it becomes a farce.

It will also just concentrate each team's budget for star players on fewer players, meaning that for them wages are likely to go up. Although there is some suggestion in the article that the league plan to take some steps to address signing on fees.

If even half the money these clubs are spending was put into youth academies then they'd develop some top talents.

Seeing it clarified on the Gowser thread with good article from Australia.

5 in squad. 3 in team. So that will mean 3 on pitch. So 2 foreign subs. Sow always came on for another foreigner.

Main affect is on the Australian players (the +1).
