Ipswich Targeting McGhee?

No quotes to back the story up - just a rumour at this moment.

I think McGhee has a big future at Hearts and would hate to see him go. I know we have recruited in his position over the summer and i don't imagine Ipswich will be guaranteeing him first team football either - just a bigger wage. I expect he will be an important squad member for us this year.

I doubt that they could afford or be willing to pay the amount that we'd want for him.

He's got a whole lot of potential but is still young and raw. Not really any point in selling him as we don't really need to.

If there's anything actually in this story, it'll be the usual 250k offer or some other paltry bullshit sum that small English clubs have offered us for our promising youngsters.

Hearts can make money out of McGhee but I'm not sure now is the time to sell him. He's close to being a first team regular but he is not there yet and needs another year or so.

Every player is for sale if the price is right.

The way centre backs are under normal circumstances he is 4-5 years away from being his best physically and nearly 10 away from being at his peak mentally.

So its unlikely we will ever see the absolute best of him. He is still too small to get regular first team football. He said that himself. He is good at reading the game but gets caught out by balls in behind and struggles to cope with crosses into the box because he gets out muscled.

Big future ahead of him though as long as he does it right. I would say another 2-3 seasons with us and he could get a bigger move and net us more money.

In the corridors of power at Ricarton, a spokesman close to young ace Mcghee (19) said.

Part of a stunning double signing swoop with Clichy of Man City.

Think we will make decent money from McGhee. He needs to beef up a bit more and if he does (and becomes a first team regular) we could look to sell him.

Don't think we will let him go just now.

I have a theory on Jordan. He is not ready yet but as soon as he is, he will disappear South. Depending on how silly the bid is and what extra we can negotiate I would sell. Just got a nagging feeling we won't get close to seeing the best of him

If they offered ?1.5 million and some add-ons. Would be hard to turn down.

Maybe try and flog us Berra back. I would say thumbs down to that.

Aye right, Berra would be an amazing signing but he is their best defender.

Really?

Thought Berra was over rated and was carried by Pressley and then Zal. McGhee can become a better player than Berra if we hold onto him for a while longer.

Ive been to Portman Road a few times the last couple of seasons. Berra has been excellent everytime. Ipswich fans that I spoke to rate him very, very highly.

Have you seen him much lately?

Berra has made a good career out of limited ability. He was never asked to play full back as a teenager though and always had an experienced mentor. unfair to compare at this stage

McGhee is far more mobile than Berra and will become a better player IMO. Always thought Berra was so slow.

Wonder if the scouts will be up to see him if he plays on Thurs

You are in a better position than me to judge as I have only seen clips on TV when he looked to be caught square but maybe his game has improved with age. Wages would rule it out anyway I suppose.

Eh? His attributes were pace and aggression. He struggled with the ball at his feet though

I remember his first touch was not always the best but he was good at winning the ball back and climbed well in the air. His distribution was similar to Danny Wilson but he was still young at the time. A player that devides opinion.

Totally disagree - Berra was the keystone in our defence in his last few seasons with us.

As for McGhee he still has a long way to go before he matches Berra's ability never mind surpassing it IMO.

As I said he was a player who decided opinions, of the history of centre backs at the club I would rate him some where in the middle.

Got about as much chance of getting ?1.5m for McGhee as Hibs do for Scott Allan.

McGhee is the current U21 international Captain who has only just turned 19 and is under contract. He has played at every age group for Scotland and has 39 domestic appearances. If someone really wants him then we could command a decent fee.

Are Ipswich a bigger club than Hearts ?

If they are, Jordan's got to go and for whatever they feel like paying in instalments as well.  :whistling:

After all that's the new rules according to Scott Allan, his agent and some on JKB

They'll certainly pay much higher wages.

Why don't we send him out on loan to Ipswich where he will learn very quickly if gets game time.

I do not want him sold, he will make Hearts a lot of money when he gets sold to the EPL in a few years time.

Berra lost a bit of his pace when he had to bulk up to deal with the English leagues, IMO. Was never slow for us though.

It would be a terrible decidion to sell. It is all about potential. Of course we never know who will fullfill their potential but he has the atributes and Hearts have managed his development well. Best young defender at Tynecastle since CL. Not for Sale - at this time/price.

I've mentioned this on here before but Ipswich are my diddy "second team" (blame LMA Manager back in the day...) Berra is really highly rated down there and won their player of the season last year. Not a chance he'll be back at Hearts. Don't think McGhee is ready for a move yet but certainly has potential to get us good money in a couple of years. Needs regular game time first though.

They sold a similar age player Tyrone Mings who played only 57 games for them for ?8 million earlier this summer so there should be no shame in asking for ?2 million or more plus add ons.

Prices are on the up and up in England and if he was playing there no one would bat an eye lid at that kind of fee.

Mind you many of their fans are under the impression he is a right back not a central defender.

Indeed it would appear some of our fans are more Chris Robinson than Vlad.........................

Buffalo Bill

Berra had a couple of up and down seasons but bulked himself up into a big unit who was very good in the air, and became our skipper under Csaba.

We got good dollar for him and to be fair, he's done well for himself.

And yes, Ipswich are a fairly big club. I'm not sure if their fan-base is bigger but their crowds certainly are.

Positioning was good but as soon as a striker had half a yard on him always seemed slow on the turn to me, can never think of seeing him show any decent pace.

Other way around, Berra carried Pressley during that last horrific half a season when his legs and gone and he just dived all the time. Our defence improved markedly when it was Berra and big Zal. I'd take him back in a second but we aren't getting him and we couldn't afford him.

He's not though, he's a very good English championship defender, a massively overrated league.

It's a good idea but the model doesn't always work. Remember we rejected ?3 million for Andy Driver because we thought we'd get more by keeping him another year. Anything close to a million (which we won't get at the moment) and we'd sell, IMO.
