Oliver Burke - An in demand young Scot

Oliver Burke is a young Scottish player who is attracting a lot of interest. He is 19 years old and Scottish born, plays for Nottingham Forrest and has scored 4 goals in his last 4 games. People will be aware that he has been called up for the national team last week, having made his Scottish international debut back in March. He is a tall pacy winger who likes run directly at the defenders and has been likened to Gareth Bale.

West Brom made a ?6m bid earlier in the window but it was rejected, Forrest are holding out for ?10m. Now many clubs are looking to make bids for him or keeping interest in him with Sunderland,  Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and even Bayern Munich being reported as those after him. The Sun this evening is saying Man U are wanting to sign him and loan him back to Forrest for the rest of the season.

Now this may end up with nothing happening, but its nice to see a young Scottish player being linked with top clubs (though depressing at how much money clubs will spend for Championship based Scottish born player over one who plays in Scotland.

He has talent and pace but he is also much stronger as he has moved through his late teens

There are one or two good talented Scottish youngsters breaking through but they are still not fully developed today

Players like Burke, Tierney, Robertson, Kingsley (and Scotland has 3 of the best young left backs in the UK).are on the verge of making it as established players but just need a year to mature fully.

If we could just get a top class centre back, midfielder and striker Scotland would be okay..not great but okay

The transfer window may see Burke move on for a large fee but if not this summer than almost certainly next

Completely agree. Its slight frustrating that we have produced 3 great left backs at the same time. But its much needed talent. I still think Souttar has the talent and mentality to be that center back but its still a few seasons off. I also think Ryan Gauld, providing he gets game time on his loan, will kick on.

I do think we are starting to see real talent come through for Scotland, it will take time but I think Scotland can improve.

Burke really excites me and I'd be tempted to start him in Malta. Go with the guy in form for once rather than play the usual suspects.

He's good enough to cope and if nothing else it'll nail him to Scotland as he could still technically switch to England, though I don't get the impression he would.

I think he'd be better served staying at Forest for the year and getting 40 odd games under his belt and if he kicks on as expected the big move will still be waiting on him.

Dusk_Till_Dawn

Was in the away end at Forest today (Leeds shite again, stewards were dicks and it pelted with rain. Apart from that, great.)

Burke's physique is very much like that of Bale. Tall, stocky, a good leap on him. He didn't have much of a game tbh, quiet for most of it, but proper quality at the end for his goal.

Apparently that cap-wearing bawbag Pulis was there today. Hope Burke doesn't got to West Brom.

Agree with this

Better served leaving at 21/22 rather than now - probably runs the risk of being left to play in that Premier League 2 nonsense if a Spurs or someone else signs him now

Seen him live a couple of times, he looks tall and fast but very raw at the moment, here's hoping he can turn out to be a superstar.

Never heard of the guy so thanks for starting the thread, sounds promising. Did he play for any Scottish clubs as a youngster or has he been at Forest the whole time?

He's already been capped for Scotland, he came on against Denmark

He'll be too short to start for Strachan though (or some other half baked excuse)

I thought they changed the rules and friendlies no longer count?

I really hope so. He made a brave move.  I want it to work out for him but he seems to be just not making the progress he undoubtedly wants to.

Not sure about his background but if he's good enough he'd be better off playing for England

Tbf I remember when people on here were giving Strachan pelters for calling up some unknown 18 year old from the Championship. I'm no fan of him but he's got this one right.

Guest Paul Allen

Kingsley, Fulton and McBurnie are breaking into the Swansea team, plus Fraser is starting at Bournemouth, and Robertson and Snodgrass at Hull.

Yep....If good enough then getting to tournaments regularly he'd be better off with them & I'd guess playing for England he'd also be more marketable off field as well.

This mentality is what's wrong nowadays.

If you're born in Scotland you should play for Scotland, providing good enough. Not hold out to play for a better team where your Gran was born or in some cases due to religious preference.

It should be an honour to represent where you come from.

He came through the academy there. Perhaps his family moved south when he was young or were just temporarily in Kirkcaldy?

Callum Paterson was born in London but grew up in South Queensferry. He feels Scottish so thankfully the birth rule no longer exists in that respect.

Sounds like he could play for either Scotland or England? Depends how he feels himself but if he wanted to & was good enough he'd be better off choosing England.

His club career will dictate how marketable he becomes. Nothing to do with Nationalty.

Burke, Paterson and Lacovitti have pretty much tied their colours to Scotland.

Good times ahead with very good young players coming through.

Depends when he came over and like most things there's going to be grey lines e.g. Shaun Maloney was born in Malaysia when his parents were on holiday.

I personally think it's getting too similar to the likes of cricket and rugby where you can play for who ever you want as there's a rule.

My preference wouldn't be to play guys like Ritchie, despite thinking he's a good player, as he hadn't even been to Scotland until our first game.

I would rather be a shit team and play all our players, than a shit team playing guys not good enough to play for England.

I fear that if 'the Scottish Gareth Bale' didn't exist, someone would have to invent him. Remember when Michael Owen was the big thing and Burchill was being touted as our answer?

Boy certainly sounds promising, though.

My rule would be where a player was born or grew up. Parents birthplace and have to declare what their preferred country is to represent when they register as a professional.

Always wary of players being talked up as the next (insert name of world class player)

Never seems to come to much as your example shows

Long holiday, they didn't come back to Scotland until he was about 5.

Ah, just made a new thread about this not realising this thread already existed. Apologies.

But yeah, that's some amount of money and a very interesting move for him.

So is that a new record transfer for a Scottish player ?

I've seen figures from ?10M-?15M quoted.

Ross McCormack's last two transfers have been ?11M and ?12M (wiki)

Think I read somewhere that it is Red Bull that own them but there's some German association rule against them changing the name for commercial reasons so they made it Rasenballball then shortened to RB to make people think it was red bull. Mines is limited knowledge someone may be able to expand but I think that's what happened.

Anyway on topic, never heard of the laddie but good to see a young Scottish player going for a decent sum. Forrest fans, the ones on Twitter anyway, seemed unhappy that he was off.
