Goal Scorer

Anyone else a little concerned that with Keatings being released we don't have a real goal poacher in the squad for the coming season? If we sign one more player after Juwon I would like to see us move for a proven 15-20 goals a season striker, but they are never cheap.

FTR I don't think Keatjngs would be good enough at Premiership level so this is not a moan about him.

I've a feeling we'll be looking at another forward but the budget must be at a stretch now I'd have thought.

Reilly ,I think , will be drip fed this season as opposed to being looked upon as a solid starter, that really just leaves Sow and Juanma as out and out forwards. Oliver is another in the bracket similar to Reilly.

I'm not really concerned - from what I saw of Juanma, with Sow fit again and Oliver continuing to develop, as well as the excellent young trio of Walker, King and Nicholson I think we will be fine for goals.

I am more concerned about how we compete in midfield against the stronger teams - against Hibs and Rangers last season we struggled to retain the ball. When that wasn't a problem we scored goals from every position

People need to give this keatings thing up. He's not kicked a ball for hibs.

His injury record is almost as bad a Clum.

He was never going to give us what we needed.

So far I have been really impressed with the fitness of Sow. If we have found a way to keep him fit and play to his strengths like at the start of last season we will be forgetting all about Keatings.

On top of that you don't know what Juanma is capable of yet either. He could hit 25 this season, you just don't know.

This is my concern as well.

I hope there is enough left in the budget to bring someone in. Wont be cheap though.

I did clarify that I didn't think Keatings was the answer either, but probably as close as we had to a poacher. I hope we can get as many goals from midfield as we did last year but it is a step up.

Captain Canada

Sow, Juanma, Reilly, Walker, Nicholson, King and Paterson could realistically all get into double figures. I'd rather we signed a right back.

Indeed.  I've seen folks calling for a new striker but I would feel far more comfortable about this team if we brought in a rock solid CM.

With enough service we have plenty of goal threats, we just need to control the middle of the pitch.

Why? To stifle L Smiths development - the club will promote its youth if good enough

Would love Sow and/or Reilly to get a goal on Thursday to boost their confidence (not that I'm saying it's low now).

Keatings has done really well in pre season for hibs.

Aye, saw that on Saturday.

Obviously I'm joking, don't think he's kicked a ball for them yet. He'll be no loss whatsoever.

I thought Smith did really well in the pre-season games even at left back which is not his natural position.

I'm not so much 'worried' but I am unsure how many goals we will be getting, after all the step up is probably one notch of progression ahead of the experience the midfield got bagging goals in the championship. What I mean is - they may have developed over the last term, but the step up may 'equalise' that.

I certainly don't expect them all to get as many goals as last term - and if we have Reilly who bagged 13 last term (?) to replace Keatings or Zeefuik who (can't be certain) got about 11 and 12 goals respectively - then I do wonder a wee bit how we will get on. Lot of pressure on Juanma. And we have to account of El Hass being out.

I guess budgets are budgets - and we run the club well now, so I don't want over spending. I trust AB,CL,RN - and if they want strength elsewhere - good enough for me. Would love another striker, but can't see it happening.

Would not be at all surprised to see someone else in before the end of the window.

Much rather we signed a box-to-box midfielder.

What I would like next too, a tough tackling ball winning box to box midfielder.

Always thought our midfield is to lightweight.

In 2003/04 we ran away with third place in an extremely comfortable fashion by a 16-point margin, with De Vries our top scorer on 13 goals; I don't think anyone else hit double figures. I would expect one, maybe two, of our strikers to hit that mark in 2015/16. People may say the makeup of the league is different this year, but not so significantly that we should not be aiming for a similar return in all departments to that year to secure a top 3 finish.

The Treasurer

We've not had a real 20 goal striker since Robbo.

I'm happy enough if we continue in the same way as last season with 4 or 5 players around the 10-12 goal mark

Dead right Scott and I'm sure the management will be well aware of that.

If we are to challenge this season the midfield will have to be dominant most of the time and I just hope they can be.

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that, with El hass's injury we'd be looking at at least 1 more (which would intimate an attacking player) + cover for any outgoing loanees, of which there are a number of enquiries.

I see it slightly differently. Gomis gives you 90 minutes of terrier like hassling of opponents in midfield. He's always running about trying to win the ball back. Pallardo sits in and breaks up attacks through the middle. What we are missing is a player with ideas to take the ball forward and use it effectively once it is won. Buaben can do it but once he went out injured there was nobody else who had that vision and creativity going forward through the middle.

Ifs and buts, big Zeefuik would have fell into that 20 goals a season bracket.

Remember it's not over until....

I've mentioned like others here that 'CM' is my main concern this season. I also think we're too lightweight in this area. If finances permit it , I hope we strengthen in this area .

Tokyo Drifter

I'd like to have kept Keatings as I don't see that swapping him for another player with no proven track record in the Premiership - Gavin Reilly - makes good business sense.

The one we let slip through our fingers was Zefuik. Nobody can have been surprised when Gronigen let him go on a free so why weren't Hearts there waiting to bring him back to Tynie? Either something went on behind the scenes that made it unviable - wage demands? He didn't want to come? - or that  was a serious fumble from Robbie and Craig Levein.

However I agree that a poacher isn't necessary: we didn't have one in the 06/06 season, most of our goals came from midfield (Skacel/Hartley) and one of the encouraging aspects of last season was the spread of goals. By the end of the season we were fielding teams where Alexander was practically the only player without a goal to his name. Three strikers plus Walker with eight to ten goals each will do me.

Robbie and Craig think Juanma is better. That's why they picked him instead.

They weren't to know El Hass would get crocked.

I would also think the Turkish side offered more cash than we could which maybe answers the "why not both" question.

Tbf Keatings also had no track record in the premiership.

I'd have liked to get Big Z back too, however at the time Gronigen were wanting money for him and by the time he became available on a free then we'd already signed Juanma and Reilly and Oliver had scored a few goals in friendlies so it's possible the people in charge thought we had enough up top. Plus if the Turkish team offered him twice as much as we could then there's nothing we can do. Nobody is worth breaking the wage structure for considering how that left us before!

All that said, since then El Has has got injured again and being selfish I'd like a proven goal scorer in although not sure how realistic that is. If we could only get one more in then I'd like it to be an attacking midfielder in the Cameron/Hartley mould who can make things happen and chip in with a fair few goals.

Prediction time: I reckon Sow will be our top scorer with 13 this season

I'm not sure we've got anyone who'll hit more than say 15, but Keatings definitely wouldn't have, so I'm not worried about that. Zeefuik would have been a nice option in some games, but I'd rather have someone who contributes more to the team overall, especially given that we'll probably have less of the ball this year. There were a couple of games in the latter half of last season where our other attacking play was less effective because he was a bit static (putting it kindly). Good player, but I think he'd have found the step up a bit harder than most.

so was aberdeen's midfield too lightweight last year as well with willo flood and Ryan jack ?

our big laddies at front and back can impose and allow our ball players to play. Think folk are underestimating Gomis' ability to get stuck in as well. A centre mid can make up in tenacity what they don't have in strength.
