Anyone got one? They worth the money? Birthday coming up and was pondering getting one. Don't have Hive or Philips Hue lighting, would that matter?

I've got one. Wanted a new speaker for listening to music in the house and it's ideal. I find myself listening to more music now as it's far easier to just ask for something to be played rather than having to connect my phone via cable or Bluetooth (connecting to Bluetooth still an option). Other things I use it for is adding things to a shopping list and setting reminders for events or timers for cooking etc. Also very easy to ask it to play radio stations.

I have signed up for Amazon Music Unlimited which is 4 quid a month for use just on the Echo (note this is different from Amazon Prime Music which has a vastly inferior level of music).

If you use iTunes or Google Play as your music source then it might not be as worth your while as you can't link these directly to the Echo and you would have to use like any other Bluetooth speaker.

In terms of sound quality I have no issues with it. Some people I have seen say the sound is distorted at higher volumes but I haven't found that. Could you get a better quality Bluetooth speaker for the price? I'm sure you could, but to my unsophisticated ears I doubt I'd notice much difference.

It understands you very easily from across the room, although I have found that when having people round it finds it difficult to understand your request above the background noise.

I like it and I'm glad I bought it.

A good a review as I'm likely to find. Cheers for that. Think I'll get one then. I've got Spotify Premium so will use that for the music. The rest, like reminders and things, I'll work out as I go. Cheers.

Walter Payton

I've got one and use it along with Spotify Premium, otherwise Sooperstar's review could have been mine word for word.

We also have some Smart light bulbs in 2 rooms and a Logitech Harmony remote control. 90% of the time it's just encouraging laziness (but still fun!) to be able to just ask the Echo to turn the TV or lights on but sometimes (like coming into the living room with arms full of bags) it's really useful.

If you already have a decent Bluetooth speaker go for the Echo Dot, save ?100

Is the Echo the thing that orders stuff online if it picks up an advert on the TV?

If it hears its name first it could. I've got it and think it's really good....still to get it linked up to the lights and heating though. I gave them to loads of people for Xmas presents and they all love it.

Give Amazon all my personal info? Nah

If you order something from them then they have it. What more do you think they're going to get from your Echo? That you like to listen to Britney Spears on repeat?

Love mine.

It's an expensive radio at the moment but I'm gradually making my own playlists with prime music unlimited, use the timer for when I'm cooking, get my news flash brief. My two boys love it. You can enable skills such as play twenty questions. My oldest has found an old school kids adventure game which he really likes.

May invest in some smart lighting later this year and an echo dot for my bedroom. Hopefully Scottish football will eventually be available on the sports news briefs.

Alexa is a great bursd to have....she just needs a hole in the back and......

Yep. And? Are you scared of buying things?! Occasionally I'll look for a product on Amazon which I don't buy. Amazon might then send me emails about that product to entice me to buy it. Know what I do? Delete the emails.

I've played about with the Amazon Music Unlimited app yet but it seems a bit clunky. How do you go about creating the playists?

Edit: ignore me, it's easy.

Should have also said I had a Kindle Fire.....which helps.

Got one for Christmas and using it mainly for radio and alarms-anyone got any cool ideas I can use with it?

Apparently you can get it to give you 7 morning work outs so I might try that out

Look up Alexa skills that you can enable. My boys keep playing 20 questions with it. (It didn't guess Darth Vader though....dumb broad)

Get and Echo Dot (?50) and a Sonos 1 (?150) - you'll get all the Alexa features and in Q1 this year, Alexa will be able to control the Sonos - the sound from a Sonos 1 is far better than the main Echo unit. Got 3 Sonos 1s and two dots in the house and loving it. I use Alexa to check my commute, do sums, create news report that I want to hear that she tells me in the morning, there's games, shopping and loads of other cool/fun stuff.

Hope we get it in the UK at the same time as US. They seem to have many more features than us just now.

Here's a Sonos / Alexa corporate bullshit video...
