Hi,

The question's been asked on the main thread.  I'm an (very long!) exiled Hamiltonian and stay there when I head up for Hearts games - 3-4 times a year. The Academical Vault is about 100 yards to your right as you exit Hamilton West Rail Station. It's on the main Road Junction with a double mini roundabout and traffic lights. They're always advertising cheap drinks :).  There's another pub across the road on the same junction which is a bit more upmarket but I don't know the new name since it was done up.  The Accies fans are no bother at all and are a friendly, good humoured lot on the whole so micing in pubs should be fine. They know they're punching far above their weight and are enjoying the ride.

I know for a fact there are a good few Hamilton resident Jambos around and a couple on here too - their knowledge is probably better.

Is that mixing or mincing? Either way, I'm covered.

Heading on my own so will pop in for a shandy somewhere.

oops, slip of the fingers ;)   If you're coming in from Glasgow, wasy peasy - 4 trains an hour to Hamilton West for you.  Like the old strip in your avator btw - I've got that one stuffed in a drawer somewhere..

Should you wish to mince rather than mix (of course I meant 'mixing') with the locals you may have to try a different pub :)

The Academical Vaults has tended to be a home fans and regulars only pub last couple of years after bother from Dundonians. Most away fans tend to head to The Tap Room next to Equis or Bar West(Silver Tassie) which has a beer garden across the road....alternatively you have The Villa Hotel just round the corner from The Vaults/Hamilton West station just past the shop on the corner. That has been busy with away fans. The Clydesdale hotel behind the big car park is also within walking distance.

Alternatively,The Bay Horse or ML3 are not far.Neither is The Greenfield Social Club-a shortish walk from the railway bridge just behind the Main Stand.

If none of these suffice, plenty pubs in the Town Centre, three of which are close to Hamilton Central.Four trains an hour to Hamilton West.Think the ones you guys would get are around 14:25 or 14:42....short journey of 2-3 minutes.

Hi Accies67 and welcome to the board! I lived in the town until 1981 so if 67 is your year of birth then we're the same age. I did 2 and a bit years at Hamilton Grammar before being dragged South by my family for work.  I went to the odd game in my last couple of years there and distinctly remember legendary crazy fan 'Fergie' , always dressed in his dinner suit, constantly bawling at the team and getting half the ground to himself :).  Still have a wee soft spot for the Accies and great to see that they still occasionally unearth a talent or 3.  Glad you've piped up re pub knowledge as mine is limited to what I see on weekends up there.  My dad used to drink in the Barleycorn on Low Waters Road, which, I believe still has the same name.

I'm getting the 11:12 from Haymarket to Motherwell and transferring to Hamilton West from there. Should get in for half 12. Look forward to a few beverages.

Can u get kids in the pub next 2 the station at Hamilton west

Guys I know who go regular with their kids go elsewhere as they are a bit huffy...Bay Horse and the 2 hotels may be a better bet.

Just a shame old Fergie is no longer with us.The guy would be a worldwide star in the social media age.He would eat wee " you want some" and the Killie guy for breakfast lol.

Some great Fergie stories.I may put a couple on here. They would have everyone buckled in laughter.

Hi Accies67,

Fergie was quite well known to match attending Scottish Football fans of all persuasions and I've no doubt a few funny Fergie tales would be well received here, so do get typing ;). At the old Douglas Park, he could be heard in all parts of the ground and seen too as no one would stand within 20 yards of him.  A true one off and good shout re the social media age. About 20 years ago, London Hearts used to do a newsletter 3/4 times a season and there was a great article in it once, all about him.  It mentioned the time he was at a reserve game and stood in the pissing rain for an hour after the final whistle to boo the departure of the visiting team's coach...... :rolleyes5:  The article said that his name wasn't even Ferguson!  Not sure who wrote it - Davy Allan or Drew Goldie perhaps.

I last saw him in 1998 at Broadwood for an Accies v Airdrie game when both sides were homeless. Airdrie won 3-2 and the stewards put Fergie in a section all on his own because he was so loud and no-one wanted him near them (as usual).... :(     I was only there because the Hearts game was on the Sunday and the latter game was Jose Quitongo's last gasp equaliser v Celtic, a player who played for us both.  When did Fergie finally leave us ?

Met the guy once, You are right he would leave the rest stunned if they met up. Think if i am right, he got put of the team bus for telling the players how bad they were.

Fergie's real name was Ian Russell, died aged 71 in 2009.

That surprises me - I thought he was a lot older. I went to a few games at Douglas Park around 1980/81  when he would have been 42/43.  I don't suppose he looked after himself very well though so looked older. I don't think he even worked most of the time though my brother though he saw him selling the Evening Times in the street in Glasgow.

But what a character! Harmless really.  I do hope Accies67 comes back with some stories...

Surprised he lasted so long tbh. I gather ill health forced him to miss the last 6 years of accies games whilst alive too.

Unfortunately, old Fergie was mugged by junkies, and was never the same again and was never well enough to turn out to support his team again.Plenty folk from Scottish fitba were at his funeral. The likes of John Lambie for example.

One of my funniest Fergie moments was travelling to Clydebank-the real Clydebank-not the Airdrie lot.

Train hits Partick station and a busty, blonde middle aged Ticket Inspector joins the train and makes a beeline straight to our carriage.Fergie was beside himself with excitement.....the infamous tongue was out and the hands were being rubbed furiously.

The aforementioned lady Ticket Inspector asks Fergie for his ticket.Fergie grabs her ample cleavage, ignoring the request....bish,bash,bosh....the Ticket Inspector turns round lamping Fergie with the ticket machine sending him flying.

Two steps later,The BT Police appear.....no game for Fergie that day.

Another legendary tale was Fergie v Graeme Souness.

Picture the scene.Loads of the Souness era Rangers fans waiting outside the old Douglas Park dressing room for The Rangers team bus.

This was the week after Souness split from his wife. The bus appears and the first person off is Souness himself.....I remember it like it was yesterday. The cries go up "Souness,Souness etc".Souness spots Fergie outside the Players Entrance...

Fergie: "Sorry to hear you split from your wife Mr Souness"

Souness: "Thanks for that Fergie"

Fergie: "You'll not be getting any of that then"....(Fergie gesticulates sexual actions in his indomitable manner)

Souness stormed into the Players Entrance raging, face going purple....to make matters worse, all the Rangers fans were also pissing themselves laughing at Souness.

The tales of old Fergie would make a cracking book.Youngsters these days would be mesmerized by him.

His antics could fill a book. I bet every club had characters like these that are sadly dying out in some respects. He was a true fan who lived for his club even if people didn't like his foghorn voice at games sometimes.

I agree - his story deserves to be told and what a great book it would make. No football fan of any persuasion would easily forget him. I think the loss of the terracing has contributed a lot to the loss of characters like that from the game. Still, we have our own 'Karate Keith'.

Accies67, thanks very much for your stories - a fun read! I had heard that he had an eye for the ladies but that was a wee bit disturbing!

So desperately sad that his life ended the way that it did. Assaulted in his own home by junkies and unable to go the games for the last 6 years of his life. Some real scumbags around. Hope they were caught and punished. I went to Douglas Park for a game around 2005 and had a look around for him in the crowd and couldn't see him. It was the day before the the SC Semi v Celtic with the interrupted minute's silence.

RIP Fergie - a real character of Scottish Football. Funny how he was so well known by fans of other clubs too.

That's a great photo Farin. A real portrait of the lovable nutcase. Exactly how I remember him. I'm sure I remember reading that he lived in Ferniegair (which gave him his nickname), before moving on to Hillhouse, where Davie a Cooper and the Ferguson brothers, Derek & Barrt came from.

Do you have a connection with the area Farin? Both sides of my family are from the area and my grandad worked down the pit beside one J. Stein!
